Admn demolishes Tangri’s illegal shops

In a swift move that took everyone by surprise, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation got into action and demolished some illegal structures, allegedly belonging to Shiv Sena (Rashtrawadi) president Jagdish Tangri in the Gur Mandi here.

Forces deployed to prevent outbreak
Ludhiana, July 27
In view of the rains, the Municipal Corporation has chalked out an extensive programme for mass awareness on prevention of diseases. Mr S.K. Sharma, Municipal Commissioner, said awareness camps would be held in each zone of the city next week.

Police remand for five DMCH nurses

The Judicial Magistrate, Ms Anita Narwal, today remanded five nurses of DMCH in police custody for one day, in a case registered against them under Section 397 of IPC at police station Division No 8 on July 14.

“Punjab should invest in power projects in Uttaranchal since this state has limited potential for setting up more hydel projects,” said Uttaranchal Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr Soorveer Singh Sajwan. He was on a personal visit in the city yesterday.

The Industry and Trade Forum, Punjab, and the Ludhiana Small Scale Manufacturers Association have criticised the working of the Punjab State Electricity Board, especially when it comes to ensuring regular power supply to the industry.

Printers resent entry tax on paper
Ludhiana, July 27
Resentment prevails among the printers in the state over the proposed introduction of a four per cent entry tax on paper. According to local printers, the most serious fallout of the proposal is likely to fall on the middle and lower middle class, especially the student community.

Principals meet minister
Ludhiana, July 27
A deputation of the representatives of an association of the affiliated schools of the Punjab School Education Board led by Mr Rajinder Sharma, president, met the Education Minister, Mr Khushal Behl, yesterday at Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town, to apprise him of various problem faced by the principals.

Charge of power theft quashed, refund ordered
Ludhiana, July 27
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has quashed the charge of power theft against a local industrialist and has further directed the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to refund the amount of Rs 22,477 to the complainant within one month along with interest at the rate of 12 per cent from the date of deposit.

One gets life term  for murder
Ludhiana, July 27
Mr V.B. Handa, Sessions Judge, Ludhiana convicted Ranjit Singh, alias Chhotu (39) of Chakkar village, Jagraon, on the charge of killing Chamkaur Singh of same village and sentenced him to undergo rigorous life imprisonment, besides imposing a fine of Rs 2000.

Red Cross gets sublet shop razed
Ludhiana, July 27
The district administration demolished a shop near the Red Cross Bhavan on Mall Road here today. The kiosk had been allotted to a woman as compensation some 12 years ago and she had allegedly sublet it. The demolition squad came with bulldozers and a strong police force.

Khanna MC passes all resolutions
Khanna, July 27
A meeting of the local municipal council was held under the presidentship of the acting president Mr Nirmal Singh Jassal, at Municipal Town Hall here yesterday. All resolutions were passed unanimously. Six members of the Congress and one supported by the Congress boycotted the meeting.
