fusion mantra: An Indian bandhgala jacket and a skirt is ideal for an evening out.

With the advent of the winter, it's only fair that the hemlines and sleeves get longer and allow the dark warm colours melt the cold rather fashionably! Often, as one romances with the idea of the winter, the mention of woollens and big boots is the first that fits the idea of style. Considering that we have almost worshiped the warm leggings and that cosy muffler around our neck, the trend, this season calls for making a rather bold statement with the traditional Indian look. Here's your style guide to experimenting with the desi avatar!

Bling on the jackets

Well, for those of you who fancy the idea of layering, it's time to invest in jackets. "This season, the tribal look is the in and the sleeveless jackets and long jackets are a good investment," says Sonal Manik, who is the owner of Sanskriti, a Panchkula-based designer brand.

"Also, an ankle-length bling-embroidered silk and velvet jacket teamed up with cigarette pants is an ideal choice this winter," she adds. Meanwhile, Mini Sondhi, the owner of Bling Bling, a fashion boutique in Panchkula, shares that achkans too are a hit this season. "I think, a long achkan with Kashmiri embroidery teamed up with a pashmina shirt and denims looks cool. Also, jackets made of raw silk and brocade and woollen anarkalis are a huge hit this season," says Mini.

Tribal influence

This season, flaunt your gypsy spirit with a tribal look while rooting for the small-scale industry based artisans and craftsmen. Jackets, skirts and even woollen kurtis with phulkari, kantha embroidery and even Kutch mirror work are a designer's favourite this season.

"Cropped tops in velvet and silk with sequins fabric teamed with either floor-length phulkari or kantha work jackets is a great choice," says Sonu Gandhi of Ludhiana based fashion label, The Sonu Gandhi Store. As she cheers for the fusion look, she avers that a silk skirt with mirror work teamed with kantha work jacket with a heavy mirror work tube is a perfect look this winter," she says. "Also, odhnis and stoles with motifs of kantha are a huge hit. This season, it's time to wear hand embroidered clothes," she adds.

Colour wise

It's time to tuck all the neons away and turn to shades like powder blue, powder pink, orchid even burnt orange. "The trick this season is to keep the embroidery and fabric in the limelight and therefore it is a good idea to invest in colours like orchids and orange with gold work, which blends with the colours," says Sonu. Meanwhile, Sonal shares that colours like maroon, plums, magenta and dark blues are quite in this season. "However, neon colours are a complete no," she says.

Kimonos and capes

Well, for those of you who want to go an extra mile in experimenting this season, then Chandigarh-based designer Sahiba J Singh votes for kimonos and capes. "I think short kimonos teamed up with long funky skirts look stunning and they also make one look slimmer," she shares. While talking of her recent collection at the Sahiba J Singh store, Phase 5, Mohali, she shares that in the winter, phulkari on pashmina is a good option. "The best thing about kimonos and capes is that they can be worn with jeans, skirts and even sarees, if you want to be a little more experimental," she says.

So, this winter, the key to style is constant experimentation. Go ahead and play!

Let the design speak
Designer Shehla Khan who has dressed almost 'all divas' of Bollywood prefers to be tight-lipped about her future projects and her muse
Manpriya Singh

No amount of nudging or rephrasing the question will fetch you the desired answers. Designer Shehla Khan will not pick and choose from the current crop of B-town actresses, most of whom she's dressed by now.

Who is it that she loves to dress up the most from the entire lot? Are there any all time favourites? Anybody who she feels does justice to her clothes more than others? Oops…like we said, there is no getting those one or two names out of the lot.
With karisma kapoor (L)
With karisma kapoor (L)

Alright, perhaps somebody she would really like to dress up. At the end of it all, comes a statement that despite being factual, can be mistaken for arrogance, "I have dressed almost everybody in Bollywood."

Err…so is there nobody, not even Hollywood whom she would really like to put her creations on? "I think I would like to dress up Blake Lively and Diane Kruger, for the way they carry off anything."

As of now, she's all set to dress up the North through an exhibition. "This is the first time I'm exhibiting in Ludhiana. I have a few clients from Haryana and Ludhiana. But this is for the first time I am bringing my collections to the city." The exhibition is all set to feature her signature suits, sarees and lehengas from both her couture and demi-couture range. Also, in the exhibition, the designer outfits worn by actresses like Sonam Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha et al, will be available for fans to buy.

While, she's, 'open to supplying to stores here', an exclusive retail store is not really on the agenda. Having done clothes for Jacqueline Fernandez in Kick, any more movies in the pipeline? "There are but I can't disclose about projects at the moment." Like we said, no amount of nudging or rephrasing the question will fetch you the desired answers.

