Shaun Pollock sends Windies reeling JOHANNESBURG, Nov 26 (AFP) An early burst of three wickets by Shaun Pollock gave South Africa the advantage on the first day of the first Test against the West Indies at The Wanderers today. The West Indies were 249 for seven at the close. Shivnarine Chaderpaul played a dogged innings of 74 but the tourists were unable to recover fully from their early setbacks. Pollock had the West Indies reeling at 41 for three when he dismissed Clayton Lambert, Philo Wallace and Brian Lara after Lara won the toss and decided to bat on what looked a good batting pitch. Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper stopped the collapse when they put on 91 for the fourth-wicket before Hooper was caught at first slip off Allan Donald for 44. Pollock, newly-appointed vice-captain to Hansie Cronje, finished the day with figures of three of 51 but it could have been better if he had held three sharp caught and bowled chances. He had Lambert caught behind for 16 and then bowled Wallace, after dropping him on nought, and Lara. Pollock later dropped Carl Hooper and Nixon McLean. Hooper offered a chance to
Pollock before he had scored. He went on to make 44 in a
fourth-wicket stand of 91 with Chanderpaul despite
batting with a runner for most of his innings after
suffering a groin strain when he slipped while stretching
forward for play a defensive shot against Jacques Kallis. |
India enters final of Asia Cup NEW DELHI, Nov 26 (PTI) Defending champions India defeated Chinese Taipei 2-1 to set up a title clash with second seeds Uzbekistan in the $ 84,000 ATF Asia Cup Tennis Tournament at the DLTA Centre Court here tonight. After both teams shared the singles 1-1 in their semifinal, the Indian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Syed Fazaluddin beat the Taiwanese duo of Chen Chih Jung and Lin Bing Chao 6-4, 7-5 in the deciding doubles rubber. Earlier, Indian spearhead Mahesh Bhupathi brought the hosts back into contention with a 7-5 6-2 win over Chen Wei Ju after teammate Prahlad Srinath had lost the opening singles 4-6 3-6 to Lin Bing Chao. Earlier, Indias semifinal campaign received a jolt when Prahlad Srinath lost to Lin Bing Chao in 85 minutes. The Taiwanese national champion, Lin, who made his Davis Cup debut this year, played with composure and consistency during long rallies, which gave him an edge over his opponent. After both players had held their serve till the fourth game in the first set, Srinath broke lin with a forehand crosscourt winner. But he dropped his serve in the next, double faulting twice to lose advantage. The Indian broke Lin in
the seventh, only to be broken in the next game. |
India finish
15th in golf meet CHANDIGARH, Nov 26 Playing under difficult conditions, India finished joint 15th along with Colombia in the 21st Eisenhower Trophy Golf Tournament held in Chile from November 19 to 22, according to reports available after the return of the five-member team to India. India had a total score of 879. The joint team of Great Britain and Ireland (852) took the top spot followed by Australia (856) and Chinese Taipei (858). In all, teams from 52 countries with a total of 208 golfers took part in the championship, the top-most international tournament for amateur golf. In the individual championship India's Harmeet Kahlon, who is Chandigarh-based, finished 11th with a score of one over 287. The other Indian golfers in the fray also did reasonably well. Digvijay Singh, who is from Meerut, had a score of 296, followed by Amit Dube with 301 and Amit Luthra with 306. The last two golfers are from Delhi. For the sake of comparison the top golfer in the tournament, Kim Felton of Australia, had a score of 275, eleven under. All the four Indian golfers who went to Chile will represent the country in the Bangkok Asian Games. The tournament was played on two courses, the Los Leones Golf Club which has a par of 71 and the La Dehesa Golf Club which has a par of 72. Each team had to play two rounds on each golf course alternately. Speaking to TNS, Harmeet Kahlon, India's leading amateur golfer, said the experience the team picked up in Chile should stand the team in good stead in the Bangkok Asian Games next month. Also, he was all praise for non-playing captain Dilip Thomas, who according to the rules of the tournament could accompany the golfers through the course. Harmeet said at Chile he could meet his coach, Donato D'Ponziano of Italy. Ponziano had accompanied the Italian team to the championship. The Italian team finished 21st in the tournament. Harmeet said the behaviour of the course was totally different from what he had experienced on Indian courses. However, the experience should help him to improve his game. Harmeet said he was
