CBI court awards 3-year jail to PNB official in graft
case
Panchkula, October 31 The accused, Suresh Kumar Kataria, Assistant Manager, at Punjab National Bank, Charkhi Dadri Branch (Haryana) has not only been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years but a fine of Rs 20,000 has also been imposed. He has been convicted under section 7 and 13(2) read with 13(1) (d) of PC Act, 1988. A case was registered by CBI, Anti-Corruption Branch, Chandigarh, on March 26,2011 against Suresh Kumar Kataria, on the allegations of having demanded bribe from the complainant for sanctioning credit limit of Rs 60 lakh. Subsequently, CBI laid a trap and Kataria was caught red handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 30,000 from the complainant in lieu of sanctioning the credit limit. After completion of investigation, charge sheet was filed in the Court of Special Judge, CBI, Panchkula. |

UT top brass appears before HC
Chandigarh, October 31 As the case came up for hearing, the UT Deputy Commissioner, the Home Secretary and the Municipal Commissioner appeared before the Bench. The Deputy Commissioner told the court that his mother’s health prevented him from putting in an appearance before the court on the previous date of hearing. He also assured the court of filing an affidavit in future. Accepting his plea, the High Court asked the authorities concerned, including the Home Secretary, the Municipal Commissioner and the Chairman of the State Agricultural Marketing Board, to put their heads together after convening a meeting. The directions came just over a month after the Chief Architect filed an affidavit stating that the revised layout of the second market had been approved and issued to the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Secretary, State Agricultural Marketing Board. Taking on record the assertion, the Bench had earlier asked the Deputy Commissioner to file a status report by way of an affidavit “furnishing details of the steps taken pursuant to the receipt of the revised layout plan”. The HC, on a previous date, had directed the Adviser to immediately convene a meeting for considering the feasibility of setting up another vegetable market in the city. The Bench had also directed the Chandigarh Administration and the chairman of the Market Committee to look into the mess in the Sector 26 grain market. The HC had then directed the UT Administration to respond to the photographs on encroachments and to make clear its stand on the new vegetable market in Sector 39. The UT, during the course of the hearing, had informed the Bench that a meeting was convened by the UT Advisor on April 26 last year to discuss the issues; and a decision on setting up a second grain, fruit and vegetable market in Sector 39 was taken. The UT Adviser, along with the Home Secretary and the Chief Architect, had visited the Sector 26 grain market and the proposed site in Sector 39. Appearing before the Bench, advocate-cum-amicus curiae Divya Sharma had insisted that the Sector 26 market was in bad shape. |

9,764 cases settled at lok adalats
Chandigarh, October 31 A total compensation of Rs 6,22,16,504 was disbursed in Motor Accident Claim Tribunal cases. A total of 613 civil suits, rent cases, Hindu Marriage Act cases, appeals, complaints, arbitration matters and domestic violence and criminal cases were also settled. A total of 9,097 traffic challans were cleared and Rs 25,72,645 was imposed and realised as fine. Youth sentenced to 10 years in jail for minor’s rape
Chandigarh, October 31 The court sentenced 25-year-old Anand under Section 376 (2) of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. According to the prosecution case, the incident occurred on August 8, 2013, when the victim reported to the women and child helpline number of the police that the accused, Anand, who was her neighbour, forcibly entered her house on finding her alone and raped her. The girl raised a hue and cry following which the accused told her that he would marry her. The police had then arrested the accused. The court convicted Anand on the basis of the victim's statements and she identified the accused in the court. She told the court that the accused had repeatedly raped her. The victim’s mother, in her statement before the court, had said that the victim was known to the accused and they were scheduled to get married. The "roka" ceremony had also been performed. Rs 50,000 fine imposed The court sentenced 25-year-old Anand under Section 376 (2) of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Youth gets 1-yr jail for molesting minor
Chandigarh, October 31 The court sentenced Manoj Kumar, a resident of Badheri, to one year in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000 on him. He has been convicted under Sections 354 A and 506 of the IPC and Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The incident took place on July 5 this year when a 16-year-old girl complained to the police that the accused used to tease her. On the day of incident, he pulled her to make her sit on his bike and molested her. He also threatened her of dire consequences. Claiming that he has been framed in the case as he did not know the girl and that she tried to blackmail him, Manoj Kumar pleaded innocence before the court. He stated that he was a budding cricket player and the girl had ruined his career. — TNS |

