Kallis destroys Bangladesh

Potchefstroom (South Africa), October 27
South Africa completed their second successive innings victory when Bangladesh crashed to 107 all out on the third day of the second and final Test here today.

South Africa’s fast bowlers ripped through the fragile Bangladesh batting to secure victory by an innings and 160 runs with more than two days to spare.

Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini shot out the first three batsmen before man of the series Jacques Kallis took the last five wickets in the space of 12 balls, including a burst of three wickets in four balls to finish with five for 21.

Earlier Kallis was unbeaten on 139 when South African captain Shaun Pollock declared South Africa’s innings at 482 for five, a first innings lead of 267.

The touring team started their innings aggressively with Hannan Sarkar and Al Sahariar both going for their shots before Sarkar, who topscored with 65 in the first innings, was bowled by Ntini for 17 with the total on 33 in the eighth over.

Habibul Bashar followed in Ntini’s next over when he fended a lifting ball to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and Bangladesh were 46 for two at lunch.

They lost their remaining eight wickets between lunch and tea in an innings which lasted just 141 minutes and 30.3 overs.

Only Al Sahariar (27) and Alok Kapali (23) showed any resistance.

South Africa lost three wickets before declaring after an hour’s play today.

In contrast to the first two days, the sky was overcast and the floodlights were switched on within minutes of the start of play.

Gary Kirsten added only six runs to his overnight score before he was caught behind off Talha Jubair for 160 when he tried to run the ball down to third man.

England face another test

Perth, October 27
England’s shell-shocked batsmen face their toughest ordeal of the tour so far in the three-day match against Western Australia starting at the WACA Ground here tomorrow.

A line-up which has failed against second-string attacks in the tourists’ opening two games will need to display much more steel to succeed against the state side’s fiery pace trio of Brad Williams, Matt Nicholson and Jo Angel.

Williams and Nicholson are both contenders for Test honours, while the towering Angel — who has appeared in four Tests — has always revelled in the bouncy Perth conditions.

“We’ll give them the biggest test we can,” state captain Justin Langer said today.

Langer, an Australian Test opening batsman, is keen to keep the pressure on the Englishmen as they prepare for the opening Test of the Ashes campaign, starting in Brisbane, Queensland, next Thursday.

England are aiming to end a sequence of seven Ashes series defeats, but have begun their tour woefully, with a one-day loss to an Australian Cricket Board Chairman’s XI and a morale-sapping draw against Western Australia.

“Williams is a very exciting player,” Langer said. “He was easily the pick of the Australian A players in South Africa recently and then was called up for the Australian squad for the Tests against Pakistan, though he did not play.”

“I am also a huge fan of Nicholson. I believe he could be an outstanding all-rounder.

“And Angel just keeps coming. His record is second to nothing at the WACA.” The state’s pace attack will be completed by Stuart Karppinen, who snapped up five wickets when the South Africans toured a year ago. AFP

It is a measure of the state’s bowling strength that there is no room in the side for swing bowler Callum Thorp, the window cleaner from Wanneroo, just north of Perth, who destroyed the England batting three days ago.

His burst of four for 58 included the scalps of Robert Key, Mark Butcher and skipper Nasser Hussain.

Test players Adam Gilchrist and Damien Martyn have been rested from the Western Australian side.

Because of their crop of injuries, England have delayed naming their side.

The line-up seems almost certain to include all-rounder Craig White, who has joined the squad from Adelaide, South Australia, where he had been playing club cricket.

White was called up after all-rounder Andrew Flintoff flew to Adelaide for intensive treatment aimed at having him fit for the first Test. He is recovering from a hernia operation.

Opening batsman Marcus Trescothick was hopeful of being available for selection, despite being bothered by a right shoulder injury which especialy restricts him in the field.

Teams (from):

England: Nasser Hussain (capt), Marcus Trescothick, Mark Butcher, Robert Key, John Crawley, Alec Stewart, James Foster, Andy Caddick, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, Ashley Giles, Richard Dawson, Craig White (to be finalised).

Western Australia: Justin Langer (capt), Michael Hussey, Jo Angel, Ryan Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Brad Hogg, Stuart Karppinen, Scott Meuleman, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Chris Rogers, Brad Williams. AFP

Nehra likely to replace Zaheer
Subhrangshu Gupta

Kolkata, October 27
Ashish Nehra, the Delhi left-arm seamer is likely to get a berth in place of Zaheer Khan in the Indian team at the Eden Gardens Test against the West Indies, beginning from Wednesday.