The exhibition was hosted in Ludhiana on November 6.

Money minded!
Ambala girl Swati Bhargava's enterprise cashkaro.com is India’s largest coupon site in the online category
Jasmine Singh

She had everything going for her — a good job with a fat salary at Goldman Sachs and also a neat lifestyle till she decided to do a joint venture with her husband, something different!

The alumnus of London School Of Economics, Swati Bhargava, the girl from Ambala, has everything going right for their enterprise cashkaro.com which gains momentum length and breadth wise.

This pretty woman is handling her family and work with absolute finesse. It is the cashkaro.com that is rolling now. She is one of the first movers in the Indian cashback market, but it didn't smell success from the word go. "To begin with, when I went to Singapore for studies, everyone in Ambala was amazed. Thereafter the scholarships got me to the London School of Economics, where I met my husband Rohan. Back then we started pouringpound.com, which now he has taken to the next level as cashkaro.com," shares the young entrepreneur, taking us through what the cashkaro translates into.

"We basically offer cash coupons for various online shopping sites. It is as simple as that," she laughs.

The site was launched in April 2013 and since then it has picked pace in leaps and bounds. It is apparently India's largest coupon site in the online category. Building partnerships with e-retailers like Myntra, Jabong, Paytm and Amazon, took the couple almost six months. "We took risks and worked with third parties and developers who over-promised and under-delivered. We also had to put in processes that ensured retailers paid commission on time and play fair, so that our customers got paid on time. Today, however, we realise that those precautions and learnings have paid off well. We are now in fact being approached by many retailers themselves who want to get featured on our site," she shares.

Swati likes to travel in her free time; meditation gives her the balance, "much needed," she smiles effervescently. Things have just started rolling for her.

"I am looking at moving to other e-retailers such as Flipkart and Snapdeal as well. At the moment, we are working with around 500 online retailers and we plan to increase that number to a 1000, in a streamlined and controlled manner so that we can bring value to each and every one of these 1000 partnerships."

Working with her husband Rohan, Swati doesn't rule out creative differences, "They are part of the job, they never get too far for I know what I am doing and he knows what he is doing." Well, you should cash upon this advice!

Veggies — the kids’ way
Use a bit of imagination to convert a ghia or kaddu or brinjal into something new and colourful for your child
Madhu Sharma

Parenting can be great fun for all mothers, but what can be really frustrating is when the kids just refuse to eat, and that too vegetables or fruits. All mothers would unanimously agree with this fact of child-raising. There seems to be a constant struggle between them over a plate full of veggies or fruits.

But there is a way out for such tricky situations and winning over the child's stubborn tactics. It needs just a little tweaking of your standard recipes of those seemingly 'boring foods' to win over the child's whims. Secondly, children are very sensitive to taste, but these tastes gradually modify over a period of time depending upon the exposure or environment they get. Just a little patience is what works finally. You already know that kids love colour and variety or change. It is this characteristic of theirs that you need to exploit. Just cooking up your routine ghia or kaddu or brinjal or even beans into the standard dull-looking, bland or unappealing recipe, may only turn away the kid's curiosity and interest to eat. So what do you do? All that is required is a bit of imagination and effort to present the same stuff in a new, colourful form, which would probably arouse his or her curiosity and sense of exploration. Here are some tips:

  • Involve the child in picking the stuff of their choice from the supermarket or get them involved in washing or peeling and watch what you prepare (for older kids, of course).
  • Pair the veggies with one of their favorite dishes - pasta or pizza or parantha or even puri. You could, if possible, bake a healthy pizza by using soya granules and whole wheat flour in the pizza dough.
  • Some veggies can be camouflaged like the broccoli or carrot or peas into the flour dough (either boiled and mashed or grated).
  • You could make wraps laced with their favourite cheese and grated veggies, rolled into cylindrical shape - easy to carry and eat too.
  • Another way is to grate and mix the colourful veggies like peas, carrots and some spinach with boiled potatoes into cutlets or tikkis - ideal for their evening snack.
  • As kids are tempted by different colours and shapes, exploit these temptations by making rainbow sandwiches made in circles or triangles, topped with a colourful broccoli or cauliflower floret to give an effect of a tree. The inside stuffing could be a mix of grated veggies with any flavoured cheese and cream.
  • You could also make smoothies by mixing fruits and a vegetable like boiled and mashed carrot or beetroot along with plain yoghurt and a little orange juice, and freeze them like a lollipop or ice-cream.
  • Children hate mushy foods, especially veggies. So you could try to roast them or grill them with some brushing of oil and sprinkle of parmesan cheese for flavour.
  • Avoid force feeding. It will only make him or her repel more. They could be made to sit with a peer group and help themselves, making it a fun activity.
  • Be patient. Never give up trying. Kids' tastes change gradually with age. It might take them a dozen exposures of the same food to be able to finally accept and like it.
  • If they want a special favour out of you like a new toy or game, set your terms. Have them eat at least one new vegetable each time. Gradually, they will adapt to the new flavour.

