Focus on Kumble’s leadership Bangalore, January 9 The absence of Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Javagal Srinath has taken some sheen off the tournament, which will feature India Seniors, India A and India B in a round-robin format with the top teams facing off in the final on Sunday. But the imminent selection of the team for the one-dayers against England is expected to raise competitive flair among the fringe players in the limited overs day-night tournament, with matches starting daily at 2.30 pm. Dravid has also pulled out of the one-dayers against England to undergo treatment for his shoulder discomfort, while Tendulkar has been given a break and Srinath is on the rest-list. Selection committee chairman Chandu Borde’s words after the Test series that Kumble’s leadership would be watched in the tournament have focussed attention on the spin wizard, who is on a high after becoming the first Indian spinner to break into the 300 club. Saurav Ganguly is leading India Seniors but it is doubtful whether he will play all the matches. V.V.S. Laxman will pilot India A in the absence of Dravid, while Kumble will be at the helm of affairs for India B. Ganguly, who had a lean patch as a batsman in the recent Test series against England, would be looking to regain form. Meanwhile, India Seniors team would have only 12 players. As the selectors have decided against picking a replacement for Laxman who will lead the ‘A’ team. The teams: India A: V.V.S. Laxman (capt), Connor Williams, Daniel Manohar, Rohan Gavaskar, Sangram Singh, Yuveraj Singh, Ajay Rathra (wicket-keeper), Reetinder Sodhi, Murali Karthik, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Sarandeep Singh and Sitanshu Kotak. India B: Anil Kumble (capt), Mohammed Kaif, S. Sriram, Dinesh Mongia, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Arjun Yadav, Z. Zufari, Vijay Bharadwaj, Pankaj Dharmani (wicket-keeper), Ashish Nehra, S. Pandey, Amit Bhandari and Devendra Bundela. The schedule: January 11: India Seniors vs India B |
Indian 1-day team on Jan 13 Mumbai, January 9 The selectors will watch the final before picking the side for the one-day series, BCCI sources said here today. The six-match series gets underway with a tie at Kolkata on January 19.

Mithali leads India to triumph Hyderabad, January 9 Recovering from an early collapse, after being put into bat, Indian eves built up the innings through Mithali Raj (39) later declared woman-of-the-match, Mamta Maben (55 not out) and Arundathi Kirkire (35) to coast to 191 for five in 50 overs. England fumbled in their chase with only opener Coroline Atkins (20), Arran Thompson (21) and skipper Clare Connor (15) scoring in double figures. India not to host ICC knockout tourney New Delhi, January 9 “We have not received the exemption so far and it does not look like we are going to get it. As time is running out, for the tournament scheduled to be held in September, we have withdrawn from hosting the event,” cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah told PTI on the telephone from Rajkot today. He said the tournament would not be viable for the board without the tax exemption for which International Cricket Council president Malcolm Gray and then BCCI president A.C. Muthiah met Sports Minister Uma Bharti and other senior government functionaries here last summer. Mr Shah said Sri Lanka was the front runner among the alternate venues with Sharjah and Australia also in contention. A final decision on who is to host the third edition of the tournament, due this year, will be taken at the ICC executive board meeting in Kuala Lumpur in March, he said.

