8 police officers transferred
Shimla, December 16
The Himachal government today transferred eight officers of the state police service. Mr Kulwant Rai, Additional Superintendent of police Shimla, has been posted as ASP, second India Reserve Battalion, Jungelberri. Mr Sanjeev Kumar, Subdivisional Police Officer, Nurpur and Mr Pritam Singh, Subdivisional Police Officer, Palampur, swap places.

PWD contractor arrested
Dharamsala, December 16

The Shapur police has arrested a PWD contractor and seized six sticks of gelatine, eight detonators and about eight metres of fuse wire from his possession. According to reports, the contractor was allegedly trying to sell these to a resident of Rait late last night when he was arrested.

Journalists seek apology from MLA
Bilaspur, December 16
The Himachal Pradesh State Journalists Federation has condemned the use of derogatory and abusive language against a senior journalist, Deshraj Verma, at Sarkaghat in Mandi district by Him Loktantrik Morcha convener Mohinder Singh Thakur, MLA from Dharampur constituency.

Dist BJP thanks Gujarat people

The district unit of the BJP today organised a meeting of its funcationaries at the local Bachat Bhavan. The party thanked the Gujarat people for giving overwhelming support to Mr Narendra Modi in thee elections there.

Dhundiara meeting illegal: Sharma

The president of the Banikhet BJP Mandal, Mr Amar Nath Sharma, has described the recent meeting of the BJP convened by a former legislator, Mr Gandharav Singh, at Dhundiara as “illegal”.

Five die as bus falls into gorge
Shimla, December 16
At least five persons were killed and 15 seriously injured when a bus fell into a gorge near Vyadhvir, 3 km from Mandi town, this evening, official sources said. The ill-fated bus (HP-03-1905), carrying more than 20 persons, was on its way from Sundernagar to Mandi.

Mr Pritam Chand, on return from UN Mission takes over as DSP, vigilance, Una and Mr Hari Chand, DSP, Vigilance, Solan, goes as DSP, CID, leave reserve Mandi. Mr Hira Singh, DSP, Third Battalion, Pandoh, goes as DSP, Vigilance, Solan.

PWD contractor arrested

Dharamsala, December 16
The Shapur police has arrested a PWD contractor and seized six sticks of gelatine, eight detonators and about eight metres of fuse wire from his possession. According to reports, the contractor was allegedly trying to sell these to a resident of Rait late last night when he was arrested.

Confirming this, the SP Kangra, Mr R.M. Sharma, said Mr Chain Singh, the PWD contractor, had been allotted road construction work at Harnera and he claimed that the blasting material had been issued to him by the department. Chain Singh was taken into custody and a case under Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act has been registered against him.

The police is trying to ascertain how the department allowed the material to be in the possession of the contractor when there are strict guidelines for its possession, use and storage.

In another incident, an early morning raid was conducted in Channi village and Thakurdwara on the border of Himachal and Punjab on Sunday by a team comprising of three Deputy SPs and 50 jawans, the police seized and destroyed about 200 quintals of lahan used for making illicit liquor.

At least 240 litres of illicit liquor was also seized. Mr R.M. Sharma, SP, said six cases under the Excise Act had been registered. Mr Sharma said at a joint meeting of police officials of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh held recently, it was decided to ensure that nakas were put up at night in all three states simultaneously to check anti-social elements.

Journalists seek apology from MLA

The Himachal Pradesh State Journalists Federation has condemned the use of derogatory and abusive language against a senior journalist, Deshraj Verma, at Sarkaghat in Mandi district by Him Loktantrik Morcha convener Mohinder Singh Thakur, MLA from Dharampur constituency.

Mr Thakur objected to a news item sent by Deshraj Verma and published in his newspaper today.

The federation president said journalists of the state wanted that Mr Thakur should apologise to Deshraj for the act.

The federation has urged the Chief Minister and the Director-General of Police to order a high-level probe into the incident and take action against Mr Thakur.

Dist BJP thanks Gujarat people

The district unit of the BJP today organised a meeting of its funcationaries at the local Bachat Bhavan.

The party thanked the Gujarat people for giving overwhelming support to Mr Narendra Modi in thee elections there.

Mr Baldev Sharma, district BJP chief, chaired the meeting. Mr Praveen Sharma, Himachal Pradesh Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports, attended the meeting.

The meeting was called to finalise programme for the “vishwas yatra” of the party.

In the meeting it was decided that BJP workers would take active part in the yatra and tell the people what the party government had done in the past and what their future plans were.

The party decided to fight the elections under the leadership of Prof Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Dhundiara meeting illegal: Sharma

The president of the Banikhet BJP Mandal, Mr Amar Nath Sharma, has described the recent meeting of the BJP convened by a former legislator, Mr Gandharav Singh, at Dhundiara as “illegal”.

Mr Sharma said party members who had been attending unofficial meetings of the BJP would be called for explanation and, if necessary, would be expelled from the party.

Mr Sharma said the information relating to this meeting had been given to the state BJP organising secretary, Mr Ram Swarup Sharma. He denied any factionalism in the party and asserted that the election would be contested unitedly by the BJP.

Five die as bus falls into gorge

Shimla, December 16
At least five persons were killed and 15 seriously injured when a bus fell into a gorge near Vyadhvir, 3 km from Mandi town, this evening, official sources said.

The ill-fated bus (HP-03-1905), carrying more than 20 persons, was on its way from Sundernagar to Mandi.

Two persons, including the driver-owner of the bus, died on the spot while three persons succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital.

Four seriously injured persons were referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, while the remaining injured persons admitted to a hospital at Mandi.

The district administration immediately swung into action on receiving the information and the injured were brought to the hospital.

The condition of some of the injured persons was critical, police sources said. PTI
