Sanatorium projects hang fire
Jagmeet Ghuman

Kumarhatti, November 20
Even as the availability of funds galore, the dilly-dally approach of the authorities concerned has caused inordinate delay in various projects at tuberculosis sanatorium, Dharampur, near here.

An NRI, Mr Ravi Sood, has donated Rs 15 lakh to the sanatorium to set up a culture sensitivity lab, but till date there is little hope to set up the lab. It is important for the diagnosis of TB patients. At present patients have to incur huge expenses to get the facility from New Delhi and Chandigarh.

“The reported multi-drugs resistant TB cases are on the rise, thanks to the implementation of Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme at grass-roots level”, pointed a senior doctor of the sanatorium. There is an urgent need to set up the lab, he added.

In July two senior officials of the sanatorium visited a TB centre in New Delhi to get the information and knowledge about setting up of the lab. The recommendation to set up a state TB training, research and demonstration centre was made at a meeting of the Government Council of HP state TB Control Society on June 12, 2000, but till date the things have not proceeded from survey to survey. The sanatorium has even received Rs 18 lakh to construct the centre. The sanatorium has deposited nearly Rs 25 lakh in the past four year with the PWD to construct the residential complexes for doctors, but no work has carried out so far. Even a road leading to sanatorium is in pitiable condition.

Meanwhile, Mr V.D. Sharma, Medical Superintendent of the sanatorium, said the work to set up the lab and the training centre would start soon.
