Ludhiana, November 21 The minister was here to launch the National Urban Health Mission. The hospital has only 49 beds. It was supposed to have 100 beds. The intensive care unit and newborn unit are yet to come up. The minister said the hospital would have all facilities by the end of this month. On staff shortage at the hospital, he said state-level recruitments were under way. “The process is on and we will fill the posts soon,” he said. Senior Medical Officer Dr RK Karkara said, “Principal secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Vini Mahajan visited the hospital. He said since A block OPD had already been started, we should go ahead with the inauguration. Man, daughter booked for fraud
Ludhiana, November 21 Complainant Kuldeep Singh of KS Rubbers told the police that he had invested Rs 43.5 lakh in Gurdial’s KE Enterprises. Kuldeep said when he asked the father-daughter duo to clear the dues, the accused started adopting dilly-dallying tactics. Gurdial Singh approached Kuldeep with a business plan of purchasing rubber from China at cheaper prices and took Rs 10 lakh from him. Neither the accused brought rubber nor they returned the money. When Kuldeep asked Gurdial to return his money, he refused. On October 7, Kuldeep Singh approached the police and sought action against the accused. After probing the matter, the police registered a case and started investigations. Division No. 5 SHO Beant Juneja said raids were conducted at the house of the accused, who were today booked for fraud and criminal breach of trust under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Rs 10 lakh
A youth snatched Rs 10 lakh from a commission agent at Dhandra Road last night. The accused, along with his two accomplices, fled in a Verna car. The agent noted down the vehicle’s registration number (HR- 51- Z-6224). Complainant Sunil Kumar, a resident of Dhandra Road, said he had collected Rs 10 lakh from various grain market traders. When he was returning home in his car, his son Ankur called him up asking him to stop midway as he (Ankur) needed money. In the meantime, a youth approached his vehicle and requested for a lift. Sunil told the youth that he was waiting for his son and would drop him once his son arrived. The youth kept standing near the car at Pehalwan Da Akhara in the Dhandra area. Ankur arrived to collect the money and when Sunil was about to hand over the cash to him, the youth snatched the bag. Sunil said he and his son tried to catch hold of the snatcher and even raised the alarm, but he sat in the car and escaped. Sunil then informed the police about the incident. Soon Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police and ADCP (Special Security) Harmohan Singh reached the spot. Sunil’s son Ankur was also questioned by the police officials. Robbers targeting businessmen arrested
Ludhiana, November 21 The three, who had robbed shoe traders of cash, mobiles and injured one of them with a sharp weapon, was arrested last evening following a tip-off. The accused were presented before the court which sent them to police remand. The police said the trio had lost count of the robberies they were involved in. Joginder and Narinder, both residents of a colony located in Laxmi Cinema, said they were returning home on Wednesday night after a business trip to Delhi. When the rickshaw reached near Laxmi Cinema, they noticed armed men. They told the rickshaw-puller to take the road leading to the railway station. However, the assailants accosted them and stopped them. They asked the traders to hand them the cash. When Narinder objected and refused, one of the assailants attacked him with a sharp weapon. Frightened, Narinder and Joginder handed over Rs 20,000 and their two mobile phones. It was a second such snatching incident in the area. Last week, a hosiery trader was robbed of Rs 8.50 lakh. Investigating official said they had received a complaint and had started investigations. Kotwali station house officer Surinder Mohan said 11 mobile phones and Rs 12,000 in cash were recovered from the accused. The station house officer said the accused were school dropouts and were addicted to drugs. They would catch businessmen by surprise and then rob them at knife-point. |
LIT and its employees can’t part ways easily
Ludhiana, November 21 Information obtained by RTI activist Gagandeep Singh Threeke from the LIT revealed that out of the total staff strength of 120 in the Trust, as many as 19 employees and officials had been staying put for more than five years, another 58 had been occupying the same posts for more than 10 years and 14 others had completed more than 15 years at the same post without any fresh posting elsewhere. The information provided by the LIT authorities indicated that nine employees had completed 20 or more years of service at the same seat. As if it was not enough, six employees had not been transferred for the past over 25 years or more while there were other employees who had not moved for the past 30 years (12) and even 35 years (2). Although it sounds ridiculous, sources in the LIT disclosed that the