Nehra may not be an “apt substitute” for Zaheer but captain Saurav Ganguly feels he will soon prove his worth and make his place secure in the team if he sustains his performance in the future.

Gaugnly is happy about Nehra’s performances and so is coach John Wright. He wants Nehra to share the new ball with Javagal Srinath against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens as an injured Zaheer is being rested for the Test.

In the preceding two Test matches in Mumbai and Chennai, Srinath had Zaheer as his partner, who has now been stuck down with a shin bone injury.

Though Zaheer has been recuperating speedily, he may not be “absolutely fit” even for the forthcoming one-day series involving seven matches from November 6 to 24.

In that case, if Nehra performs “very well” in the Eden Gardens Test, he might have his place in the team in the ODIs also (at least in four or five matches), says coach Wright. But if Nehra fails “miserably”, there are fair chances for either Agarkar or Sanjay Bangar as his replacement in the ODIs, says former Bengal captain Sambaran Banerjee.

The one-day series will begin at Jamshedpur on November 6 and end at Vijayawada on November 24.

Our Sports Reporter

Rohtak, October 27
A five-wicket haul by left arm leg spinner Aparajit Singh and unbeaten 71 by skipper Manvinder Bisla put Haryana in comfortable position against Himachal Pradesh on the opening day of the Cooch Behar Cricket match at Maharaja Aggarsain stadium here today.

Playing their last match in the North Zone league, Haryana bowlers dismissed their opponents, who had opted to bat first after winnings the toss, for a paltry 107 in their first innings. None of the Himachal Pradesh batsmen were comfortable against Haryana bowlers, especially Aparajit Singh, who returned with an impressive bowling analysis of 19-12-16-5. Medium pacer Sachin Rana bagged three wickets. Barun Sharma and Puneet Dhatwalia scored 25 and 23 runs, respectively. The Himachal innings folded 45 minutes after the lunch interval.

Haryana also made a disastrous start losing their first two wickets when team’s total was eight. However, they found a competent pair in Manvinder Bisla and Vikram Dhariwal. The duo added 89 runs in 62 minutes of batting after facing 97 balls to enable Haryana gain a first innings lead. In the process Bisla, who has represented India in the junior World Cup held in South Africa and the series against England abroad, completed his half century with the help of 7 boundaries.

Mens tour bandwagon nears end

Paris, October 27
Sebastien Grosjean defends his Paris Masters title next week as the men’s tour bandwagon reaches the last stop before Shanghai.

The draw at the $ 2,328,000 event has a Grand Slam look, and with six spots in the prestigious Masters Cup still up for grabs, the stakes could not be higher.

This year’s event in Bercy will be full of the kind of intrigue the ATP aimed to produce when it launched the Champions Race in an attempt to make men’s tennis more interesting.

Gone are the days when players wound down their seasons at low key indoor events in some of Europe’s favourite cafe destinations.

The mechanics of the race mean that at least 10 players arrive in Paris with a shot at qualifying for the Shanghai showdown, while the battle for the top spot is a duel between Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi, who are seeded to meet in next Sunday’s final.

An early exit for either in the Palais Omnisports in Bercy could prove decisive, although the likelihood is that only in Shanghai will Hewitt know if he has ended top of the pile for the second year running.

While Agassi and Hewitt booked their places in China weeks ago, the remaining places will be decided next week.

Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero and Russia’s Marat Safin are both virtually assured of their spots.

The bludgeoning groundstrokes of Safin, Paris champion in 2000, appear ideally suited to the Bercy surface and the third seed will be a strong contender for the title.

Both Ferrero and Safin have tricky draws, however.

The Spaniard could meet one of the game’s emerging talents in the second round, Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan, while Safin faces a potential second-round clash with surprise Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian of Argentina.

Britain’s Tim Henman will need a strong showing in Paris to cement his place and will not relish facing fit-again Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten in the second round, should the 2000 race winner come through his opener against a qualifier.

Henman, who said at the start of the year that qualifying for the Masters Cup was his target, has been inside the top seven virtually all season but has come under pressure recently from the likes of Carlos Moya, Roger Federer and Jiri Novak.

Now would be an ideal time for Henman to break his Masters Series duck, although he has rarely shone in Paris and suffered first round defeats in the past two years.

