Abhinav Bindra, Ambekar give India first gold

Manchester, July 27
The highly talented Abhinav Bindra and Sameer Ambekar provided India with the first gold medal in the 17th Commonwealth Games with a record breaking performance in the men’s 10 m rifle pairs event in shooting at the National Shooting Centre in Bisley today.

The Indian duo aggregated a record 1184 points to not only re-write the Commonwealth Games record but also open the medal account for the largest ever Indian contingent which had mixed fortunes yesterday. Abhinav and Ambekar scored 594 and 590, respectively, taking the team score to an all time high of 1184.

The experienced Jaspal Rana and partner Samresh Jung brought more cheer to the country by picking up the silver medal in the men’s 10 m air pistol event.

Two other Indians in the fray today — Manavjit Singh and Anwer Sultan — did not make much of impact as they finished fifth in the men’s trap pairs with a total of 184 points. PTI
