Pampered paws
They are more than pets. In fact, they are more than family members. So, don’t be surprised if you get invited to a birthday party of someone called Puggy or come across a Facebook profile of a pug named Eddy Rally
There was a time when petting a dog served a purpose—protection. Though these animals still serve a purpose, the realms of it have inverted. As dogs become less of a pet and more of a family member, there are some in Tricity who take time out and go the extra mile to look after the apple of their eyes and make them feel special. And, why not? If we can spend time and money on all other family members, why not your best friend? We speak to some of these proud dog owners…
Spa-cial treatment This 24-year-old pets a four-and-half-year-old pug and quirkily calls him Bacardi. While Bacardi prides himself in sleeping in his very own dog house, he usually prefers Mehak’s bed. Not only bed, Bacardi also gets to have a matching pair of shoes and blazers. “We pamper him like the youngest in the family. He eats small amounts of boiled chicken in all three meals with chapatti. Once every month, he goes to Animal Kingdom in Sector 26 for a spa session. And, most importantly, his birthday is a grand event at our house each year. We invite kids over from around our house and cut the cake. He’s seriously everyone’s heartbeat at home!” says Mehak.
Virtual bond He goes by the name of Rally, Eddie Rally. Finding this three-year-old pug’s life or tracing his paw prints, quite literally, isn’t very difficult. Just search for ‘Eddie Rally’ on Facebook and voila! Eddie is so much a part of the Rally family that Maanvi went through the trouble of creating his Facebook profile, and now, Eddie proudly flaunts a long list of 200 friends! Ask her how she keeps his profile updated, and she says, “Whenever Eddie is out for an outing, or travelling with us, I click pictures of him and upload them on Facebook. He gets plenty of ‘Likes’ too! Not just pictures, though. His statuses are all about his mood on any given day – from grumpy and hungry to paranoid and joyous.” This profile has made Eddie Rally quite the star of his locality. Not only does he stroll like a boss amidst the stray dogs of his lane, he also finds a huge fan following with kids. “At his birthday each year, we have about 30 kids over. We cut a cake and sing for Eddie. We also treat our stray dogs to some fresh eggs,” says Maanvi.
Barbeque bash Every dog indeed has his day. Going by the way six-and-half-year-old Puggy’s birthday is celebrated, the wait for that day is totally worth it! “We organise a barbeque party on Puggy’s birthday and he gets to have the biggest birthday cake, among all family members, on his birthday. Though we did not put much effort in naming him, I think we’re overcompensating now! Not only does he enjoy the luxury of sleeping with the boss of the house, he also wears clothes brought especially for him all the way from China,” says 24-year-old sound engineer Ranbeer Sidhu.
Doggy bag
If you’re tired of not having time to cook a nutritious meal for your beloved dog, there’s finally help at hand. Instead of resorting to readymade dog food, you can now opt for freshly made dog tiffin being provided by PetsPro in the tricity area. Prepared in olive oil, this packed meal is tailor- made by dog nutritionist from Mumbai, Ankita Katani. In Chandigarh for four months now, PetsPro provides your dog with healthy staples such as brown rice, chicken liver and a mix of five vegetables. And, they deliver at home!

A cultural outing
This time it’s the North in its complete glory which is being captured at the
6th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela at Kalagram
The curios and crafts all seamlessly blend into the red soil, lending and at the same time borrowing the rustic touch. In the 6th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela, organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh Administration and North Zone Cultural Centre, the exhibitors, artisans and the handicrafts come together to portray the rich heritage that we proudly refer to as culture. While this year they promise to bring in the colours and sounds of North India, the regulars at the fare will vouch, it is more consistent than different. The exhibitors continue to come from far off states and remain similar and so do the places they come from. Support Kashmir
It is time to love all things from Kashmir for an altogether different or for an altogether additional reason. It is time to patronise the state that has been through a recent turmoil but all along dressed the country in beautiful phirens and pashminas. “We have firens, stoles, shawls, jackets in needle kadhai, aari kadhai and kani work available in pashmina. The range begins from Rs 250 and goes up till Rs 12,000,” shares Zahid Hussain from Vaani handicrafts. After the clothes, there are crafts from Kashmir. The colourful knick- knacks and utilities like box, piggie bank, a key ring, a candle stand… “They are all hand painted and one box takes anywhere from 1 to 2 days,” shares Sayeed Ajaz Shah from Kashmir, while proudly displaying his National Award for Master Crafts Persons & Weavers.