Kapil comes to players’ help New Delhi, January 9 Not only this, the ONGC has also promised Kapil Dev all its support “to build a very good cadre of fast bowlers” as part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) move to create a fast bowling academy. The ONGC presented Virender Sehwag, the new sensation on the cricket block, with a cash award of Rs 1 lakh, as Sehwag had grown up with the organisation to reach his present stature. When Sehwag joined the ONGC in March 1999 at the Delhi office, he was selected to play for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, after playing for the India under-19 team in the World Cup in South Africa. He also played in the Duleep Trophy, and on the basis of his performances in domestic tournaments, he was selected to play for one-day international matches against Pakistan, New Zealand and in the triangular series in Sri Lanka. “He has played many great innings and scored more than nine centuries for ONGC in all-India tournaments and had also given creditable performances in the Public Sector Control Board and All-India Public Sector Tournaments. His performance as an all-rounder is acknowledged by the ONGC fraternity, as he has single-handedly won many matches for ONGC”, said Mr Raha while honouring the dashing player. ONGC also honoured other cricketers in its rolls, like opening batsman Gagan Khoda of Rajasthan, left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi of Delhi, medium pacer Amit Bhandari of Delhi, Mohammad Kaif of Uttar Pradesh, Test fast bowler Ashish Nehra of Delhi, off-spinner Sarandeep Singh, who migrated from Punjab to Delhi this season, Pradeep Jain of Haryana, Feroz Ghyas of Haryana, Rizwan Shamshad of UP, Mithun Minhas of Delhi, Manoj Mudgil of UP, Sandeep Sharma of Himachal Pradesh, Amit Sharma of Punjab Ranji team (who belongs to HP), Mohammad Saif of UP, Gautam Vadhera, Radhey Shyam and Sandeep Dogra of Delhi. |
Waqar puts Pakistan in command
Dhaka, January 9 The visiting side looked set to take a big first innings lead, reaching 126 for three at stumps, with Yousuf Youhana batting on 14 and night-watchman Saqlain Mushtaq on 1. After electing to field, Waqar took six for 56 and made up for the absence of long-time partner Wasim Akram, who suffered a shoulder injury after sending down just 15 deliveries. Waqar struggled with the new ball but struck a fine rhythm in the post-lunch session to take his 22nd five-wicket haul in 75 Tests. He removed Habibul Bashar and captain Khaled Masud off consecutive deliveries and came up with another dual-strike in his next over. The 30-year-old seamer induced an edge from Sanwar Hussain and bowled Fahim Muntasir with a yorker in the space of three deliveries. Waqar later removed Mohammad Sharif and Enamul Haque as Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for just 20 runs. Seamer Abdur Razzaq and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria shared the other four scalps. Razzaq, coming on after Akram pulled a shoulder muscle, dismissed openers Mehrab Hossain and Al- Sahariar in successive overs. Hossain was caught at short leg by Shadab Kabir off an incoming delivery and Sahariar was trapped leg-before. Leg-spinner Kaneria got the important wickets of Mohammad Ashraful (27) and Aminul Islam (25). Pakistan started strongly with openers Taufeeq Umar and Shadab Kabir putting on exactly 100 runs. Taufeeq compiled a cautious 53, while Kabir struck a strokeful 55 off 61 balls. Kabir continued the fine form he showed in a knock of 92 in the tour game against Bangladesh’s second-string. Kaneria, who took seven wickets in that warm-up game, also justified his inclusion in the side with some tight bowling. Kaneria came in for fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, whose bowling action is under scrutiny from the International Cricket Council and faces a one-year ban if reported again by the umpires. Bangladesh went in with two spinners, debutant off-spinner Fahim Muntasir joining regular left-arm spinner Enamul Haque. Salgaocar shock ITI, move on top Margao, January 9 Salgaocar, who dominated the first half, got the first goal in the 36th minute through Alvito D’Cunha. ITI forced Salgaocar on the defensive in the second half but received a jolt in the last 10 minutes when striker Kenneth Onu limped out of the ground due to leg injury and ITI had to play with 10 men as they finished their quota of three replacements. Salgaocar capitalised on the advantage and after missing two easy chances pumped in two goals within two minutes of injury time to seal the fate of ITI. Salgaocar, who have collected 12 points from seven matches, move to the top of the table displacing Mahindra United, who also have 12 points with one match less on account of superior goal difference. ITI, who lost their first match, remained on 10 points from seven matches and are placed fourth. Salgaocar had the ball possession in the first half and combined well both in the midfield and upfront. Bruno Coutinho played in tandem with playmaker Eugene Gray and Climax Lawrence as they worked methodically, spraying passes to their upfront. Salgaocar had the first scoring chance in the 22nd minute. Following a flag kick, Alvito played a short pass with Jose Esteves who in turn relayed back to him. Alvito sent a goalbound shot to Sunday Seah but the latter failed to connect from close. A few minutes later, Bruno had a good chance to put his team up but he ended up shooting straight to keeper off a pass from Bello Razaq. After keeping the pressure continuously, Salgaocar finally found success. Sunday Seah worked his way on the right and sent a high cross into the box where Eugene Gray headed to Alvito D’Cunha who tapped in from close to have Goans leading 1-0 at half time. Bangalore: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), who made a bright debut in the National Football League securing 11 points from its first six outings and placed second, take on FC Kochin who are desperately looking for a win in the seventh round clash here on Thursday. Unmindful of the defeat at the hands of Punjab Police in the last match, HAL have a psychological advantage over FC Kochin who could gather only six points from as many matches.

Paes, Bhupathi to skip Dubai meet
Dubai, January 9 The ace pair, who last week won the Tata Open ATP doubles title in Chennai, the star attraction here in the previous years will miss the February 8 to March 3 tournament as the dates clashed with San Jose tournament. “The duo were committed to playing in the San Jose event, dates of which clashed with the tenth edition of the Dubai tournament,” Leander’s father Dr Vece Paes was quoted by a local daily here. The absence of Paes and Bhupathi, who have a huge fan following here, will be a great disappointment for the Asian expatriates. Russia’s Yevgeny Kafelnikov ranked fourth in the world, No. 5 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanesevic and Britain’s Tim Henman are some of leading men’s players to enter the championship. The women’s event also has an equally formidable lineup with Americans Venus Williams and Monica Seles and French Sandrine Testud promising an exciting clash. The tournament Managing Director Colm McLoughlin said there were concerns about safety and security as most Americans were reluctant to travel to the Middle East after the September 11 terrorist attacks. “There were concerns but we assured them about the safety and security in Dubai,” he was quoted as saying adding that the security would be further tightened this year.

Finally, govt job for national champ Patiala, January 9 Unemployed young archer Vishal Kumar had risen from poverty and fought adversity and odds alike to win Punjab’s first ever gold medal in the olympic round of the archery event in the 31st National Games. Vishal, a carpenter’s son, had beaten two-time olympian Limba Ram to get gold in the individual event. At that time the President of the Punjab Archery Association (PAA), Mr K.S Kang, who is also the Commissioner of the local Municipal Corporation, had said that in recognition of the Patiala archer's stupendous effort, he would strive to provide Vishal employment so that his talent may not wither away and that he may continue to bring laurels to the state. Primarily due to the efforts made by Mr
Kang, Vishal Kumar had now been employed as a fireman with the Municipal Corporation and from now onwards the young archer would not have to worry about the financial constraints while concentrating on the sport. When Vishal won the gold, many people attributed his effort to luck but actually it was the young boy’s hard work over the years coupled with a sound temperament and technique that enabled him to win Punjab’s first ever gold in the archery event of the National Games. Before Vishal came into the limelight during the 31st National Games, the two-time junior national champion was so poor that he could not even complete his studies and had to drop out of high school before taking up the job of a scooter mechanic in an attempt to make both ends meet. During the games, Vishal was helped by Mr Kang who gave him his own equipment to enable the youngster to keep his date with destiny. Vishal turned up an impressive performance and one by one he managed to beat some highly acclaimed archer’s like Limba Ram, Satyadev, Harish Kerai and Kailash. |