Germany’s Tommy Haas and Andy Roddick are also in contention for a place in the Masters Cup, although the young American will have bad memories of his last visit to Paris in September when he lost both rubbers in the Davis Cup semifinal against France.

Friday’s quarterfinal defeat in Basel by Federer has left the 20-year-old probably needing to reach the final in Bercy.

While no French players are in contention for the Masters Cup, home interest will be high, particularly with the Davis Cup final against Russia being held at the same venue next month.

Defending champion Grosjean is seeded seven but could face compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round.

Mathieu will arrive in Paris with high hopes after superb indoor season that brought him back-to-back wins in Moscow and Lyon.

Shotmaker Fabrice Santoro will also be a French threat, particularly after his return to form in Madrid where he reached the semifinals.

A final sub-plot will be the tussle between Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson and French Open winner Albert Costa.

With the eighth Masters Cup place going to the highest ranked winner of a Grand Slam tournament not already in the top seven, Costa is in the driving seat. But the Spaniard’s dislike of fast, indoor surfaces does not bode well for a long stay in Paris.

Johansson, on the other hand, has been troubled by injury and, perhaps more significantly, is in Agassi’s quarter of the draw. Reuters

Kerala stun Bengal, Maharashtra win

Imphal, October 27
Reigning champions Kerala began their Santosh Trophy campaign with 3-2 win over Bengal in group A at Khuman Lampak Stadium here today.

Bengal, 29 times winners, went ahead with a superb Chandan Das goal in the 20th minute but S Ignatious, striker of Kerala levelled the score 11 minutes later.

After the breather Ignatious made it 2-1 for Kerala in 59 minutes of play. Before the second goal, Kerala coach M Pegthomban brought striker T Usman from the bench in place of Abdul Hakim.

But Bengal’s substitute Sandip Das restored parity from a Chandan Das pass.

Usman, declared ‘man of the match’, netted the winner in the 87th minute from a cross by Ignatious. Usman following a run of Ignatious beating Dastidar 3-1, with a header.

Kerala will play their last quarterfinal against Assam in the group on Tuesday.

Play began on a subdued note and the rivals took time to judge the strength and the weaknesses of the opposition.

Kerala took charge first to force a half chance in the 15th minute through a header, but striker Asif Saheer failed to utilise the move and beat Rajat Ghosh Dastidar. Dastidar without much hassle grabbed it.

Five minutes later, Bengal took the lead from a right footer volley of medio Chandas Das. The ball hit the upper post, dropped inside and later came out. But linesman Gokhulananda Sharma of Manipur signalled for goal and referee Riazawul Haque blew the whistle. K Ajayan of Kerala made a futile protest.

Five minutes later, another salvo from Das hit the post after Kerala’s goalie Purushothaman was beaten in the air.

S Ignatious levelled the score from a header in the 31st minute from an Abdul Hakim floater and India-international custodian Ghosh Dastidar had no answer.

Striker Ignatious jumped over Debjit Ghosh and nodded home.

Kerala had also made a goal-bound move which Suresh Babu’s right footer Dastidar repulsed.

Naushad Mousa of Maharashtra had a heady day today with the team’s 1-0 win over the Railways keeping their hopes alive in group B. Maharashtra drew 1-1 in their first quarter final league match against Services. It now awaits the outcome of the Services and Railways match in the group on Tuesday.

Defender Mousa, who was adjudged the most valuable player of the day, headed home through a corner from midfielder Mahato in the 37th minute. He came out from his post to help his striker as Mohato took a corner kick and came tall defeating Railway custodian Sangram Mukherjee.

Before this, Maharashtra goalee Rajat Guha had a brilliant save from a shot of Bappan Sarkar five minutes into the play. Guha made three brilliant saves. Stephen Dias was the main schemer for Maharashtra.

Desperate to change the scoring line, Railways adopted force but referee Benjamin De Silva from Goa cautioned Dipankar Ray of the Railways and India international right back Satish Bharati.

Bharati was shown the red card for his second offence after flooring Stephen Dias at the fag end. After the second half, Atul Hamid of Maharashtra who also made some good moves and substitute Ajit Quereshi came in place of Mahato, who made two openings.

Last year’s semifinalist Railways had a rosy chance but Subhashis Chakraborty could not make it though Maharashtra’s goal was at his mercy. UNI

New Delhi, October 27
India suffered a humiliating 0-7 defeat at the hands of South Korea in the quarterfinal of the AFC Under-20 football championship in Doha.
