Chautala govt harassing farmers: Bhajan Hisar, June 7 Mr Bhajan Lal, addressing a news conference here, said Mr Chautala who, when out of power, had been stressing upon farmers not to pay electricity bills as on coming to power he would supply power free of charge, had now backed out of his promise. Mr Bhajan Lal, taking strong exception to the “Bhvishya Pehchan Rally” organised by some of his detractors at Kaithal today, said neither he nor AICC general secretary Nawal Kishore Sharma had attended it. I received an invitation from Mr Jai Prakash (MLA), mentioning himself as the organiser of the rally. “Who appointed him the organiser?” he asked, adding: “Neither I nor Mr Naval Kishore Sharma are participating in this rally”. He declared: “Such meetings will be banned in future”. The firebrand lone RPI MLA and former
minister Karan Dalal was also present at the press conference. When asked whether he was joining the Congress, Mr Bhajan Lal quipped: The Congress will welcome such a bold and righteous leader if he opts to join us. The party will become stronger with him.” In reply to a question, he said if the Haryana Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), which was agitating over the continued arrest of its leader Ghasi Ram Nain, invited him to the Kandela (Jind) rally, he would definitely participate. The Chautala government, he said, was registering false cases of sedition against farmers, including Mr Nain. “It is Mr Chautala who always duped the farmers by inciting them in the first instance and then implicating them in sabotage cases,” he said. He said the party’s Kurukshetra meeting on June 9 would be followed by a block-level function at Sonepat on June 10 to implement the programme to
rejuvenate the Congress at the grassroots, as directed by the Congress President during a convention in March. He said after the present spell of heat, the Congress in Haryana would organise a “Jail Bharo Andolan” on the issue of SYL canal. Commenting on the outcome of Fatehabad byelection result last month, in which the Congress candidate lost by about 7,500 votes, Mr Bhajan Lal said: the result has shaken the Chautala government even though it retained the seat. “This is no win for a ruling party, which had won the seat in February 2000 elections by over 21,000 votes. “We have won even in our defeat, as the Congress vote bank has swelled by 15,000 more votes,” he asserted.

Heatwave hits cotton crop Fatehabad, June 7 A visit to Bigher, Salemkhera, Baropal and Dhanger in this villages district has revealed that seedlings of cotton crops sown in May had started burning due to the heatwave. The loss is more in the case of those farmers, who had sown American cotton last month. Those who had sown the ‘desi’ variety are luckier as it was sown in April and their crops have not suffered much loss. Agriculture experts have been suggesting slight tilling of land so that the little bit of moisture present in the land could save the seeds from burning. Mr P. S. Poonia, Circle Agriculture Officer (CAO), Fatehabad, has told this correspondent that the Agriculture Department has been organising camps for making farmers aware of the problem. The department has also been suggesting methods for the treatment of seeds against ‘sun burns’ and other problems. He said such camps had already been organised at Bhuna, Badopal and Rattia. He said the farmers who have yet not sown cotton are being advised to sow the H-1098 or H-777 varieties immediately. The farmers are also being advised to treat their seeds with amisan and stryptocycline to save their crop from being damaged. |
Villagers marry off poor girl Chormastpur (Ambala), June 7 The villagers of Chormastpur in Naggal area last week assisted in the marriage of a poor girl, Mamta. They did not spare any effort to ensure that things went off smoothly. Mamta’s father has been ill for quiet sometime. Marrying off Mamta with their meagre resources was not easy for the parents. It was then that the sarpanch of the village, Mr Surjit Singh, along with other villagers, came forward to help the family in the hour of need. Mr Surjit Singh told Chandigarh Tribune that the villagers decided to help in the marriage. “We decided that everybody should contribute for the marriage of Mamta, so that the family did not feel any strain,” he said. He said in future, too, the village would come forward for help in such cases. “We felt the poor should be helped. So we arranged for the marriage,” he stated. Having made up their mind, the villagers decided that the marriage of Mamta would be no different from that of any other girl. The villagers collected gifts to help her start her married life. Among other things, Mamta was given a silver set, gold tops, chain, nose pin, toe ring, bed sheets, 21 suits and 51 utensils. “It is evident from the number of suits that we went all out to ensure that Mamta’s marriage was no less than any other girl’s,” a villager said. It is not the first such case in the village. On an earlier occasion, a girl, Sukhwinder Kaur, was married off with the help of a section of villagers. In her marriage, too, the residents of a village lane had contributed for the marriage. The villagers are of the opinion that efforts must be made to help the poor and the downtrodden. They said, “While social organisations help in marriage of poor girls, it is perhaps for the first time in the area that the entire village has helped in the marriage of a poor girl.” |