practicing hard for the Asian Games. As per the programme
of the Indian Golf Union the golf team for the Asian
Games would assemble in Delhi on December 2 and then fly
to Bangkok on December 5. |
Sampras dismisses Moya, books semis berth HANOVER, (Germany), Nov 26 (AP) Pete Sampras is playing too well to have to worry about figuring out the intricacies of the round-robin format. After beating Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-3 yesterday, Sampras was not even aware that he had clinched a place in the semifinals of the ATP world championship. "Thats nice to hear," Sampras said after being told at the post-match news conference that he had secured a place in the last four. "Its certainly a good feeling to be here over the weekend," Sampras said. Meanwhile, Andre Agassi dropped out of the tournament because of a back injury and will be replaced by Greg Rusedski. Agassi retired in the third set of his match against Alex Corretja yesterday. Sampras is seeking to become the first man to finish as No. 1 in the world for six years in a row. Marcelo Rios, the only player who can threaten Sampras, trails by 33 points in the computer rankings and has to do better than Sampras in the elite season-ending championship that brings together the top eight players of the year. But Rios, who was not scheduled to play yesterday, lost his first match to Tim Henman and is battling a back injury. He now has to win his next two round-robin matches to reach the semifinals and stay in the chase. The eight players are split into two groups and Sampras and Rios cannot meet until the semifinals. "It helps," Sampras said of Rios losing the first match. "Im also helping myself by winning. I cant really be too concerned about what Marcelo is doing." "I have to concentrate on my matches. If I take care of things myself and go out and win, then it should be hopefully good enough. But I must admit I was rooting for the Englishman (Henman) yesterday," Sampras said. Sampras was certainly good enough to beat Moya in only 62 minutes. Moya, the French Open champion who is now 1-1, had beaten Sampras in a group match last year but Sampras went on to win the $ 3.5 million event for the fourth time. On Tuesday, Sampras was equally impressive in dismissing Yevgeny Kafelnikov in straight sets. "Its not easy to play well like I have been today and yesterday. I was coming into todays match pretty confident," Sampras said. I wanted to make sure I was coming in a little bit more than last year, chipping and charging, trying to put as much pressure on him as possible." Last year I must admit I felt a little flat. This year, with the ranking up for grabs, I just made a concerted effort to come here a little bit early and prepare as best as I can. "Its obviously a very big week for Marcelo and I. I just wanted to give myself the best chance possible to play well here," said Sampras, who fired 13 aces. Corretja was leading 5-7, 6-3, 2-1 when Agassi quit. Agassi was practising with Corretja on monday when he fell and hurt his back and has been receiving shots and other treatment since then. "It was definitely painful even this morning in my warmup. I needed to give it a go, at least try to keep the points short," said Agassi, who won the event in 1990. "But I hit a swinging volley and when I twisted it was just like somebody stuck a knife in me. Pretty soon it got quite pointless," he said. Rusedski will play Rios today. Corretja plays Henman and Sampras meets Karol Kucera. Kafelnikov beat Kucera 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2 in the last match Wednesday and improved to 1-1. Kucera dropped to 0-2. Although he has surged back to No. 4 this year after falling as low as No. 141 at the same time last year, Agassi has not done well at major tournaments this season. " The year has been
great for me in many respects, but the great tournaments
have been pretty disappointing," Agassi said.
