Following a crackdown on Akalis in the district in view of the Akali showdown scheduled for December 1 at Ropar, many senior Akali leaders of the city today went underground.

CM needs to depoliticise challan against Badals
Ludhiana, November 30
At long last the challan against Mr Parkash Singh Badal, former Chief Minister and President of the Shiromini Akali Dal and his family members has been presented in the court by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on charges of amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also given clearance for the establishment of two fast track courts for day-to-day proceedings of the case.

Opium licencees approach drug traffickers
Ludhiana, November 30
A decrease in the quantity of opium and delay in getting their fixed quota have forced several licensed drug addicts in this part of the region to approach drug traffickers. The Health authorities, however, maintain that after assessing the condition of the drug addicts, the officials had decreased their quota. They also said that easy availability of opium from other sources could be another reason for the decrease in the number of renewal of licences.

Councillor killed in road accident
Doraha, November 30
The local Municipal Councillor, Mr Sardara Singh, was killed in an accident when the Icon car in which he was travelling collided with an electric pole near Natraj theatre at Khanna, late last night.

 
CRIME

298 pirated CDs seized
Ludhiana, November 30
The police on Friday registered a couple of cases under Section 420 and various provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957, on a complaint of Mr Sunil Kumar of Durga Puri, Haibowal Kalan, who is field officer of a Delhi-based CD manufacturing company. The first case was registered against Sarabjit Singh, of Krishna Nagar and Paramjit Singh, of Gurdev Nagar.

Tempo driver arrested
Ludhiana, November 30
The Division No 3 police on Saturday arrested Ramesh, a resident of Jammu, and booked him under Sections 279, 304-A and 427 of the IPC and impounded his tempo. A case was registered against him on the statement of Mr Vinod Kumar, a resident of Mohalla Shiv Puri in Salem Tabri, who stated that the accused had hit his car and an unknown person as a result of which the man was killed.

Ludhiana, November 30
A seminar on the “Contribution of Vanjara Bedi to Punjabi Folklore” was organised by the Punjabi Sabhyachar Akademi at Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women here yesterday. Three eminent scholars — Dr Pritam Singh Kambo from the UK, Professor Brahm Jagdish Singh from Faridkot, and Dr Nahar Singh from Chandigarh — were special invitees. Dr Surjit Patar, the president of the Punjabi Sahitya Akademi, presided over the function.

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Public High School celebrated its annual prize distribution function today.
Mr Vijay Kumar Chopra of the Hind Samachar Group was the chief guest. Mr Suresh Chander lit the traditional lamp. Mr Harjit Singh Sidhu, project officer, Punjab School Education Board, was the special invitee. Some senior doctors of Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ms Kanta Sharma, founder of the school and Mr Rajan Sharma, coordinator, Punjab Open School, were also present on the occasion.

ABVP holds GK test for kids
Ludhiana, November 30
The local unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarathi Parishad (ABVP) today arranged a GK test for school students. The test was organised in two groups. Group A included students from class VI to IX and group B included students from class X to XII. As many as 1,700 students participated in the test.

Ludhiana, November 30
A fete was organised here today by Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar. The people had started gathering in the ground since 10 a.m. which was decorated with flags. Joy rides like merry go rounds, pendulum, giant wheels were the main attraction of the fete. Games like hitting the target, bursting of ballons, lighting maximum number of candles with one matchstick, fishing, treasure hunt tambola and housie also attracted a large number of persons.

HC sets aside PSERC decision
Ludhiana, November 30
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has set aside the decision of Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) and has directed it to decide the matter afresh within two months after getting the proper information from the Punjab State Electricity Board.

Bar poll fever grips lawyers

With three weeks to go for the annual election of local Bar Association, the biggest body of lawyers in North India, poll fever has started gripping the lawyers. While the official process for the elections is yet to start, several lawyers have already declared their candidature for the respective posts.
