A Sarva Dharma Prarthna Sabha was organised in the local Mukand Lal National College here today on the first death anniversary of Chaudhary Devi Lal. A large number of people from different walks of life and INLD workers participated and paid tributes to him. 

Life term for raping sister-in-law
Kaithal, April 6
A resident of Matour village of this district has been sentenced of life by the Additional District Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Bansal, here for raping the wife of his younger brother and subsequently burning her to death.

Hearing adjourned in bail plea case
Ambala, April 6
The bail application of Neena Gupta, an accused in refund vouchers scam of Rs 2.26 crore of the Ambala Excise and Taxation Department, was adjourned for April 9 here today.

Plan to promote police-people ties
Chandigarh, April 6
The Haryana police will launch a year-long special campaign on May 1 to strengthen police-public relations, Mr M.S. Malik, DGP, said here today. The objective of the campaign was to enhance cooperation between the police and the public.

Tributes paid to Devi Lal

A Sarva Dharma Prarthna Sabha was organised in the local Mukand Lal National College here today on the first death anniversary of Chaudhary Devi Lal. A large number of people from different walks of life and INLD workers participated and paid tributes to him. Hymns from Hindu and Sikh scriptures were recited and prayers held by Pir Husain Ahmed and Father of local Church on the occasion. The sabha was organised between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. After this a blood donation camp was also organised by the District Administration.

On behalf of the District Administration Mr Rajeev Sharma, Deputy Commissioner said that Chaudhary Devi Lal went to jail at the tender age of 15 for the freedom of the country and gave new definition to politics by serving the common people. He continued to serve the poor, like farmers, labourers, ruralists throughout his life. He started several welfare schemes like sanman pension for citizens, matching grants scheme, Monetary help for destitute on the occasion of daughter’s marriage, food for work scheme etc. Mr Balwant Singh, District INLD President described Chaudhary Devi Lal as great personality who spurned even the post of Prime Minister of India in favour of Mr V.P. Singh.

Dr M.C. Gambhir, MLA said Chaudhary Devi Lal was the creator of Haryana State. Jagadhri MLA and Senior BSP leader Dr Bishan Lal Saini said that Mr Devi Lal was secular to the core of his heart and he gave equal attention to the welfare of people of all castes, creeds and faiths of India. He gave the slogan: “Lok Raj Lok Laj Se Chalta Hai”.

Dr K.L. Johar, former Vice-Chancellor of the GJU said that Mr Devi Lal like Mahatama Gandhi and Jai Parkash Narayan was a great sacrificer and renounced his claim to the post of Prime Minister of India.

Life term for raping sister-in-law

Kaithal, April 6
A resident of Matour village of this district has been sentenced of life by the Additional District Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Bansal, here for raping the wife of his younger brother and subsequently burning her to death.

Superintendent of Police A.S. Chawla said that Mukesh Kumari wife of Sajeet Kumar (20) was alone in her house in the village on March 4, 2000 when her husband’s elder brother Hoshiara raped her and later burnt her body by sprinkling kerosene on it.

The victim received 100 per cent burns and succumbed to her injuries in the civil hospital Kaithal. Following this a case under Sections 376/302 of the IPC was registered against the accused at Kalayat police station and police put up the challan in the court on May 20, 2000. The accused was chargesheeted by the court on October 12 the same year.

After hearing arguments the prosecution and the defence the judge held the accused guilty and sentenced him to 10 year’s rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 2000 after convicting him under Section 376 of the IPC for rape and awarded him life imprisonment and fined him Rs 2000 after convicting him under section 302 IPC for murder.

Hearing adjourned in bail plea case

Ambala, April 6
The bail application of Neena Gupta, an accused in refund vouchers scam of Rs 2.26 crore of the Ambala Excise and Taxation Department, was adjourned for April 9 here today. The judge also ordered to verify the medical records of Neena submitted in the court. On April 4, a bail application was filed in the court of Additional Sessions Judge B.B. Prasoon, through her counsel Devander Bansal, Neena did not appear personally in the court as she has been admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh, for the past few days.

During the argument on the bail application today, the counsel of Neena submitted that the police had falsely implicated the accused in the case. She was not involved in preparing false vouchers, the counsel added.

The public prosecutor, while opposing the bail application, requested the court that since it was a big financial fraud and a huge amount of money was transacted in her account in the scam, therefore, she should not be granted bail.

The counsel of Neena stated in the bail application that she had three minor children and her daughter Deepa was a chronic patient of asthma and these days she had been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment. Moreover, there was no adult male or female member in the family to attend to Deepa, the counsel added.

It was also stated that the applicant was also seriously ill. She was suffering from heart trouble, hypertension, infection in lungs and other diseases and was at present at the PGI, Chandigarh, for treatment. The application further stated that she was in judicial custody for the past more than a month and was no more required by the police for further investigation. After hearing the argument of both sides, the judge adjourned the case for April 9.

Kidnapping case: Two of the accused, Darshan Singh and Kuldeep Kumar alias Kala, allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a local lawyer were handed over to the Punjab police here today. Earlier, the Ambala police had taken their custody for interrogation.

Plan to promote police-people ties

Chandigarh, April 6
The Haryana police will launch a year-long special campaign on May 1 to strengthen police-public relations, Mr M.S. Malik, DGP, said here today. The objective of the campaign was to enhance cooperation between the police and the public.

Mr Malik said the district police would adopt one crime-prone village in each subdivision. The range IGPs had been directed to send a list of selected villages to the police headquarters by April 15. The district-level crime again women cell (CAWC) and the subdivisional-level police officials would also be actively involved in the campaign.

During the campaign, sports such as boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, kabaddi, athletics and swimming would be promoted.

Stepfather booked for rape

Ambala, April 6
The Ambala Cantt police has registered a case of rape against stepfather who allegedly raped one of his minor daughters here today. The accused fled after committing the crime. On the complaint of the victim, the police registered a case under Sections 376 and 506, IPC, against Bhim Sain alias Kaka.