"Ive worked really hard and had to grind week
after week to get myself in position, only to struggle
when I got into position." |
Coach predicts better performance at Asiad NEW DELHI, Nov 26 (PTI) Chief national athletic coach Bahadur Singh said today that India would register a far better performance than in the July Asian meet at the 13th Asian Games to be held in Bangkok from December 6 to 20. The former Asian Games shot put gold medallist refused to predict the number of medals from athletics a paltry one silver and two bronze at Hiroshima in 1994 but an improved tally of one gold, three silver and eight bronze medals at the July Fukuoka Asian athletic championship. "As per training this season, I have no doubt they will do better than they did in Fukuoka. Medals always depend on how other countries do and hence I wont give any figure," Bahadur Singh said at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where the athletes entered their final training stretch. The Amateur Athletic Federation of India will hold final trials on December 1 for male javelin thrower Satbir Singh, besides woman shot-putter Harbans Kaur and javelin thrower Gurmeet Kaur the two have not achieved qualifying marks and for Jincy Philips and M.K. Asha to pick the reserve runner in the womens 4 x 100 m relay team. Most of the 27 athletes chosen after the inter-state meet in Calcutta have achieved the qualifying standards with some marginally short of the requirements. Bahadur Singh said veteran track star P.T. Usha had recovered well enough from a hamstring trouble suffered at the recent inter-state meet in Calcutta to touch her peak in Bangkok. "She will definitely do well in Bangkok," he said. The chief coach said unlike earlier occasions, Indian athletes were better prepared for a major international outing like the quadrennial Asian Games. Earlier we used to ask them to touch qualifying marks and they used to touch their peak in advance of such meets. "But now there is more planning. The athletes had touched only their 90 per cent in competition and you will see them go past those marks," he said with much confidence. Asked about Indian throwers coming good only in domestic meets, but faltering against international opposition, Bahadur said that would not be repeated and said even a 20-metre mark by Shakti Singh or Bahadur Singh in shot put "is not impossible." The national record set by Shakti Singh at the recent Calcutta inter-state meet stands at 19.73 metres. The Indian athletic contingent will leave here in two batches. The first batch will emplane for Bangkok on the night of December 8, with the second group scheduled to leave on the night of December 12. Bahadur Singh had much hopes from distance runners Bahadur Prasad, returning to top form after a heel injury, and the diminutive Gulab Chand, who won two medals in 5000-10000 m at the Fukuoka meet. He said China and Sri Lanka would be the ones to look out for in womens events while Japan, China, Korea and Qatar would be the leading lights among men. UNI adds: Sprint queen P.T. Usha said she was confident of getting back to winning ways in her record fifth appearance in the Asian Games. The Payyoli Express, who had participated in all five Asian Games from 1982, is among the Indian athletics squad undergoing training at the preparation camp which began at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here yesterday. |
SAI
communication causes confusion PATIALA, Nov 26 With just 10 days to go for the start of the Bangkok Asian Games nearly all pre-Asiad preparatory camps in progress at the NIS here have been thrown in a state of disarray primarily due to a Sports Authority of India (teams wing) communication received by all the chief coaches here today. The SAI teams wing communication has indicated the number of sportspersons to go to Bangkok in each discipline, but surprisingly the names have been withheld. Earlier the Judo Federation of India (JFI) had selected a 14-member squad (7 boys and 7 girls). The number was later reduced to 10. But as per the SAI communication received today by chief coach of the judo squad Nusrat Ali Khan, a six-member contingent will be sent. Whether this includes the chief coach and his assistant Sangeeta Mehta is not known. A visibly upset Nusrat Ali Khan told this correspondent: "The confidence of the judokas has been shaken. The authorities with this attitude are killing whatever medal hopes I had. It is difficult to motivate them during training". The boxing camp in progress at the NIS here has also been badly hit. Earlier the boxing federation had selected six pugilists for Bangkok. But midway during the camp two boxers were dropped with assigning any reason. This announcement came as a major psychological blow for the boxers training for the Asian Games. Now the four Boxers, Dingko Singh, Harpal Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Jitender Singh are facing uncertainty and as it is learnt that the axe may fall on Dingko Singh. The reason being given is that in his weight category (bantam weight) Dingko will have to face an Olympic bronze medalist and a Goodwill Games gold medalist. The IOA feel Dingko is not a medal hope. However, chief coach GS Sandhu is confident that Dingko will be cleared for the Games. The SAI (teams wing) communication is vague as it has mentioned the departure and arrival plans of a six-member squad. No names have been specifically mentioned, although it is assumed that out of the six, four will be pugilists and two coaches. The uncertainty and suspense is proving to be detrimental towards the medal hopes. The wrestling camps (greeco-roman and freestyle) have also been hit. Earlier the lone matman in the greco roman category selected for the Asian Games was Gurbinder Singh. The name of Kaka Pawar was added later. But a strong rumour that Kaka Pawar may not make it has caused among matmen utter confusion. In the freestyle category after a six-member squad was announced, suddenly Rakesh Kumar was dropped. In another late night development the kabaddi players left for New Delhi last night probably to participate in trials. Interestingly, there are two factions in the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) one led by Kuldeep Vats and the other by JS Gehlot. Till yesterday the camp of one faction was being held at the NIS here while the other faction was holding its camp at Jodhpur. Some players have even moved the Delhi High Court protesting against the delay in announcing the team following which notices were sent to the SAI, IOA and the AKFI. This endless wait for the
Union government's clearance is proving to be an
agonising experience for the campers at the NIS here. The
IOA which harps on the "medal prospect" theory
had recommended a 300-plus contingent for the games.