employees and officials, who were promoted many a time, were not shifted due to their proximity to political leaders and senior bureaucrats. “Such acts are in violation of the government directions and rules,” said the sources. Directions issued by the Personnel Department on transfers and posting of employees of government and semi-government departments, boards and corporations as well as autonomous bodies clearly lay down that an employee or official should not occupy the same seat for more than three years and the same place of posting for more than five years. In a complaint lodged with the Department of Local Government, Punjab, Arvind Sharma, secretary, Council of RTI Activists, has demanded a high-level inquiry into gross administrative irregularities in the Trust and stern departmental action against guilty officials. |
Soon, you can get your learner’s licence by post
Ludhiana, November 21 The transport department is in talks with the postal department. Garg said, “The issue pertaining to the charges is being worked out.” For availing the facility, an applicant will have to deposit an envelop with his/her address and stamps along with the form. To facilitate the applicants, the transport department is trying to convince the e-postal department to open its counter at the DTO office. At present, the applicants have to make round of the District Transport Office to get documents and forms. Many a time, they return without getting their works done. Once the service starts, the applicants will not have to shuttle between offices. Nivedita, a resident, said, “For my son’s licence, I had to go to the District Transport Office thrice. The department has taken a wise decision.” The online facility for applying for learner’s licences is not being liked much. Happy days are back: Xmas cake amid carol singing
Ludhiana, November 21 “It is a great tradition,” said Dr Anil Luther, who makes Christmas cakes every year. “We use cashews, almonds, raisins, cherry and peels to prepare the cake,” he said. “It is called the Christmas cake and we make it once a year,” he said. “Some people mix the dry fruit in rum and add more things,” he said. Chef Gautam from Brewmaster, who was part of the cake mixing at the restaurant today, said they mixed dry fruit, dry peach, anjeer, cherry in rum and red wine. “The ceremonies start now because the recipe takes about a month for fermentation. It is later mixed with other ingredients, including flour, for baking the cake,” he said. “It is great fun to mix things all-together,” said Shweta, a resident. The ceremony was also organised at the PCTE Institute of Hotel Management today. Surinder Bisht, assistant professor at the institute, said Christmas cakes were usually made in advance and then kept upside-down after baking in a safe airtight dish. The cake is fed with small amounts of brandy, rum or whisky into the holes of the cake every week until Christmas. Dr CK Singh, Senior Veterinary Pathologist, was declared winner of ‘Fellowship of Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists’ for the year 2014 for his outstanding achievements in veterinary pathology. Dr Pranoti Sharma, a student of veterinary pathology, bagged the ‘Young Scientist Award’ for best oral research paper presentation entitled ‘Least Invasive Ante-mortem Diagnostic Approaches for Rabies’ co-authored by Dr CK Singh, Dr D Narang, Dr NK Sood, Dr BS Sandhu, Dr K Gupta and Dr Apminder Pal Singh Brar. During the congregation, Dr NK Sood presented a lead paper on the emerging issues of ‘Diagnostic Cytology of Peritoneal Fluid in Bovines’ and Dr Amarjit Singh on ‘Recent Advances in Diagnosis of Bovine Tuberculosis’. Schoolteachers stage protest
Ludhiana, November 21 They urged Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Finance Minister, Punjab, to release their pending 30 per cent arrears and salaries. Gurmeet Singh Madanipur, general secretary, Punjab Aided School Teachers and Other Employees Union stated that the teacher and employees of working in aided schools have been facing discrimination. “We don’t receive salaries and installments of arrears on time while all the other cadres of teachers have got their third installment of arrears. We met CM Badal and he assured us to address our problems. The cases of grade pay of lecturers, lab attendants have been pending for years. The Education Department had not implemented the decision given by the court in this regard.” “The government did not implement medical and house allowance as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission. If the government does not show any concern to our demands, we will stage protest. Highway accidents trigger fear, concern