Aroma & flavour
Picture the staple stalls dishing out Rajsthani food, Hyderabadi biryanis, a stall serving Chinese called Shanghai Chinese Food, the appetizing Delhi Chat Bhandar and the ever favourite Citco Da Vehra. Go for the aroma or stay on for a meal, there are options galore for both vegetarians and hard core meat lovers. Fabric of India
They don’t sum up North without ringing in the Punjabi footwear. Do they? “The beauty of these juttis is that 80 per cent of them have been manufactured by women. Earlier, they used wood and hard sole, which has been replaced by foot friendly fiber. We have already exhibited at Dubai, Singapore and Perth. The response from the Gulf is always great,” shares Madan Rathor from the Patiala-based MR Trading Co. If there is jute art from Assam, there is silk from Benaras. “We specialise in sarees and running dress material in brocade and silk, chiffon and even cotton,” shares MA Qadri, having won a state award for a stole. “It was a zari stole and I received the award for the karigiri.” Then there’s cotton from Coimbatore. “My items are exclusive. I only use very high quality cotton and we only make towels,” shares R. Krisna Prasad. All along a few things generously dot every alternate stall; Kashimiri exhibitors with pashminas, stoles and scarves in all shapes and sizes, ornaments from across the country, home utilities and earthen wares. Wedded to luxury
Weddings are a lavish affair in India and it is only fair to indulge in them lavishly! Perhaps that reasons the concerns of the organisers of the two-day-long wedding exhibition, Doli— The Wedding Grandeur’s Season II, at The Lalit, Chandigarh.
In the labyrinth of as many as 83 stalls, the exhibition caters to all your wedding needs under one roof. “Well, since the wedding season is around the corner, we wanted to offer the city folks a one-stop solution for all their wedding needs,” says, Neha Amit Singla of A Million Dollar Affair, the organiser of the exhibition. While this is their second exhibition in a year, Neha shares that she will soon be organising another such exhibition in February 2015. “Also, we will be organising a similar exhibition in Ludhiana on December 13 and 14 this year,” she shares. With a variety of jewellery, Indian and Western attires, and footwear, the exhibition offers a series of wedding services, including wedding planning, photography, catering and designing as well. A stride across the exhibition hall offers a sight of the extraordinary and that too in abundance. The jewellery stores, including Elegant Jewels by Alka, Yehweh Jewellers, Dazzling Bling, Stuti Jewel Art, and Shreeda Designs, the stalls offer a range of earrings, pasas, arm cuffs, hair chains, and anklets in kundan, silver and bronze. But that’s not just it! For all those who intend to buy some fancy clutches and potlis in digital Indo-Western prints on fabric, the stall titled Divinity offers quite an interesting twist. “These bags with mythological figures on them (including Lord Shiva) are all made on fabrics like velvet, cane and even brocade,” says Megha. While stalls like the Dressing Loft, Divalicious Delhi, Mafadeny, and Roohi’s Wardrobe provide an ensemble of Western wear, including printed coats and sweaters, there are other stalls that cater to Indian wear as well. The ones most recommended are the Pakistani stalls like The You and Libaaz Mojaris. However, you may also checkout stalls like the Handicrafi Pitara, which offers a variety of handicraft materials like hand-painted lamps, showpieces and folk art paintings. Also, one of the elitist ventures of the exhibition is a stall by Zara Diamond, which offers a diamond-studded iPhone and watches. And the buzz is that Punjabi actor, Hektor Sandhu, gifted his wife a diamond-studded iPhone. “I think that proves my love for my wife,” he laughs. The actor, accompanied by another Punjabi actor, Zafar Khan, inaugurated the exhibition. Other interesting stalls at the exhibition are the Deepika Deep Clicks by photographer Deepika, who also clicked portfolios of Shah Rukh Khan, Varun Dhawan, Aakriti Kakkar, Baadshah and Hardy Sandhu, among many others. If there’s anything else you need to know, then there’s a tarot card reader on board

Notes of remembrance
An age-defying singer is timeless, indeed. Having been a producer for Marathi shows and Bhojpuri movies, Shashi Khanna decided to cut an album of Punjabi songs and explore a new and soulful side to her life. In Chandigarh on Saturday for the launch of her first album, Nach Di Ve Main Nach Di, Khanna says the six-song album is dedicated truly to her late son Vikas Khanna. “He was a very famous child artiste in Bollywood, having worked with the likes of Rajesh Khanna and Jitendra. Due to an unfortunate road accident, he passed away a decade ago. I was in deep depression for a year, but decided to take control of my life all over again. With the help of the harmonium, I started to hum for myself, which gradually evolved to first singing a couple of songs for a Bhojpuri film and now, Punjabi.”
