Tribune News Service

Lalru, November 1
Wanted in a murder case in Bihar, a self-syled godman who had taken refuse in a temple in Khelan village, near here, was arrested by the local police on Friday night.

The accused, Mohan Das, a resident of Akbar Nagar in Bihar, was absconding after jumping bail and was residing with his uncle Hari Chand in a village temple near Lalru since 1995.

In an effort to hide his identity, Mohan changed his name to Baba Uma Singh, claimed Anil Sharma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dera Bassi.

The SP said Mohan Das alias Baba Uma Singh, was arrested by the Bihar Police for killing a resident of his area and a case under Section 302, IPC, was registered against him in Nawada district.

The accused managed to get bail from a Bihar court in 1995 and later absconded from there, said the SP.

Following which, his son Umesh Kumar, in an attempt to frame the complainants, lodged a case of abduction against Naresh Kumar and three others. The four were the complainants in the murder case against Mohan, he added.

The SP said Naresh and three others were convicted in a case of abduction. After spending three years in prison, Naresh filed a civil suit in a Bihar court apprehending that Mohan was alive and living with his uncle Hari Chand, who died a few years ago.

Following court orders, the police along with Naresh, the petitioner, raided the temple premises and arrested the accused, who was later identified as Mohan Das, he said.

He was later produced before a Dera Bassi court where the judge directed the police to shift him to Bihar and produce before the Nawada district court there, the SP added.

Two witnesses examined in cash-at-judge’s door case
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 1
In the resumed hearing of the cash-at-judge’s door case involving Justice Nirmal Yadav (retd), the prosecution examined two witnesses today.

Ashok Kumar, a stamp vendor at the Panchkula district courts, and Ramesh Chander, a friend of a co-accused Rajiv Gupta, were examined and cross-examined in the CBI court today.

The prosecution stated that Rajiv Gupta had purchased a stamp paper through Ramesh Chander from the stamp vendor Ashok Kumar. The stamp paper was then allegedly used by Rajiv Gupta to prepare a false agreement to sell a plot while establishing a false alibi before the police.

The case has now been adjourned to November 15 when five more prosecution witnesses had been summoned.

At the time of arrest, the accused had arranged a person by the name of Nirmal Singh who disclosed that the amount of Rs 15 lakh alleged to be bribe money was actually sent by the accused hotelier Ravinder Singh to Nirmal Singh as a part payment of the deal between Rajiv Gupta and Ravinder Singh for a plot in Sector 16, Panchkula. CBI investigations revealed that no document relating to the deal between Ravinder Singh and Rajiv Gupta existed and they conspired to prepare a false sale agreement to show it to the police. Later, when Sanjiv Bansal surrendered to the police, he disclosed for the first time that the money was meant for Justice Yadav towards a land deal in Solan. The stamp paper on which the false agreement was prepared was sold by Ashok Kumar and thus he was made a prosecution witness.

The case had hit the headlines in August 2008 when a bag containing Rs 15 lakh in cash was “wrongly delivered” at the residence of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, following which she reported the matter to the police. The money was allegedly delivered by Parkash Ram, a clerk of the then Haryana Additional Advocate General, Sanjiv Bansal. Investigations revealed that the money was sent by Delhi based hotelier Ravinder Singh for Justice Yadav through Bansal.

After Justice Nirmaljit Kaur reported the matter to the Chandigarh Police, an inquiry was instituted and it was alleged that the money was meant for Justice Yadav but was delivered to Kaur due to confusion over their names.

The CBI had on March 4, 2011, chargesheeted Justice Nirmal Yadav, who retired as Uttarakhand High Court Judge, less than two years after being transferred from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in November 2009. CBI stated in the chargesheet that Justice Yadav had ruled a judgment relating to a property dispute case in Bansal’s favour in March 2008 and was paid Rs 15 lakh for the same.

CBI files chargesheet against traffic cop
Tribune News service

Chandigarh, November 1
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed a chargesheet against a head constable of the UT traffic police in a corruption case.

Head constable Paramjeet Singh was arrested on September 9 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from an auto driver Narotam for not challaning his vehicle for violation of various traffic rules.

The CBI had received a complaint from the auto driver and laid a trap near the Sector-35 Kisan Bhawan roundabout. The accused was reportedly caught red-handed while taking the bribe money, which was wrapped in a white-coloured paper and recovered from him.

CBI officials said the cop had challaned the auto of Narotam, who is the complainant in the case.

As per the chargesheet, the auto driver got his vehicle released after paying Rs 4,000 as challan fee after he failed to pay the bribe of Rs 1,200 demanded by the traffic cop on September 2. His vehicle was challaned for various offences like not carrying document. Then, the head constable had challaned him for more offences as Narotam failed to pay the bribe the cop had sought.

On September 4, the head constable again spotted the complainant riding the auto-rickshaw. He demanded bribe again and threatened him to challan again if he failed to pay this time. Narotam then complained to the CBI following which a trap was laid.