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 21 The drivers of the heavy vehicles, allegedly, ignore the traffic rules and regulations while, the occupants of lighter vehicles are also at the receiving end. This tendency has resulted in a massive damage to life and property of the residents in the recent past. It is learnt that many precious lives have been lost due to the reckless and irresponsible driving, commuting from Ludhiana to neighbouring states. Besides colliding with other vehicles, many heavy vehicles have also damaged houses and other commercial establishments. Interestingly, no case has even been registered wherein the losses pertained to property only. Even in cases where accidents have been fatal, the victim families accepted the tragedies as their fate and did nothing more about it. Majority of cases registered for alleged reckless driving were not pursued till conclusive end due to compromise between the victims and accused parties. Social pressure and long complicated procedures for pursuing cases were identified as major factors behind the compromises. Residents say the administration should take preventive measures to check the tendency and take a stern action against traffic rules violators. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gurpreet Singh Sikand, said the SHOs and beat officers had been directed to initiate legal action against those found flouting traffic rules. In the recent past, speeding trucks and heavy vehicles had caused damage to shops and vends near Majri Road, Kilaraipur Chowk, Sahenewal Chowk at Dehlon, Kup village, Dehlon, Gopalpur, Lehra and Pohir villages, situated along the Ludhiana-Malerkotla highway. Four youths of a peasant family of Jagera travelling in a tractor were killed when a speeding truck collided with the vehicle during the concluding phase of Mela Chhapar. Earlier, congress workers Daljit Singh and Bhagwant Singh were also killed while returning from Mela Chhapar. Sewage workers sans safety kits
Jagraon, November 21 The poisonous gases emitting out of the sewerage lines pose a serious risk to the lives of the cleaners. Although several sewage cleaners have lost their lives while cleaning sewages due to the lack of safety kits in the past, but the government is yet to learn something from the tragic incidents. The government has allegedly failed to provide enough safety kits to the sewage cleaners. According to sources, there are around 15 sewage cleaners working for the local Sewerage and Water Supply Board but there is not even a single safety kit available with the department for the cleaners. “The government has not provided any safety kits for cleaning the sewage. In fact, we have never seen the safety kits meant for the sewage cleaners. Whenever we have to clean the sewage, we have to perform this difficult task without the safety kits,” said sewage cleaner, while cleaning the sewage on the local College Road. The leaders of the union representing the sewage cleaners claimed that they have raised the demand of providing safety kits to the sewage cleaners with the authorities a number of times but the government has failed to provide safety kits to the cleaners so far. The Sewerage and Water Supply Board, Jagraon, junior engineer (JE), Shinderpal Singh, said, “After taking the responsibility of cleaning sewage from the Municipal Council in September 2014, we wrote to the state government to release funds for purchasing safety kits for the sewage cleaners. Residents write to DC seeking road repair
Khamano, November 21 The residents, in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib claimed that the road starting from GT Road, Khamano Kalan and Khurad Khamano is in a bad shape and has not been repaired for years now. Some people have filled the potholes with sand which has further aggravated the problem for commuters. In case of rain, the flowing muddy water hinders the crossing and the commuters have to go through diverted routes to reach their destinations. Schoolchildren are the worst affected as they have to pass daily through the route. The complainants further stated in the letter that a number of people of the adjoining villages also have to face inconvenience due to the bad condition of the road. The residents have urged the authorities concerned to repair the road at the earliest to ensure that the traffic flows smoothly. Formers MC officials Sarabjit Kaur, Inderjit Singh Romi, Ravinder Kumar, BJP leader Kuldip Madan, Mandip Singh, member of the Market Committee and some others have signed the letter. Following the directions of civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta and under the supervision of Dr Anil Verma, district epidemiologist, a team of 20 breeding checkers, along with insect collectors and multipurpose health supervisor checked the coolers of different areas to detect the breeding of Aedes Egypti (larvae of dengue). A meeting of the District Planning Board with the Federation of Industrial and Commercial Organisation (FICO) was held under Hira Singh Gabhria, chairman of District Planning Board, regarding the change of land use (CLU) for industry. Efforts of PCR bike patrol fleet pays off