Why Punjabi? “That’s who I am. Though I’ve been living in Mumbai for decades, I was brought up in Delhi in a typically Punjabi household.” Ask her why the remarkable shift from production to singing and she says, “I’ve been into production for the past many, many years, and it’s serious hardwork. Frankly, I was tired of doing the same thing with my life; and I had done more than my fair share in Maharashtra’s regional cinema, besides Bhojpuri also. And then I got my inspiration in the form of Vikas. So, I knew singing was the way to go.” About the album, the first video of which has garnered more than 7,200 ‘hits’ on YouTube within a month of being uploaded, she adds, “The album has six songs; five in Punjabi and one in Hindi. The songs are a mix of Punjabi boliyan that are always an essential part of every Punjabi wedding, there’s also a sad song as well as a peppy, romantic number.” And what’s next? “I’m working on the video of the second song right now. After that, maybe another album; who knows!” somya@tribunemail.com

Fashionable lanes
While luxury never really rubbed shoulders with crowds, it needed patrons to exist nevertheless. Exclusive exhibitors bring in limited buyers. Call it a good thing, call it a bad thing. No swarming crowds, no cramped stalls, no parking woes. Together they can perhaps offset the fact that there is not plenty to choose from. The Indian Luxury Expo debuts in Punjab (Chandigarh to be precise) with all the luxury names promised in tow. Only the footfalls were amiss. Crowds? Shares Karan Bhangay, founder-director, already high on the editions of Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune, “With Chandigarh, we test waters in Punjab, and get to read the market and what really ticks here.”
To begin with, there are over 20 lifestyle labels covering art and collectibles, cars, accessories and of course, apparels. Unlike countless other lifestyle exhibitions, there are two things in abundance; time and space. The automobiles parked neatly in the lawns, on both sides, lead you up to the indoor exhibitors. Pause to admire the Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi lined up on either side, stop by for a quick bite from Kylin Experience or F-Bar or move ahead for what’s in store. There are jewellery exhibitors namely, MB Jewellers & Sons, Shagun Jewellers and Gitanjali Jewels. However, what stood apart was the exhibitor Life, on Your Table. Clear bowl glass jars with rare indoor plants with ornamental value! Accessories & apparels
There’s Patyala Royal Couture, with wedding alternatives for the bride and couture for the immediate family. Moving on, there’s yet another city name we have always associated with photography - Gurudev Photographers with the latest in wedding photographs, with a host of electronic options. There are beautiful visual art works with rustic themes by Amanpreet Singh. There is also a contemporary arts label Arrested by Art by Anupam Tomar. If there’s art, there’s also skincare. The skin care range by Betty Nangia, promises to provide holistic skincare solutions. (On at The Grandeur, Zirakpur, till November 16)

A designer platter
With all other aspects of our lifestyle taking the designer route, it is now time for designer sweets that should look sensuous besides melting in your mouth. Putting her culinary expertise to use, Bharti Sanghi drew upon her experiences in a typical Marwari household to infuse new life into rare and traditional delicacies.
Bharti set up her own industrial unit and launched two brands; LIFE, for fruit beverages with two special sugar-free variants and HOME ALONE, for customised Indian sweets. In Ludhiana to take part in the ‘Wedding Asia’ extravaganza, Bharti shares “I used to experiment in the kitchen as a teenager and after learning the nuances of traditional Marwari cuisine, tried to combine the best of both.” Appreciation from friends and relatives spurred her to start her venture professionally and the rest is history. Bharti’s most innovative research is using food technology to create theplas, phulkas, gattas and panchmela dal with a shelf life of one year. She has also created a range of sugar-free Indian beverages, which use imported sweeteners, like the Ginger Ale squash, and a ready-to-serve Lime Beverage. These beverages are low on sugar.
