Mass-marriage solemnised

Bhankhapur village today wore a festive look with villagers attired in new clothes and roads leading to the village decorated with flags. The occasion was a mass-marriage.

As many as 21 couples from poor families tied the nuptial knot during a ceremony organised by Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Bhankharpur.

The newly wed couples were given items of daily use apart from certain gold and silver ornaments at the ceremony, which was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who was invited to bless the couples. Badal congratulated Jathedar Kuldeep Singh for the noble cause, which will help in creating a healthy society.

Deepinder Singh Dhillon, former chairman of District Planning Committee, Patiala, local legislator NK Sharma, Bhupinder Singh Saini and other prominent personalities of the area also blessed the newly wed couples.

NDPS case
2 acquitted

Chandigarh, November 15
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge today acquitted two persons, hailing from Moga, in an NDPS case after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. The two were booked on the charges of carrying heroin. The court acquitted Jograj and Gursharan.

The UT police had arrested them on the charges of carrying heroin on December 28, 2012.

The police had recovered 850 gm heroin from Jograj’s pocket but failed to prove the allegations in court.

The defence counsel stated that there were contradictions in the statements of the witnesses and the police had failed to follow the procedure laid down under the NDPS Act while booking and arresting the duo.

Home Guards volunteer dies

A Home Guards volunteer of the Chandigarh Police died after the two-wheeler he was riding slipped on the dividing road of sector 21/34 on Saturday night.

According to the police, volunteer Vinod’s motorcycle slipped when he was trying to save a cyclist on the road.

The injured was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Meanwhile, the police are investigating the case.

5 arrested for fraud in city

Chandigarh, November 15
Five persons, including a woman, were arrested for attempting to procure a loan on the basis of a fake FDR of Rs 71.55 crore registered on the name of a Delhi businessman, Vijay Aggarwal, today.

The accused attempted to obtain the loan from UCO Bank in Sector 17.

The mastermind in the case, Deep Chand, alias Prince Kaushal, managed to give a slip to the local police.

The arrested accused were identified as Rajinder Kaur, Mohammed Adil, Parwinder Sidhu, Ahmed Mir and Paritosh Anand.

Sources in the police said the accused had approached the bank twice and every time enquired about the genuineness of the FDR that was declared fake.

Police officials said earlier, two persons had visited the bank taking the FDR along and the second time, other three, including the woman, approached the bank carrying the fake FDR.

Sources said the businessman, Vijay Aggarwal, was shown as a resident of Vasant Vihar in Delhi and his antecedents were being verified. The accused would be produced in a local court on Sunday.

A case was registered on the charges of cheating and forgery at the Sector 17 police station.

2 snatching incidents reported

Chandigarh, November 15
Two snatching incidents were reported in the city. A resident of Sector 21 alleged that unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants sped away after snatching her bag containing Rs 1,000 and important documents.

A case at Sector 19 police station has been registered in this regard.

In another case, Dheeraj Sharma, a resident of Yamuna Nagar, Haryana, alleged that three unknown persons riding a motorcycle snatched his mobile phone near Sector-31/32/46/47 roundabout and fled the scene. A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. In both cases, the victims failed to note down the registration numbers of the vehicles used in the crime. — TNS

The hosts — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56 — defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, by 118 runs in the opening game of the junior state women cricket championship for girls (U-19) held here today.

After electing to bat first, the winning side scored 228 runs in the allotted slot. Kajal’s 87-run and Shivani’s 84-run unbeaten knocks were the highlight.

In reply, the Sector 40 school could muster only 110 runs before getting out in 15.5 overs. Rajni (41) was the highest scorer. For the bowling side, Anjali Dhiman remained the pick of the day by claiming four wickets, while Kajal and Himanshi grabbed two scalps each.

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, will be facing Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, in the next match on Monday.

In the ongoing seventh Copper Open Cricket Championship, Bedi Cricket Club registered an eight-wicket win over Himachal Cricket Club here today.

Batting first, the losing side could put up only 132 runs on the scoreboard in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Opener Vishal remained the highest scorer with his 34-run contribution, while Hoshiar scored 20 runs. For the bowling side, Rajesh Patha claimed four for 24.

In reply, the winning side reached the target in 16.3 overs, with Sarbjeet (72 off 60 balls) and Rajesh Patha (36 off 32) ensuring the team’s win with their unbeaten contributions. For the bowling side, Hoshiar claimed two for 22.

Akshay and Kanav will face Vinayak and Kevin in the final of boys’ (U-19) category of the ongoing Chandigarh State Badminton Championship for Boys and Girls at the badminton courts of Panjab University.

In the semi-finals of boys’ (U-19) category, played today, Akshay and Kanav beat Adheip and Amit in a well-settled match at 2-1. After losing the first set at 13-21, the winning pair played excellently and won back-to-back games 21-17 and 21-16 , to ensure their place in the final.

In the second semi-final, Vinayak and Kevin beat pair of Ishan and Abhinav in straight sets at 2-0 (21-14, 21-18). In the boys’ doubles (U-17) category, Ishan while pairing with Amit defeated Shouraya and Shivam 2-0 (21-8, 21-8) while Abhinav and Paras overpowered Kevin and Vinayak 2-0 (22-20, 21-11). While in the boys’ doubles (U-15) category Shauraya and Anshuman beat Kartik and Shivam 2-0 (21-9, 21-19) and Paurush-Aman overpowered Ananta and Abhishek 2-0 (21-13, 21-11).

The CGA Junior Golf Tournament culminated at the Panchkula Golf Club yesterday.

In category A, Jaiveer Singh Sandhu clinched the title with a tally of 2 over (148) of the two day’s score, while in category B, Aadil Bedi won the championship with 10 over (154). Inderpreet Singh with 163 points claimed the category C title, while in category D Aditya Sood lifted the crown with the score of 165 points.

In category E, Angad won with a score of 88, and among girls, Lakhmehar Pardesi scored 204, Divya Datta scored 213, Komalpreet Deo scored 201, Puneet Bajwa scored 179 and Unaiza Babutta scored 117 points to lift the title in their respective categories.

Veterans’ athletics meet today

The Veterans’ Amateur Athletics Association will conduct the 35th Chandigarh Veterans’ Athletics Meet tomorrow at the Sector 46 sports complex.

The championship will be conducted in both men’s and women’s categories for athletes above the age of 30 years. During the meet, the organisers will also select athletes for representing the city at the 35th National Master Athletics Championship to be held Rohtak in March next year.