GET PHYSICAL
Make the most of winter
Vishal Thukral

No matter what time of year it is, exercising helps to keep the body in shape. The heat and humidity in the summer can dry and tire the body faster but cold weather is perfectly suitable for the exercise regime. However, listed below are a few important reasons why it is even more important to exercise during the winter season.

Avoid weight gain

Temptation to eat more during the colder months is quite common. Images of red wine, hot chocolate, cheese etc. make it little harder to resist and the only way to make up for that is to increase the amount of daily exercise.

Prevent SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder)

In order to avoid serious Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD), daily workout helps ease depression as it releases de-stress brain chemicals. After at least 10 minutes of exercise, the brain releases 'feel good' chemicals which help to reduce anxiety and depression. Jogging helps release powerful hormones that helps in increasing positive mood states.

Stay healthy

Cold temperature in winter can lead to thickening of blood due to severe weather conditions which puts an individual to higher risk of heart attacks. Hence, it becomes pertinent to tackle the winter onslaught by moving. At the same time, regular exercise strengthens the immune system which becomes particularly important during the winter when cold and chest infections are quite common.

Diet tip

Include raw foods such as fruits in your diet, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, and fresh herbs. Raw foods provide enzymes, vitamins, and disease protective antioxidants.

Blow hot, blow cold

When the weather gets cold the body gets stiff. It makes quite a difference how to get the warm-up and cool-down session during the cold weather.

Warm Up: Always warm up for at least 7 to 10 minutes before start. The stiffer one feels the longer should be the warm-up session. Good option is to walk at a brisk pace, or jog in order to warm the muscles. Cool down: It is as important as the warm- up session. Cooling down will balance the positive and negative effects of the training. Stretching comes into play during this time as the most comfortable time to stretch is after activity.

Master Chef
In thick soup!
Manju Dewan

Winter is knocking on our door and now is the season of yummy soups. It is also time to move beyond the typical tomato or chicken soup and experiment with other ingredients. For the upcoming chilly weather, mushroom soup is the most ideal. Since it is quick to cook, it retains the nutritive value more and is light on the stomach as well.

Ingredients:

  • 75 gm butter
  • 400 gm mushroom (chopped)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 200 gm milk
  • 4 slices white bread (sides chopped and crumbled)
  • 100 gm cream
  • 3 tsp parsley
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Method:

Melt butter in a pan, add mushroom and onion; saute till it softens and becomes pinkish in colour. Now add bread. Mix and leave it for 10 minutes. Now blend to make a paste and give it a boil. Add salt and pepper to taste. Just before serving, add cream. Serve hot.

Actor Milind Gunaji, who is currently seen in Ashutosh Gowariker's television show Everest, talks about his role and more.
Milind Gunaji
Milind Gunaji

Tell us about the show and your role…

The show is about a young girl who wants to prove herself by conquering Mount Everest. I play her guide and trainer, who takes her for this expedition with a few other mountaineers. It's a very pivotal role.

How has the experience of shooting for the show been?

I had a great experience shooting for the show. Since Ashutosh Gowariker believes in doing everything on a grand scale, it's a mega-serial. His television show has the same flavour and range that his films have.

Was it difficult playing a mountaineer?

No, I am a mountaineer by hobby and have done a lot of mountain climbing. We shot at impossible locations and it was quite thrilling.

Post Everest, will we see you more often on television?

If I get good offers and the character is substantial, then yes I will be more than willing to do television. TV offers such a huge fan base. You reach your viewers directly in their homes.

You are also a photographer and a writer; how do you balance it all?

I think all my activities are complementary to each other. When I go for film shoots in Maharashtra and sometimes around the world, we are on the best locations with people of different cultures. This inspires me to use my camera. My co-artists have also been great subjects. Then I write about my experiences. I have written 12 books till date and have had multiple editions printed. And from the responses I have been getting for my books, I know that I do have a knack for it.

Raveena’s andaz

Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon, who ruled hearts for over a decade, is now in a comfortable space in her career. As her cult film, Andaz Apna Apna completes 20 years, the actress cannot help but reminisce her days shooting for the comedy.