With the ‘sweets’ scene shifting to chocolates, cakes and other bakery products, Bharti has taken up the challenge to re-interpret age-old recipes and give them a contemporary twist. She offers delights like the Kaju Jalebi, Pethe ki Gilori, Kaju and Badam samosa too! However, her specialty lies in giving the mithais a modern twist like the Peach Half Sandesh, Peach Chocolate Sandesh and the Chenna Pista Apple. A modern twist is given to traditional Indian flavours with the pista cake, which can be served like a post dinner dessert and the pista and almond tartlets. Bharti also uses imported sweeteners to create a range of sugar-free mithais like rabdi, kalakand, phirni, chandrakala and pista barfi. Bharti’s extensive knowledge of authentic recipes has led her to create delicious snacks, including designer samosas with exotic fillings like corn, noodles, bean sprouts and Chinese vegetables; Tirangi Maathi, and cocktail kachoris. She also offers customised catering for weddings and special occasions. Her extensive knowledge of Marwari, Gujarati and Rajasthani cuisine has helped her create elaborate meals as thalis. Some of her Rajasthani dishes include, besan masala puri, bedmi, kadai puri, baafla, panchmela daal, ker sangri and the famous gatte ki subji. Bharti has made a name for herself among food lovers with her melt-in-the-mouth dahi and gunjia badas, stuffed bati and kabuli rice. In the traditional Gujarati thali, she has undertaken unique innovations like white dhoklas, tiranga dhoklas, and water chestnuts with butter. She has taken the pains to delve into ancient recipes, and even include long-forgotten dishes like the Nadru ki Shammi, Phogle ka Raita and the Gvar Pattha (a curry dish made from aloe vera). This food enthusiast is still experimenting, blending old and modern cuisines to delight your palate. |

Meet the Barbie girl
After Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra, Barbie Handa aka Mannara is the latest Chopra girl to enter Bollywood. She is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Anubhav Sinha’s Zid. She talks about the film, her role and more. Being Mannara
My real name is Barbie Handa. I want to grow up a little and move from Barbie to Mannara. Mannara is a Greek name, meaning something that shines. And, of course, we all want to shine in our respective professions. Anubhav sir (the film’s producer) felt I should change my name. Even Priyanka agreed. Mannara was the right name because Anubhav sir wanted the name to start with the letter ‘M’ because he is a big fan of Madhuri Dixit. So am I. I can watch Hum Aap Hai Koun...! and Dil To Pagal Hai any number of times. My younger sister’s name is Mithali, so my mom was happy that the name starts with M. Layered character
The character Maya has many layers. She is a young girl, full of life; it’s about how she falls in love for the first time. Then you go deep inside the character and she looks dangerous and angry. There are so many emotions I could not say no to it. Bonding with Priyanka
I am close to her mother (Mannara’s mother is Priyanka’s paternal aunt). I stay at Priyanka’s old house in Mumbai. I am close to her as well. I used to borrow her clothes and shoes. Ours is a close-knit, typical Punjabi family. Going topless
For you, it’s a topless poster but when I was to shoot the poster I told PC (Priyanka Chopra) that this is something Anubhav sir wants to shoot. I was a little unsure. PC told me to go for it, but ensure that it’s done aesthetically and not looking sleazy. I think it looks beautiful. The poster shows the dangerous, flirtatious, bold and sexy side of the girl. I only trust my director. There has to be a certain level of trust and understanding especially when you know that it’s such a difficult character to play. No copying
I can take inspiration from my family members but I don’t want to copy Priyanka or Parineeti. I have my own style. When people are talking about me, be it positive or negative way, it’s me who is involved in the discussion. No one can run on their father or sister’s name for a long time. It is you who people should like and not anyone else.
