MC to take over water supply, sewerage
Hopeful of saving Rs 1 crore
SAS NAGAR, Jan 30 — With a view to cutting the expenditure on the maintenance of the public health works in the town, the SAS Nagar Municipal Council is planning to take over the water supply and sewerage from the Public Health Department, Punjab.

Help for quake-hit Gujarat continues
CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — Residents of Chandigarh and its surrounding areas are continuing their efforts to help those who have been affected by the earthquake in Gujarat. Cheques for Rs 33.24 lakh were presented to the UT Administrator Lieut-Gen J.F.R Jacob (retd), here today, as contributions towards the earthquake relief fund.

110 structures face demolition
PANCHKULA, Jan 30 — Over 110 structures which have come up in violation of the Scheduled Road Act on the Pinjore-Nalagarh national highway 21A will be demolished by the Building and Roads wing of the Haryana Public Works Department.

More buses from Sec 43 ISBT
CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — Buses bound for Jalandhar, Batala, Amritsar, Jammu, Katra, Manali, Kullu, Nangal, Talwara via Ropar will originate from and terminate at the Inter-State Bus Terminus in Sector 43 from 5 am to 8 pm from February 15. Enquiries can be made at telephone number 383453. Buses on this route will continue to originate from and terminate at the Sector 17 ISBT during night hours.

CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — Intensifying the drive against defacers, the Chandigarh police has booked as many as 15 advertisers and traders for hanging banners and pasting posters in different parts of the city during the past 24 hours.

Student commits suicide
CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — An 18-year-old Ram Darbar resident, Ranbhir Singh, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison this afternoon, while 25-year-old Pooja, a resident of the same colony, was admitted to the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital with serious burn injuries. Her saree had reportedly caught fire while she was cooking.

Rickshawpuller hurt
CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — Muni Ram, a rickshaw-puller, was injured after being hit by a scooter on the turn of Sectors 23 and 24, here yesterday. The victim was admitted to the PGI where his condition was reportedly stable. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

PANCHKULA, Jan 30 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Amtex Suitings Private limited, Industrial Area, to pay a lumpsum compensation of Rs 500 to Ms Puneet Arora, a resident of Sector 9, for selling defective cloth.

CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — Finding deficiency in service of Grand Travel Planner, Chandigarh, the UT District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum II today directed it to pay compensation to a city resident for charging more money for cancellation of British Airways tickets.

Commission dismisses CHB’s appeal
CHANDIGARH, Jan 30 — An appeal filed by the Chandigarh Housing Board against the order of the UT District Consumer Forum I, penalising the board for deficiency in service, was dismissed by the UT District Disputes Redressal Commission here today.
