Labourer dies in building collapse
Zirakpur, October 18
A labourer was buried alive and four others injured when a newly constructed building in Gulmohar Colony (part II) at Dhakauli village, came crashing down near here last evening. The victims were working on the ground floor of the building when the incident occurred.

Car rally winner held amid high drama

The police today arrested three persons and seized a rifle along with cartridges from them following a five-hour drama that ensued at Chahr Majra village near here in the wee hours today.

Probe sought into hotel site allotment case
Chandigarh, October 18
To fix responsibility for a scam involving the loss of Rs 16 crore due to delay in the allotment of a hotel site in Sector 35, the Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has recommended a probe by the UT Vigilance Department.

Neighbourhood watch scheme in Sector 20
Chandigarh, October 18
The Chandigarh police launched its ambitious neighbourhood watch scheme aimed at providing security to persons living alone in their houses and to check thefts, in Sector 20 here this evening. The scheme was first launched on January 28, 2001 in Sector 38 (West) and was later expanded to several other sectors.

Military police turns 65
Chandigarh, October 18
The Western Command Provost Unit celebrated the 64th anniversary of the Corps of Military Police at Chandi Mandir Cantonment near here today. Addressing a special sainik sammelan, the Officer Commanding of the unit, Col A.R. Sinha, greeted all ranks and their families and lauded their dedication in the discharge of duties.

To meet the shortfall in the collection of income tax, sleuths of the Income Tax Department, North-West Region, are conducting an intensive survey at business establishments in the city. According to the information available, an accounted income of Rs 60 lakh has been surrendered by Regal Shoes in Sector 17.

Suspended Magistrate Bhardwaj moves application
Chandigarh, October 18
Suspended Judicial Magistrate S.S. Bhardwaj has moved an application to procure documents, including a letter written by the CBI seeking permission to take action against him. Acting on Bhardwaj's plea, the court has issued a notice to the CBI to file a reply in the case for November 5.

8-year-old girl succumbs to injuries
Chandigarh, October 18
An eight-year-old girl, Shafali Patwal, succumbed to her injuries at the PGI this morning. She had sustained head injuries after being hit by a car bearing a Haryana registration number in Sector 37 yesterday.

Shahbad resident crushed to death
Lalru, October 18
Vicky (23), a resident of Shahbad, was crushed to death by a rail engine on the Kalka-Ambala railway track near here today. An employee with Steel Strips India Limited, he was crossing the railway track when the accident took place at 3.30 pm.

91st session of Indian science cong on Jan 4

The 91st session of the Indian Science Congress Association will focus on the theme of “Science and Society in 21st Century—Quest for Excellence”. The congress is scheduled for January 4, 2004. Bar Council’s notice to Cabinet minister

The Punjab and Haryana Bar Council today issued a show cause notice to a Cabinet Minister, Punjab, Harnam Dass Johar, for not surrendering his advocate licence to it after becoming a minister in the Punjab Government, as required under the rule of the Bar Council.

‘Kikran de Phul’ released

The pain of Partition was re-lived once again at the book release function organised by the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi at Chandigarh Arts Council Auditorium in Sector 34 here today. The book “Kikran de Phul” which was released by Gen Himmat Singh Gill, Chairman of the akademi, marked the two-day celebrations organised by the Akademi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of City Beautiful.

Now, liver transplant for Rs 6 lakh
Chandigarh, October 18
The successful liver transplantation that eight-year-old Vivek underwent at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow almost a fortnight back has brought a ray of hope to many such children, who cannot afford to undergo the expensive surgery.
