MUNICH DIARY
Anita Bose Pfaff calls on PM
T.R. Ramachandran

During Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s stay in Munich, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s daughter Anita Bose Pfaff and internationally acclaimed conductor Zubin Mehta called on him. Mrs Pfaff, who was with the Prime Minister for about 15 minutes, said she felt great to be known as the daughter of the legendary Subhas Chandra Bose who still had millions of admirers even six decades after his mysterious death. Like everyone else, she also felt extremely proud of her parents. Married to former German member of Parliament Martin Pfaff, she described her meeting with Mr Vajpayee as a courtesy call. She said she discussed with Mr Vajpayee relations between India and Germany. Mr Vajpayee said he found his meetings in Germany interesting and fruitful. Mrs Pfaff said she barely remembered her father as she was only three months old when he died in mysterious circumstances.

Mr Vajpayee said the Bavarian State of which Munich was the capital was as famous for its hospitality as it was for its industrial capability, its leadership in cutting edge technologies, the quality of its water and diversity of its beer. He described as remarkable Bavaria’s steady economic growth path despite the slowdown in the European economy.

He said the focus of the visit had been to strengthen bilateral political consultations and impart fresh momentum in areas of ongoing economic cooperation and explore new areas for collaboration. He also expressed India’s desire to develop institutional linkages with Bavaria. Just like Bavaria which is a pioneer in e-governance, Indian cities of Hyderabad, Bangalore and New Delhi were also developing useful e-governance systems.
