Golden Temple approach roads in need of repair & renovation

Devotees as well as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) are irked over the deplorable state of the roads leading to the sacred Darbar Sahib.

The office-bearers of SGPC have voiced their displeasure, citing difficulties faced during the Nagar Kirtan processions on Gurpurb celebrations.

Choked sewers and garbage strewn on roads have become a recurring issue, causing inconvenience to thousands of devotees who visit the shrine daily.

The SGPC has taken to social media to highlight the problem, posting videos about the neglected roads on its official handle while interacting with devotees.

As the situation continues to draw attention, the community awaits tangible results, hoping to restore the dignity and grandeur of the Golden Temple’s approach roads.

The SGPC’s officials have demanded immediate action to address the issue. “The Golden Temple deserves better roads. We urge the authorities to prioritise the maintenance of these roads,” said an SGPC representative.

Devotees claimed that they faced inconvenience due to potholed roads and poor sanitation conditions in the area. “The roads are filthy and leave a bad impression on visitors coming from other cities. During recent rains, the areas around Golden Temple witnessed waterlogging which caused inconvenience to the visitors and residents. The MC should recarpet the road from Sultanwind Gate to Langar Hall of Darbar Sahib as it is being used the mostly by visitors,” said Sardool Singh, a devotee and regular visitor.

In response, the Municipal Commissioner claimed that the road is already slated for renovation under the Smart City project. “We understand the significance of the Darbar Sahib and are committed to upgrading the infrastructure. Radial roads project has already been proposed under the Smart City mission,” MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh said.
