Our Correspondent

Jalandhar, July 27
A college student was stabbed to death while another was seriously injured in broad daylight by some college students carrying swords and knives about 100 yards from the Model Town police station here today.

The deceased, Amit Sharma (18) of the Model House locality along with his friend Gurwinder Singh (18) of the Basti Bawa Khel locality went to a cyber cafe in the Model Town locality in the afternoon, where they entered into a brawl with a student of Lyallpur Khalsa College over some issue. The matter was, however, resolved with the intervention of some shopkeepers.

But after about 15 minutes, the student of Lyallpur Khalsa College and his five accomplices carrying swords and knives reached the cyber cafe and attacked Gurwinder inflicting serious injuries on his face. Though Amit Sharma tried to escape from the spot, but the attackers cornered the former and started bashing him up. One of them stabbed him with a knife near his heart.

The police failed to reach the spot, even as the police station was situated just 100 yards from the cyber cafe. The residents and the shopkeepers were so panicked that nobody dared to come forward to help the injured students, lying in a pool of blood, for about half an hour.

It were some passersby, who got admitted both victims to the local Civil Hospital. Amit was later shifted to the local Tagore Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Gurwinder Singh, talking to this correspondent at the hospital, said Amit and his family had recently settled in Mumbai and he had come to the city five days ago to collect mark sheet of 10+2 from the college.

When contacted, the Principal of the college, Mr H.S.Chatha, admitted that some of the college students were involved in the murder, but he refused to reveal their identity. Mr Rajiv Ahir, SP, however, maintained that the police had received some vital clues about the identity of the murderers and raids were being conducted.