A colourful story
Reena Datta and Aamir Khan’s sister, Farhat Datta along with two other renowned artists, Lotika Talwar and Laxmi Honavar, have organised an exhibition of their paintings. The event, which is supposed to be held in Bandra, suburban Mumbai from November 20 to November 23, will showcase artworks which will bring out their unique voice and vision and giving expression to their individual paths of exploration. The exhibition is very special for all of them and they have personally sent out invites to friends and family to be a part of this beautiful and vibrant outing. All four artists have depicted interesting stories with their paintings.
Wrestling with inner-self
Sidharth Malhotra wakes up an hour early to prep for his role as a wrestler. Sidharth is known to get into the skin of his character. Only three-film-old, he has garnered kudos for his acting skills. The actor, who has played versatile roles so far, will now be seen playing a very different role of a wrestler in his upcoming film. Sidharth wakes up an hour earlier than usual everyday to spend time in solitude. It is his time to prep himself and he needs this time to mentally get into the skin of his character. As a wrestler the actor will be seen in a certain kind of attitude. His body language will be far from anything he has ever done.
Good news
Actress Sameera Reddy, who got married early this year to businessman Akshai Varde, is expecting her first child. While the actress remained unavailable for comment, a friend of hers confirms the news, saying, “Sam is expecting and we all are very happy for her.” We are happy for her too and wish her a joyous and safe pregnancy.
Bips’s birthday wish
Bipasha Basu and Harman Baweja have separated, at least for now but she was sweet enough to post him a birthday message on Twitter along with a photo of them together. “Happy Birthday Harman:) Happiness love peace success forever.” We wonder how Harman feels.
Sallu blesses the couple
Fukrey actor Pulkit Samrat’s reception was held recently in Delhi. Salman Khan made a point to go and bless the couple. Pulkit’s wife Rohira is said to be Salman’s Rakhi sister.
Happy with the end result
Ileana D’Cruz says that she was offered a role with Saif Ali Khan before Barfi! happened and she did not like the role and did not take it up. She loves the script of Happy Ending and her role in it because it is at par with Saif’s role and the movie is unique and
un-emotional.

Hirani miffed with brands
Raj Kumar Hirani is contemplating taking legal action as a lot of brands are cashing on the popularity of his next film, PK. He is seeking legal advice to explore what can be done.
He has been buried with editing work and has had no time to be noticing things around him. When people around him showed the advertisement and the merchandise item he was shocked. The film created a huge stir among the audiences right from the release of its first poster. From that day, the level of interest in PK has been increasing day by day and everyone is very curious to know more about the film. We now hear of some brands taking advantage of this situation. The director recently came across an advertisement of a web portal using PK to sell grocery items like potato and kaanda (onion) on their website. They are even cashing on the release date as the value is same Rs 19. On another instance, inspired by the most talked about transistor, we got to know of a merchandise company using it to sell card holders. Merchandise was showcased only last week. Everyone even in the film unit is eyeing transistor as it’s become a coveted item. Anushka had also made this request. Yes, their card holders are in the shape of a mini transistor. A source says, “When the director Raj Kumar Hirani heard about this, he was perplexed as he was not aware of this before. The director is now contemplating on taking a legal action against them. He will be meeting his internal legal person to discuss the matter and take advice on how to tackle this situation. There might be a press conference to make his stance clear.” PK releases on December 19. |

Hrithik attends Zayed’s trailer launch
Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan may have parted ways, but the actor seems to be keen on maintaining a cordial relationship with his ex-wife’s family. Some time back, Hrithik had apparently promised to help Sussanne’s brother, actor Zayed Khan, promote his upcoming film. And, for the same, now, he is set to make an appearance at the film’s trailer launch that will take place today.
“It was Zayed’s idea to invite
Hrithik, as he felt that would help create more buzz for the film. They’ve always shared a good personal equation. What happened between Hrithik and Sussanne has not affected their relationship at all,” says a source. Keeping in mind Hrithik’s busy schedule, Zayed made sure the actor was informed about the event a month prior. “There’s a possibility that he may even promote the film later,” adds the
insider. Zayed, who was last seen in Tezz (2012), is set to return to the big screen with this film that has been directed by
Gurmeet
Singh. Gurmmeet confirmed the news, saying, “Hrithik has readily agreed to extend his support. Having him at the launch will only make the evening more special for everyone. He has watched our film and has liked it.”