Raveena says, "We were all immature and had ego issues, so all four of us (Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena) wouldn't talk much. But some scenes were so funny that we would crack up and realise that the fun was beyond our trivial issues."

Talking about the prank she played on Aamir Khan, Raveena added, "I asked Saroj ji (choreographer) to give him a really difficult step, saying that I had already picked it up. He was zapped, but he practised and did it with proper expressions, even as the cameraman pretended to shoot. We laughed our hearts out."

Rana walks out

The cast of One Night Stand is in jeopardy. Originally supposed to star Rana Daggubatti and Sunny Leone, Rana is said to have walked out because he has got an ambitious project in the South film industry.

Dis-credit!

Director Abhishek Kapoor is having a row with writer Pubali Chaudhari for not giving him the credit for the script of the Rock On!! sequel.

In the party mood

Actress Sonal Chauhan loves to dance like crazy at house parties and sometimes, she enjoys a good mocktail. She likes to party with her stylist friend, Dev.

Chaar Sahibzaade is a must watch

Actres Shilpa Shetty, who watched Harry Baweja's Punjabi film Chaar Sahibzaade, took to Twitter to praise the film. She also asked her fans to watch it. "Just watched Chaar Sahibzaade was moved to tears by the sacrifice and courage of these true life heroes. Great animation and story telling."

32 years later

Actress Hema Malini, who last shared screen space with Shakti Kapoor in Satte Pe Satta, is shooting with him again after a gap of more than 32 years.

"Shooting with Shakti now after Satte Pe Satta. How time has flown! Very comfortable with everyone on the sets though it is after a long gap," she tweeted.

Change of direction

The Azharuddin biopic starring Emraan Hashmi will now be directed by Anthony Dsouza instead of Kunal Deshmukh. That's because D'Souza is close friends with Mohammed Azharuddin.

Good, bad and ugly
We take a look at what our leading ladies from the tinsel town wore recently...

Spot on
Kareena Kapoor Khan

Celebrities seem to have stopped colour-blocking and started going back to the 'all matching' trend-look closely at Kareena's nails here! As simple as this look is, it looks gorgeously glamorous on her, especially with the side-swept hair and statement watch adding a little class to what could have been a too-casual look.

Tacky show
Anindita Nayar

This dress needn't have such a high thigh slit. It would have looked so much more elegant as a flowing maxi. The slit makes it look tacky and overdone because of the busy print running through the rest of it. We love the belted waist, but the shoes could have been a little less white.

Wrong foot forward
Soha Ali Khan

Soha's hair looks gorgeous here and her dress fits her like a glove. We even like the little blue bolero she's rocking. We love that her accessories are minimal. But we really hate those shoes! They're a 'matchy-matchy' attempt gone wrong, and we hate that we can see the pink lining peeking through.

Poor combo
Tanisha Mukerji

Tanisha Mukerji’s dress is okay. The colour is gorgeous but the style is a little dumpy, especially when it's combined with the stiff black purse and stocky black pumps. We wish her hair was pulled back. That would have looked a lot better on this particular style.

Two much
Chitrangada Singh

We like this high-neck cut-out dress. We even like the silver spike-studded shoes. However, we hate the combination. Chitrangada should have stuck to either one, because both together look like she's trying way too hard to be fashionable. We love her layered blow-out though and her makeup is spot on.

Grand finale of Satyamev Jayate

It seems the Season 3 of Satyamev Jayate will end on a high note. Actress Parineeti Chopra along with Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut recently shot for the grand finale of Aamir Khan's talk show. 'Honoured to be on the satyamev jayate finale with Aamir, Deepika and Kangana. Dont miss it!!' Chopra tweeted. The final episode will air this Sunday.

Time up

Famous show Pyaar Ka Dard Hai has ended its run after two-and-a-half years and nearly 700 episodes. The show has been a smashing success with audiences around the world. The actors, namely Nakuul Mehta and Disha Parmar, will now take a break till the end of the year.

Reshammiya becomes mentor

This weekend, the party on India's Raw Star becomes bigger. Himesh Reshammiya will now be seen on the show as the musical mentor to the performers till the finale. The multi-talented director, singer and actor will be seen in place of Yo Yo Honey Singh, guiding the artists as they all head close to the final countdown which is just a few weeks away.

Zindagi marches along!

Zindagi has garnered a huge fan-following since the time of its launch. Their latest show Badi Aapa, starring Savera Nadeem and Noman Ijaz, is all set to premiere on November 7 at 8:55 pm. The show tells the story of a woman named Zubaida (Savera Nadeem) who possesses a rigid and dictatorial nature towards her family.
