When should the PGI Director, Mr S.K. Sharma, retire? At the age of 60 or 62? The special selection committee of the PGIMER, on January 5, 2000, recommends the appointment of Prof S.K. Sharma as the Director of the institute for a term of five years or till he attains the age of superannuation, whichever is earlier, and was unanimously approved.

The UT Administrator, Lieut Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), today asked the Chief Engineer, Mr Puranjeet Singh, to explore the possibilities if the existing single-storey building of the ISBT-II, Sector 43, can be converted into a multi-storeyed building to make the optimum use of land.

Kuldip Singh resigns as WSC chief

Justice Kuldip Singh (retd) has resigned as President of the World Sikh Council. He has relinquished the office from the afternoon of June 16, according to a statement issued here today by Maj Gen Narinder Singh (retd), working Secretary-General of the WSC.

Jacob (retd), will be meeting the Union Minister for State for Petroleum, Mr Ram Naik, in Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the issue and sort it out.

Thakur Hans Raj 91-year-old tough guy

Do not let this benign face and innocent smile fool you. This 91-year-old Thakur Hans Raj is one of the “tough guys” of yesteryear. He served Chandigarh as the first police Inspector and also ‘played’ with grenades and booby-traps during World War II at several locales in Africa and Iran under the British Army. Sitting in his residence in Sector 18, Thakur Hans Raj recalls the day he took charge as Inspector in November 1966.

Briefcase containing 40,000 snatched
Panchkula, June 18
Two unidentified scooterists reportedly snatched a briefcase containing Rs 40,000 from Mr Sudhir Kumar Gupta, a resident of Sector 8, when he was going to his office, here today.

5 burglaries in a week
Lalru, June 18
Burglars struck at five shops in Saini Market here and decamped with goods worth thousands of rupees within one week. According to shopkeepers, the burglars enter the shops by breaking open the doors and search the targeted shops and decamp with electronic goods and cash. 

2 held for stealing computer parts
Chandigarh, June 18
The police arrested two persons who were reportedly caught redhanded while stealing computer parts from Udyog Bhavan in Sector 17 here. Mr Raj Kishan, security guard at the bhavan, reported to the police that Devinder Singh and his friend, Naveen Sharma, both residents of Sector 22, were caught redhanded.

Pro-lecturer step hailed

The Chandigarh District Council of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union has welcomed the decision of the Director Public Instruction (Colleges), UT Administration, to release the advance increments to the private college lecturers with research degrees in the city in accordance with the UGC notifications of 1996 and 1986.

The Students Organisation of Panjab University has blamed the university authorities for not cooperating with the students’ organisations. They have claimed in a press release that copies of the result gazette are being made available to Syndicate members which are of no use to them, whereas student organisations have to pay hefty amounts to get these.

Police remand extended

The police remand of Bhupinder Jit Singh, a resident of Moga, was further extended yesterday by the UT Judicial Magistrate in a case of dowry death. He was declared a proclaimed offender in a dowry death case early this month.

Kalagram to have craftsmen from all over India
Chandigarh, June 18
Kalagram, which began functioning here under the auspices of the North Zone Cultural Centre from May 7, has started gaining popularity. A crafts bazaar and cultural programmes are being organised here daily. Timing for the crafts bazaar are 6 pm to 9.30 pm and for cultural programmes and activities from 8 pm to 9.30 pm.

Need to create awareness of rights among disabled
Chandigarh , June 18
The Secretary, Social Welfare, Mr G.K. Marwaha, today stressed the need for creating awareness among the disabled and their families for successful implementation of their rights under the People With Disability Act. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a one-month training programme for village rehabilitation workers under the National Programme of Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability, Mr Marwaha said this required sensitising the family members , doctors, teachers and social workers.

House panel team to visit PGI
Chandigarh, June 18
The 21-member Parliamentary Estimates Committee will visit various departments of the PGI, including new OPD, Emergency, Advanced Paediatric Center and the Lithotripsy Center tomorrow. The team comprising 16 members of Parliament besides five officials, will take a round of the institute from 10 am. to 2 p.m.

Garbage bins health hazard for students
Chandigarh, June 18
When at last the Municipal Corporation has installed dust bins in Sector 15, it has placed these at the worst possible locations. The bins have been installed in the ground adjacent to DAV Model School in the sector, causing problems for children, who have to bear the stench all the time.

'Upgrade homoeo dispensary’

The Residents Welfare Society, Sector 46 has demanded upgradation of the Government Homoeopathic Dispensary in Sector 47 to a hospital. According to president of the society, Mr S.P. Jand, more than 100 patients from adjoining sectors visit the dispensary every day.

MCC panel decides to privatise streetlights
Chandigarh, June 18
The Finance and Contract Committee at its meeting held under the chairmanship of the Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal, here today decided to go ahead with the privatisation of streetlights in the city. Besides this, estimates for undertaking various development works pertaining to providing external electrification at waterworks, installing tubewells and constructing a new fire station in Sector 26 were also passed.