Drug addict snatches purse, caught after chase
Chandigarh, October 31 According to the police, Nupur Nadda, a resident of Zirakpur, and her daughter was in her Honda City car at Hallomajra light point when a person who was on foot opened the car’s door and ran with Nupur’s purse. The duo was on their way to Zirakpur when the incident took place. Nupur raised alarm following which people chased the accused and nabbed him. Police official said that the accused has been identified as Mohan Kumar, who is a drug addict. The purse contained cash, important documents and cell phone of Nupur. |

Chandigarh, October 31 Rulda Singh stated that a person, identified as Mandeep, alias Gifty, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, entered into a scuffle and manhandled him. Panchkula man held for extortion bid
Chandigarh, October 31 The police arrested Jasvir Singh Maan (45), alias Jassi, a resident of Yuvraj Apartments, Sector 24, Panchkula, who sent extortion letters to leading clothing and shoe merchants in Sector 17, Chandigarh. UT DIG AS Cheema said the accused sent the letters through courier from Amritsar and asked the businessman to give Rs 31 lakh each to his ‘Sewadar’, who will visit them between September 21 and 23. However, nobody turned up. A few days later, the accused sent a letter a similar letter to two shoe merchants in Sector 17. This time, he demanded Rs 51 lakh from each of them. The accused asked them to give the money to a BKI Sewadar at Hotel Himmani, District Solan (HP). The DIG said the police laid a trap and apprehended one Ranjit Singh, a resident of Solan who arrived at the hotel’s reception and asked for the shoe merchant claiming that he was sent by ‘Jathedar’. “Ranjit’s interrogation revealed that he was a taxi driver and a man, who identified himself as Jathedar, called him up and told him to collect bags from Hotel Himmani and drop them at Hotel Paragaon in Solan,” the DIG added. The police then asked Ranjit to inform the accused that he had received the bags. Meanwhile, Ranjit got a call from the accused, who now asked him to wait at Hotel Paragaon till the time the director of a company whom he (Ranjit) has to take to Chandigarh reaches there. Later, two persons arrived at the hotel and approached Ranjit Singh. The police apprehended them and on questioning learnt that they had come there for an interview for the post of field officer. The duo was asked to approach the taxi driver by the accused. “The accused had told them that the director of the company, who was supposed to take the interview, was stuck somewhere, following which he sent a taxi to ferry them to Chandigarh for interview,” the police official said. The accused then again called the taxi driver to bring the bags to Sector 11, Panchkula, where the company’s director will arrive to collect them and pay the fare. On reaching Panchkula, a man in Innova car approached Ranjit and asked for bags. The police apprehended the man, identified as Gurcharan Singh, and found that he was another taxi driver who was sent to collect the bag. Gurcharan revealed that his taxi was hired from Sector 20, Panchkula, and the customer got down on the way at a sweets shop. The accused had given Gurcharan the number of other taxi and told him to bring the bags. Gurcharan was asked to locate the accused, but he failed to do so. The police said the accused was traced with the help of mobile numbers used by him and was arrested from Sector 24, Panchkula. The accused was produced in a court and has been sent to four-day police remand.

Man booked for taking loans against stolen jewellery
Chandigarh, October 31 According to the police, Parveen Kumar Bajaj, branch manager, Muthoot Finance Ltd, Sector 46, Chandigarh, alleged that Kishan cheated the company by taking a loan of Rs 2.3 lakh against stolen jewellery. The police said the accused had taken two different loans of Rs 1.31 lakh and Rs 99,000 against the gold jewellery on March 3 this year. Sources said a few days later, the Chandigarh Police approached the finance company stating that the gold jewellery against which one of the loan was raised, was stolen and a case in this regard was registered at the Industrial Area police station on October 19, 2013. Later, a team of Panchkula police also approached the finance company and claimed that the jewellery furnished by the accused for another loan was also stolen and a case in this regard was registered at the Sector 5 police station in Panchkula on February 18, 2014. The jewellery was seized by the police. The finance company then lodged a complaint against the accused with the Chandigarh Police, following which a case of cheating has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. Gold chain snatched
Two motorcycle-borne robbers snatched the gold chain of a woman near RIMT School, Mani Majra. The police said Kanchan Jaiswal, a resident of Shanti Nagar, Mani Majra, alleged that unidentified bike-borne men fled after snatching the chain. The complainant failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station. |

