Chautala stresses need for diversification of crops

Jind, April 8
Addressing various public meetings in a number of villages in Narwana subdivision in the district yesterday, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Haryana Chief Minister, emphasised the need for diversification for crops.

He said our godowns were already filled with wheat and rice and there was a shortage of space for storing coming wheat crop. He said if farmers continued growing wheat and paddy crops it would not be possible for the government agencies to purchase these crops in the next two to three years.

He asked farmers to grow vegetables, fruits, oil seeds and pulses instead of wheat and paddy. He said there was a shortage of oil seeds and pulses in the country and there was great need to sow these crops to meet the requirements of oil seeds and pulses.

On the demand of villagers for a new sugar mill in the Narwana area, Mr Chautala said at present sugar worth Rs 450 crore was available with the sugar mills of the state and the stock of sugar would increase further with the setting up of two more sugar mills in the state during this year.

He asked farmers to bring their sugarcane crop to the sugar mills in the state during the current crushing season as the mills would purchase their crop.

Highlighting the achievements of his government, Mr Chautala said to solve the problems of people at their door step “sarkar apke dwar” programme was launched. He said leaders of opposition parties had criticised the programme and propagated that the programme would not succeed.

He claimed that despite the propaganda by opposition parties, the programme proved very successful and a large number of problems of people were solved under this programme.

He said his government wanted to bring villages on a par with cities in the matter of development so as to prevent villagers from migrating to cities. On the demand of people, Mr Chautala announced various development works in different villages in Narwana subdivision.

Mr Chautala unveiled the statue of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal at Khatkar village. While addressing the gathering on this occasion, Mr Chautala said Devi Lal throughout his life worked for the welfare of farmers and the poor.

He said his government had decided to install statues and photos of martyrs and national leaders in educational institutions so that the students got inspiration from them.

The residents of Khatkar village presented garlands of currency notes to the Chief Minister which he returned to them for setting up of Chaudhary Devi Lal Trust in the village.

Earlier, presiding over the meeting of the district grievances redressal committee at Jind, Mr Chautala ordered the suspension of two patwaris of the district and also ordered the registration of cases against them for various irregularities.

Fudging of power figures contained
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 8
The Haryana Power Utilities’ attempt to check the practice by a section of its staff of fudging energy consumption by unmetered agricultural consumers is stated to have been yielding results. Official sources here claimed that in an unprecedented occurence, power consumption by unmetered tubewells had recorded a negative trend in the last financial year (April, 2000 — March, 2001).

Quoting figures, state government officials said that the prevailing trend was that consumption by unmetered tubewells would always show an increase. In fact, consumption by agricultural tubewells was also shown to have increased in the first two years of the Om Prakash Chautala-led government . However, last year the consumption recorded a negative trend of 5 per cent.

In the absence of any mechanism to keep a tab on the consumption of energy by unmetered tubewells, it has been a practice with staff members to fudge the figure of consumption to cover up the misutilisation of electricity, including pilferage.

Meanwhile, sources here also clarified that the decrease in power consumption by unmetered tubewells should not be taken as an indication of reduced supply of power to the agricultural sector. This sector was being supplied power for seven hours to nine hours every day, they claimed.

According to officials, while consumption by unmetered tubewell owners — who pay the tariff at a flat rate — had shown a decrease, consumption by LT and HT industries had increased in the past two years. Consumption by the HT industry increased by 21 per cent and the LT industry by 10.52 per cent in 2000-2001, the sources said, adding that as a result of the increase in consumption by the industrial sector, the power utilities could amass more revenue.

On the issue of the installation of meters at unmetered tubewells, they said that out of an estimated 3.5 lakh such connections in Haryana, so far only 10 per cent could be fitted with meters. The meters are being installed apparently to enable the utilities to compute the correct distribution losses. It has been clarified that the farmers will continue to be charged tariff under the existing flat-rate system.

All set for ‘Chaitra Chaudas’ fair
Our Correspondent

Kurukshetra, April 8
All necessary arrangements have been made by the district administration so as to facilitate the visiting lakhs of devotees for the annual “Chaitra Chaudas” fair to be held from April 10 to 12 at Pehowa, 27 km from here.

While elaborating on the importance and significance of the fair, Mr Gurmeet Singh Panjeta, Mela Administrator and SDM, Pehowa, said the fair symbolised a unique example of the Hindu-Sikh unity. He said about five lakh pilgrims were expected to have a holy dip on the occasion in the sacred Saraswati tank.

He said 80 per cent pilgrims belonged to Sikh community hailing from Sangrur, Patiala, Ropar, Bathinda, Faridkot and Ferozepore districts of Punjab which was known as the Malwa region of Punjab.

Mr Panjeta said according to Hindu mythology, it was Prithudak Teeratha where Lord Brahma prayed before the creation of the universe. He said sages and saints, including Vashishtha, and Vishwamitra, prayed here for years on the banks of the river Saraswati. The name Prithudak was derived from King Prithudak whose son Vain was cured of leprosy after a dip in the sacred waters of the Saraswati, he added.

While highlighting the historical aspects of the mela, he said it was here that on the advice of Lord Krishna, Yudhisthra — the Kuru King — had prayed and offered “pinds” in the memory of his ancestors, near and dear ones, who were killed in the battle of Mahabharata.

He said it was believed that if “pinds” would be offered here the departed souls would get salvation and would rest in peace. It was the main reason that thousands of Sikhs could be seen offering “pinds” in the memory of their ancestors during the three-day fair. He said even Sikh Gurus, like Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Gobind Singh, visited the “teeratha” on a number of occasions and delivered sermons.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Indora said due to unabated female foeticide, the male-female ratio had been badly disturbed in our society and if it is not checked now, it can cause a lot of damage in the years to come. Three women held for murder
Our Correspondent

Kurukshetra, April 8
The district police claims to have arrested three women for allegedly murdering Sunil Rawat (20) of the local engineering college by throwing acid on his face yesterday.

The three accused have been identified as Ranjeet Kaur alias Laadi, Indra alias Indu and Rajni, residents of Ambala Cantonment.

Stating this here today, the district police chief, Mr Desraj Singh, said during interrogation, they told the police that they had been employed as labourers with the deceased’s brother-in-law Vivek, who manufactured sweet boxes, but had been shunted out from the factory. Since their dismissal, they had started thinking of taking revenge from Vivek or his family.

Meanwhile, Vivek was married to the deceased’s sister and they kept visiting Vivek’s family now and then. However, the women had taken the marriage album with them. They had taken out a few photographs of Vivek with his wife from the album and had started sending anonymous letters to blackmail him.

The district police chief further said when the women reached here in a Maruti Van (HR-0K-5910) at the Regional Engineering College yesterday, they persuaded Sunil to discuss the album issue with them.

They sped away with Sunil in the vehicle. They beat up Sunil, threw acid on his face, pushed him out of the van on the Kurukshetra-Pehowa road and fled.

Mr Desraj Singh further said the case had been registered under Section 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code on the complaint of Sunil’s brother Sanjay Rawat. Sensing something wrong, he and his neighbour Kanti Lal followed the van on the latter’s motor cycle.

Sunil was rushed to the nearby LNJP Hospital, where he succumbed to his acid burns.

Efforts to recover the van used in the crime as well as to arrest its driver were on.
