Paswan courts arrest, seeks ban on VHP

New Delhi, October 27
Lok Janshakti Party President Ram Vilas Paswan today courted arrest along with thousands of party activists, demanding a ban on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and arrest of its leader Pravin Togadia under POTA.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Paswan flayed Mr Togadia for his “derogatory” remarks against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and denounced the VHP for making “disparaging” statements against the minorities in order to “create communal disharmony”. He also blamed the VHP for the killing of five Dalits in Jhajjar district of Haryana.

Mr Paswan was arrested along with some 10,000 party activists at Parliament Street when he was leading a protest march to the Prime Minister’s residence. However, they were released after some time. Among others who courted arrest were party Vice-President Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and MP Ram Chander Paswan.

Mr Paswan also deplored the “anti-dalit” policies of the Vajpayee government at the Centre and the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh. He also criticised Ms Mayawati for “not uttering a single word against the VHP, which is the real culprit in the Jhajjar killing.”

Speed restrictions on fast trains in Bihar
Our Correspondent

Patna, October 27
Frustrated by the continuous cases of averted mishaps owing to faulty tracks and in the light of the Rajdhani Express accident at Rafiganj, the Railways has imposed speed restrictions on fast trains in the three rail divisions that have their areas of operation in Bihar.

The decision that was affected from Saturday itself, also includes the order to run a pilot rail engine ahead of all Rajdhani Express trains running in and crossing through Bihar. The decision comes as part of the Railways efforts to boost rail safety and deal with incidents of sabotage in Bihar.

Sources said that the Railway Board had ordered to reduce the maximum speed of all Rajdhani Express trains, Shatabdi Express and other super fast trains to 75 km ph only in Bihar as against the normal peak speed of 130 km ph.

The rail divisions of Danapur, Asansol and Mughalsarai have their areas of operation in Bihar. These trains in all three divisions would follow the new speed guidelines. In the past one week, there have been reports of track damages and removal of fish plates in various parts of Bihar. Even yesterday tracks near the Rafiganj (where Rajdhani Express had met with an accident) were found cracked.

The sources said the Railway Board had also decided that a pilot engine would run ahead of all Rajdhani trains to pre-empt any sabotage move by extremists and anti-socials. They maintained that the Railways had tip-offs that extremists were targeting these super fast trains and that was why entire Bihar had been marked as “danger zone” for railway operations. The new speed regime has been made operational from Saturday.

Earlier, the Railway Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar had announced a project worth Rs 1,700 crore for rail safety involving circuiting of all rail sections to avert collisions and satellite tracking of trains, especially the Rajdhani Express.”

Prithvi’ on sale
Our Correspondent

Patna, October 27
A bomb scare of an altogether different nature has gripped the state capital and despite the best efforts of the administration, the sales chart of this “dangerous arsenal” has been going up.

Hydrogen bombs, sixers, bullet bombs, grenades and firecrackers named after India’s top missile ‘Prithvi’ are on sale and not clandestinely, with their prices are as low as Rs 35 for a piece.

As Divali approaches, the sale of these firecrackers has picked up and though the administrative machinery is conducting raids to nab those selling these, these seem to be available everywhere and are in great demand. Already, these are making the weak-hearted in colonies pray for their safety.

The administration, in the light of the Supreme Court ruling prohibiting manufacture and use of dangerous firecrackers, have conducted raids, but the black market continues.

The sellers defend their crackers as safe, blaming it on their improper use by people.

PUCL cites instances of persecution

Jaipur, October 27
The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) today alleged that right-wing Hindus were picking up a sodomy case in a mission school, to unleash a vicious ‘hate campaign’ against Christians in Ajmer district of Rajasthan.

In a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the PUCL also alleged that the government had failed to instil a sense of security and protect the religious freedom of minorities in the district.

Immediate intervention was needed to ensure that the issue did not become a communal problem, said the PUCL after its ‘fact-finding committee’ toured the area. “This is not an isolated incident but part of a chain of such incidents.”

According to the ‘report’, Christians were feeling insecure in the area adjoining Bhawanikheda where last month a priest was arrested on charges of sodomising schoolchildren.

The PUCL said Hindu organisations here had been using the ‘abused children’ as a tool to further their agenda, with the local media sensationalising the whole affair.

A school principal of Ajmer, who had gone to Bhawanikheda after hearing about the incident, was publically humiliated by these organisations, it added.

