Another hoax call;
AI plane offloaded New Delhi, October 31 Following the call, all passengers on board were evacuated from flight AI 310 at an isolated bay at the airport. After a search by the bomb squad, it was revealed that there were no explosives on board and it was just another case of a hoax call. This is the second such incident in the past three days at the airport. On Tuesday, a British Airways flight made an emergency landing at the airport when an unclaimed bag was found on the plane. After a thorough search of the bag, only toothpaste and toothbrush were found. Today’s flight left Mumbai with 178 passengers, of whom 138 were New Delhi-bound. Fortyone international transit passengers were to be joined by 35 more at New Delhi for onward journey to Hong Kong. Hong Kong officials told Air- India here that two passengers — Paramjit Kaur and Pawan Kumar—were travelling on the flight with explosives which they planned to set off on reaching their destination. But the security officials claimed that there were no passengers on board with these names. |
‘Poor’ support system for children abused New Delhi, October 31 Advocating the setting up of an agency like the National Child Protection Authority in Sri Lanka, which reports directly to the President of the country, he said child protection services in India, and South Asia as a whole, needed to be improved. “Though extensive studies have been conducted on child sexual abuse, but I feel that in India it is neither high nor low, as it is a global issue, which needs to be handled sensitively,” he opined. He felt that during recent years, the situation had improved considerably as joint collaboration between international agencies like UNICEF, government sector, NGOs and social workers had shown positive results. “The process of revamping the juvenile justice system and the pioneering work done by some of the NGOs has helped in improving the plight of the sexually abused child,” he stated. He added that there was an urgent need for good training for child-care functionaries. Dr Danya Glaser, a senior researcher at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, in her lecture on emotional abuse and neglect, at the International Congress of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions, said in case of child sexual abuse the biggest hindrance was that the identity of the abuser was often hidden or disputed. She added that a sexually abused child faced problems like low self-esteem, distress, depression, anxiety and fright, with serious behavioural problems, impeding the child’s educational development. A majority of the studies highlighted the fact that the needs of families which had suffered the trauma of child sexual abuse were often not taken care of and understanding these was important. Psychiatrists say that there are adverse psychiatric consequences, like anxiety, depression, insecurity and aggression in sexually abused children. As part of a rehabilitation programme for sexually abused children in Sri Lanka, the victims were helped to regain and redirect their strengths through exposure to a number of components. These included interactive sessions with the group on biology of the human body, the meaning of sexual abuse and why it was wrong, how to face stigmatisation, thinking positively about life and parenting skills. The other strategy to deal with such children included counselling, informal education sessions, after which the children were sent back to rejoin their families. |
