Robbers injure sadhus, decamp with Rs 2,000
Ludhiana, June 18
As many as five armed robbers with muffled faces struck at a ‘dera’ near Rajgarh village early morning today and beat up three persons, including two sadhus, before decamping with about Rs 2,000 in cash, besides other valuables.

Officer, clerk booked for cheating
Ludhiana, June 18
More than an year after a scandal of over Rs 9 lakh was exposed by a teachers’ organisation, the Jagraon police today finally registered a case on cheating and other charges against a former Block Primary Education Officer of Block Sudhar and a clerk who is already under suspension in the same case.

The City Welfare Society, a non-government organisation, has served legal notice or the state government, on behalf of the state government pensioners, alleging that it had embezzled crores of rupees from commuted pensions, thus cheating retired persons.

Hundreds of telephones in Bharat Nagar, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Punjab Agricultural University, Bhadaur House and several other parts of the city remained out of order for several hours today. 

Rs 5.62 crore for development

The Punjab Government has sanctioned Rs 5.62 crore for various development schemes in the district and out of this Rs 2.60 crore have been released under the special component scheme, said Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Minister for Higher Medical Education and Chairman of the District Planning and Development Board, while talking to the mediapersons after presiding over the meeting of the board here today.

Tohra rules out unity move

2 held for opium smuggling
Ludhiana, June 18
The CIA wing of the city police today claimed to have busted a gang of narcotic smugglers who were using women and children as ‘carriers’ in order to escape suspicion. Two male members of the gang have been arrested while the police was conducting raids to arrest other persons involved in smuggling.

Acting on a tip-off, the Khamano police raided Deepak Medical Store at the Badeshan road, here yesterday and arrested its owner, Amarjeet Ram, for storing and selling drugs without prescription.

Farmers to be compensated for distress sales
Ludhiana, June 18
Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, today said that the district administration had received an amount of Rs 6.60 crore to be disbursed as compensation among 14,490 farmers, whose paddy was sold below the minimum fixed price during kharif season 2000-2001. He said that the instructions had been issued to disburse of compensation within two weeks.

Students get personality development tips
Ludhiana, June 18
A 15-day workshop on personality development organised for the students of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, concluded here today. During the workshop, the students were taught about ways to enhance their communication skills, build vocabulary and improve their pronunciation.

The Maha Sabha, Ludhiana, yesterday organised a cultural and drama festival at Government High School Sunet in honour of Baba Bhan Singh Sunet. A grand cultural show was presented, which was highly appreciated. The cultural programme lasted till 1 p.m. and the programme started with different social organisations which were fighting for justice, offering their tributes to the martyr Bhan Singh. Col. J.S. Brar, president; Chairman Darshan Singh Gill of Maha Sabha (regd) and Giani Bhaktawar Singh of Bhai Ghanaiya Social Welfare Organisation were present on the occasion.

Water-borne diseases on the rise

Spread of water-borne diseases in the city has reached menacing proportions. Private clinics are receiving a number of patients of jaundice, typhoid, gastroenteritis and diarrhoea, whereas a few have been reported at the local civil hospital.