Man looted
A resident of colony No 4 was allegedly robbed of Rs 10,000 in cash. The police said Amit Mishra alleged that Sunil, Raj Kumar, alias Bidla Kamipa, and Ashish attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon near the Ration Depot, Azad Printing Press, in Colony No 4 and forcibly took away Rs 10,000. The complainant was admitted to the GMCH-32. A case against the trio has been registered at the Industrial Area police station and Sunil, one of the accused, has been arrested. The police said raids were on to nab the remaining two accused persons.
ATM fraud
Mona, a resident of the Bank Colony, Mani Majra, alleged that an unidentified person withdrew Rs 72,000 from her account by using her ATM card at an ATM kiosk in Mani Majra. The accused offered help as the complainant faced a problem in withdrawing money. Later, she found that the cash was withdrawn from her account. Shashikant, Rahat clinch titles
Chandigarh, October 31 Shashikant won the first set comfortably 6-2 and was up in the second set 4-1. But Bhupender fought back and won 5 games in a row to make it 6-4 and take the set. In the final set Bhupender was 2-0 up, Shashikant got back to his rhythm and variation, ground strokes and strong net game as his winning strategy to take the lead to 5-3. Shashikant was serving for match when Bhupender came back to level the set at 5-5. In the 11th game Shashikant broke Bhupender’s serve to lead 6-5. In the final game of the third set, Shashikant played outstandingly to close the match 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. In the girls’ singles, CLTA trainee Rahat Mangat defeated Shrity Dheer in straight sets. Rahat dominated throughout the match and conceded only two games. Rahat won 6-1, 6-1. |

Chandigarh, October 31 The event is being organised by PML SD Public School. On the opening day K.K. Sharma, Chairman-cum-Manager of the school was the chief guest on the occasion. The meet commenced with the warm welcome of the chief guest by the school principal Monica Sharma followed by a march past and oath ceremony by the participants. A vibrant cultural show was also performed. More than 60 teams and around 1,000 participants from Northern region are participating in the meet. The four-day mega event will conclude on November 3. |

Chandigarh, October 31 In the match played at St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45 B, Chandigarh, Strawberry Field won the toss and elected to field first. Batting first St. Xavier’s School scored 120 runs in 23.5 overs. The main contribution came from the bat of Dhruv who scored 25 runs, followed by Tushar (18 runs) and Jashan (12 runs). While bowling a good spell Harshdeep took 5 wickets for 19 runs and Sidharth 2 for 20. While chasing a small total, Strawberry Field bundled out on 96 runs in 23 overs. The only run contributions came from Anhad who scored 31 and Jayant scoring 13 runs. Double delight for Tanurag Gautam
Chandigarh, October 31 In the first frame, both the players were looking in good flow, suddenly Tanurag got the chance and won the first frame by 45-14, another frame was a close encounter between both the players, but Tanurag potted a straight long blue shot to take the frame in his own hand by a score 55-32. In junior billiards final, Tanurag Gautam beat Ranveer Duggal in two straight sets. In the first frame Ranveer was leading at the initial point but Tanurag with his good potting and canons able to steal the frame 60-43, but in second frame Tanurag showed his skills in the terms of potting and canons, which led to the winning of that frame by 60-33 and match 2-0. Chandigarh bag twin titles in baseball tournament
Chandigarh, October 31 KK Bhadoo, DPI, (Schools) was the chief guest at the occasion. Students from 12 states along with police band presented a jumbled march past, as a symbol of friendship and sportsmanship. Bhadoo congratulated all the teams and the winners. He encouraged them to enter the global arena of sports. Cash prizes and medals were given away to the winning teams. A vote of thanks was also proposed by chief guest. A cultural programme was the highlight of the closing ceremony. The games were declared closed by chief guest who presented the SGFI flag to the observer Prashant Trivedi. A colourful kite symbolic of farewell was released by the chief guest and the Chandigarh team. The closing ceremony culminated with the retreat and national anthem. |