Ludhiana, November 21 However, three suspects managed to flee the scene. Giving details Jagjit Singh, who is attached with number 68 PCR motorcycle, said as per routine they were patrolling in the Basant Avenue area when they spotted five persons sitting at a vacant plot. They got panicked on seeing them. On seeing Jagjit, the suspects started running. In the process, one of the suspects snatched the mobile of his accomplice. Jagjit gave the suspect a chase and nabbed him. On being nabbed, the suspect said the person from whom he had snatched the mobile phone was also a snatcher. In the meantime, Jagjit’s colleague nabbed another suspect. The suspect said they were running an auto-rickshaw gang and robbed innocent passengers. CITU flays NDA govt for repressive policies
Ludhiana, November 21 Addressing a protest rally of industrial workers in front of the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office at Gill Road here today, CITU leaders, including former legislator Tarsem Jodhan and Jatinderpal Singh alleged that facilities secured for workers after extended struggle were being snatched by Centre and the SAD-BJP Government in Punjab. Asserting that labour laws were being flouted with impunity by the employers in connivance with officials of labour department, they said no action, till date, had been taken on the charter of demands served upon the Labour Department by the representative body of workers in May 2014. On the continuing menace of child labour, the CITU leaders said this massive social evil would not be abolished by just observing an anti-child labour week once a year. “If the government really intends to abolish child labour, it ought to ensure reasonable wages, adequate health care, good living conditions for workers and education for poor children.” |

Ludhiana, November 21 Addressing mediapersons here today, the BKU, VP, Gurmeet Singh Golewal, and secretary general Puran Singh Shahkot said the HC ruling had vindicated the extended struggle of the union against the exploitation of farmers by arhtiyas and money lenders. The BKU leaders said it was a standard practice that blank stamp papers and cheques were taken by the money lenders/arhtiyas from the borrowing farmers and in case of default, amount and rate of interest of their choice was filled up in the blank papers by them. In many cases, the demand for inflated amount and exorbitant interest had led to the defaulting farmers committing suicides. |

In a snatching incident, three youngsters riding on a motorbike robbed an NRI of Rs 3,000 cash and a gold ring. The incident took place today evening when Gagan, a resident of Africa, was heading towards Sarabha Nagar. “On witnessing rush at the traffic lights, I decided to drive through Gurdev Nagar,” Gagan said. On reaching Gurdev Nagar, Gagan stopped his car near a park to answer nature’s call. Just when he came out of the park, three motorcycle-borne youngsters stopped. Deepak and his mother Bindu Bala said they were crossing the police station this afternoon when they saw residents of their locality standing in the police station. They entered the police station to ask the reason. In the meantime, ASI Balwinder Singh came there. The duo said the ASI, who held personal grudges against them, was pressing them to withdraw some case registered at the police station as he was supporting the other side. They added that when they refused to withdraw the case, the ASI allegedly started slapping them. Man booked A 55-year-old woman today staged dharna outside commissioner’s office at Mini Secretariat and demanded the arrest of her husband. The complainant, Indu Panday, said it had been two months since her husband Vijay Panday was booked for forcibly making her consume poison, but the police had not made any arrest till date. Indu Panday said she was married to Vijay for 18 years and had two sons from her previous marriage. Recently, Vijay called her mother and brother to stay with them. This led to turmoil in the house and Indu thought that Vijay would abandon her and children. Indu said on September 21 this year, Vijay forcibly made her consume poison following which she was also admitted to Civil Hospital. Later, a case was registered against the husband. Indu said now Vijay threatens her and the children of dire consequences. Theft bid at gurdwara Two persons were arrested for trying to break open the donation box at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Moti Nagar. The accused have been identified as Sunny of Ashok Nagar and Nishan Singh of Bhattian while their third accomplice Goldy is still on the run. The accused had attempted the robbery on November 19. While the accused were trying to steal money, president of the gurdwara reached the spot and raised the alarm, but the trio managed to escape. A case was registered on the complaint of Sukhdev Singh. KCW athletes shine at PU inter-college meet
Ludhiana, November 21 Aneeta Chaudhary, a student of BA I, bagged two medals. She finished ahead of others to bag top honours in the grueling 5,000 m and 10,000 m races. Aneeta also figured in the 4x400 m relay race team that secured the fourth position. Meanwhile, Amanpreet Kaur won a bronze medal in the 400 m while Harveer Kaur bagged a bronze medal in the heptathlon event to make their presence felt. In the 4x100 m relay, the quartet of Amanpreet Kaur, Harveer Kaur, Anjali and Varsha finished third to win a bronze medal.