All missionary schools in Ajmer district had been branded as ‘Christian conversion centres’ and ‘centres of sexual exploitation’. Parents were being forced to withdraw children from the schools as the Christians terrorised and asked them to convert to Hinduism, the PUCL claimed.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia was present at one such conversion ceremony for 125 families at the Pisangan block late last month. Another conversion ceremony for 24 families was held at Bhawanikheda on October 7, according to reports.

In its letter the PUCL said, the NHRC should direct the state government to pay compensation to the ‘abused children’ and the school principal who was publically humiliated.

Prosecution proceedings be initiated against the right-wing Hindu leaders “for spreading disaffection among communities” and guilty policemen, who had failed to act impartially in the case, punished to prevent such incidents in future, it added. UNI

KP entities paid Rs 3,191 cr: JPG

New Delhi, October 27
Entities of Ketan Parekh, the prime accused in last year’s stock scam, paid Rs 3,191 crore over a period to three broker groups for share purchases and payment of margins, among other things, at the Calcutta Stock Exchange, the Joint Parliamentary Group inquiring into the scam said.

“The pay-in problem at the CSE revealed that large positions were built up by these brokers in few scrips and they had close linkages with Ketan Parekh”, the JPC looking into the stock scam and temporary freeze on the UTI’s flagship scheme US 64 said in its draft report to be finalised soon.

“Ketan Parekh entities had paid a sum of Rs 3,191 crore over a period to the Dinesh Singhania group, the Ashok Poddar group and the Sanjay Khemani group for purchase of share, payment of margins etc at the CSE”, the report said.

The SEBI, which undertook investigations in the wake of disturbing developments in the CSE, found huge pay-in liabilities from these groups.

While the net amount of outstanding due to the CSE on account of the pay-in liabilities from the Singhania group stood at Rs 34.43 crore, the liabilities from the Poddar and Biyani groups stood at Rs 26.84 crore and Rs 30.10 crore, the SEBI’s investigations revealed.

It said the CSE completed the payout of these settlements by meeting the shortfall on account of the pay-in default by these brokers out of the Settlement Guarantee Fund and other reserves of the exchange.

The CSE then declared all 10 entities of these three groups as defaulters and initiated recovery proceedings, including civil and criminal proceedings against them. PTI

Jail term educative: Salman

New Delhi, October 27
For Bollywood star Salman Khan, his 17-day jail life in a hit-and-run case was “educative” and helped him put things in perspective.

“Perhaps I needed to go inside... I had always lived a life of luxury, had never seen so much pain and discomfort. The stuff I saw inside helped me put things in perspective,” Salman told BBC World’s Asia Today programme to be aired tomorrow.

Claiming himself innocent and denying he was driving the car, Salman said he was destined to undergo such a crisis.

“Nobody could have stopped it. It was destined. I had to see it all. It was unfortunate my car which had never even been scratched before was involved in the accident”, he said.

“I was not driving, but it was my car... It was an accident, a mistake,” he said adding no one was ready to get his side of the story.

Salman said though he always used to pick up people from streets who met with accidents, it was unfortunate that he could not do so when his own car hit somebody.

“That was not because I ran away, I was there and did not want to leave but a mob gathered and started throwing stones. One hit my knee, one my thigh and another my head. I feel very sad when people say I ran away and my brother went to pick up the car stereo. It is completely untrue,” he said.

Salman’s car met with the accident on September 28, killing one person and injuring four others. A sessions court released him on conditional bail on Thursday after 17 days in custody.

Asked about his recent behaviour when he is reported to have forcibly taken actress Aishwarya Rai with him on the sets of a Shah Rukh Khan film, Salman said “Can anybody force anybody to do something they don’t want to do? So let that go.”

Asked whether his “obsessive” love for Aishwarya was not hurting him, he said “Not at all. It’s nothing like that.”

When further queried on wasn’t too much of emotion bad, Salman replied “...I am not too emotional. I laugh and cry like an ordinary man. May be I will change tomorrow, but then it will be only for the worse. I will become calculative and manipulative and be nice to people I hate.”

Asked whether he still loves Aishwarya, the star said, “I am not going to talk to you about this. It is only for me to know.” PTI

Madurai, October 27
Fourteen BJP volunteers were arrested by the police when they attempted to burn the effigy of DMK President M. Karunanidhi at Peraiyur in the district today, the police said.

A heated exchange of words between the BJP workers and the police took place when the former tried to burn the effigy. The police later arrested them.