Despite today's communication from the SAI (teams wing),
no definite figures can be quoted because figures have
changed several times over the past few days. |

Beijing bids for 2008 Olympics BEIJING, Nov 26 (PTI) As part of Chinas renewed attempt to host the worlds most coveted sporting event, the Chinese capital, Beijing, today officially announced its bid to stage the 2008 summer Olympics. Beijing Mayor Jia Qinglin presented the application to Chinese Olympic Committee (coc), president, Wu Shaozu during a ceremony at the great hall of the people, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Commenting on Beijings bid, Wu, also Chinas Minister of State for Sports General administration, said it had been made after "careful consideration". "The coc and Beijing have both studied the feasibility of another bid", he said. "We think that as the worlds most populous country with a vigorous and growing economy, China should host the Olympic Games and make contributions to the Olympic movement", he said. Beijing lost to Sydney by two votes in the 1993 selection for the host of the 2000 games. "Coc is happy to receive the application (of Beijing)", Wu said. Xinhua said the coc will hold a meeting early next January to discuss Beijings bid. "If Beijings application is accepted, the coc will officially submit the bid to the International Olympic Committee (ioc)", the report said. After losing the 2000 Olympics bid, Beijing did not pursue the 2004 Olympics bid. "China bade for the 2000 Olympics but lost to Sydney by a narrow margin of two votes at the ioc election in Monte Carlo in 1993. Many people in China and foreign friends have expressed their hope that China would bid again for the Olympic Games", Wu was quoted as saying. The ioc is expected to open the bidding process for the 2008 Olympics next year and the selection of the host city will take place in 2001. Other countries, like Argentina, Canada, Japan, Spain and Turkey have already announced their intention to bid for the 2008 Olympic Games. AFP adds from Hong Kong: Hong Kong will press ahead with plans to share the 2008 Olympic Games with China, sports officials said today while admitting a formal application by Beijing slimmed the territorys chances. The Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong is pushing to co-host the games with neighbouring cities in southern China. "We have been lobbying hard for Shanghai and Guangzhou," said committee spokesman Bernard Fong. "Beijing would make the logistics that much harder. We would also be competing with other northern cities such as Tianjin. Down south it seems obvious for Hong Kong to share", he said. Beijing while formally
announcing its bid today for the games did not rule out
other cities from applying. |
Innings
victory for Haryana ROHTAK, Nov 26 Haryana registered victory over Jammu and Kashmir with a convincing margin of an innings and 176 runs on the third and final day of their Vijay Merchant Trophy encounter at Vishwakarma Stadium here today. On resumption of play today the visitors, who were 35 for 2 in their second innings after facing follow on, needed another 228 runs to make Haryana bat again. But their batsman lacked willingness to stay at the wicket and show some resistance. Haryana did not need any extra effort to complete their second successive victory with an innings margin over their rivals in the Vijay Merchant Trophy this season. Haryana bowlers had to bowl only 31.5 overs today to consume the remaining eight J and K wickets to fold their inning at 87. Only two batsmen Vimarsh (17) and Inderjeet Singh (30) could reach double figures. For Haryana right arm leg spinner Ashwani turned out to be the wrecker-in-chief consuming six out of the eight wickets which fell today. The leggie had struck thrice in the first innings also. The remaining two wickets were shared by Gaurav Vashishta (8-5-9-1) and Deepak Joon 2-0-5-1. |
