Cong, Left oppose excise ordinance
New Delhi, January 9
The Congress and the Left parties today opposed the government’s decision to enhance additional excise duty through an ordinance saying such a move would not only be in violation of parliamentary norms but also put a heavy burden on the people. Senior Congress leaders and former Finance Ministers Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee, the Politburo of the CPI (M) and the Central Secretariat of the CPI expressed concern over the widening fiscal deficit.
