for talks with Hindus, Muslims on Ayodhya
Chennai, October 19
The Centre today said it was making
efforts to hold talks between Hindu and Muslim leaders for an amicable
settlement to the vexed Ayodhya imbroglio and hoped that the issue would
be resolved within a year.
Army
officer, 6 militants killed in valley
Srinagar, October 19
Two militants and an Army officer
were killed in a gunbattle in the frontier district of Kupwara in Jammu
and Kashmir early today, defence sources said here. The encounter broke
out at K.K. Gali, 10 km north-west of Kupwara, in the wee hours when
militants opened fire on an Army patrol, they said.

The Pakistan Commissioner for Indus
Water, Mr Syed Jamaiat Ali Shah, today promised that the Government of
Pakistan would not violate the Indus water treaty, signed in 1960
between India and Pakistan, at any cost as mutual trust between both the
neighbouring countries would go a long way to exploit the six-river
basin, comprising Jhelum, Chenab, Sindh, Beas, Ravi and Sutlej for the
benefit of humanity.
