Missing the Diwali warmth
Excitement and fanfare is only gaining momentum; friends and family members are zeroing in on places to shop, gifts to buy and contemplating on makeovers at various ends, changing the look of the house, of the wardrobe, of the cutlery and much more. While everyone is warming up to Diwali festivities, more than a dozen Punjabi singer-actors are running back-to-back for their live shows abroad, and can't possibly make it home for Diwali. This essentially means missing out on the entire hullabaloo, more than that, it means being away from home on the festival. Even though they would be doing their bit to cheer up their spirits, it would still feel lonely, wouldn't it? Absent, sir! If you didn't know already, here's a little piece of information for you - for many Punjabi singers, this is known as the 'season for live shows', which makes them travel abroad, especially Canada, Australia and the UK. This time, with Diwali coming in a bit early, it also means being absent from celebrations back home. Punjabi singer-actor Roshan Prince, along with Jassi Gill, Babbal Rai and Prabh Gill, are on a US tour of Heart Hackers. Jassi Gill recently released another single, Bapu Zimidar, which is receiving great reviews. Nevertheless, Jassi is not that ecstatic. "I am missing my family back in Punjab. The fact that I wouldn't be with them on Diwali dampens my spirits," he says. Jassi along with the other singers, however, is still looking forward to Diwali celebrations by the Indian community in the US. "There are many Punjabis here, which means we wouldn't miss out on the fanfare bit, but there is nothing like celebrating Diwali in India in Indian style with all that shor sharaaba," he adds. Even when these singer-actors try to adjust their dates as per certain important festivals, sometimes these shows are just inevitable. Singer-actor Roshan Prince, for instance, will only be returning after Diwali. Roshan is pretty close to his entire family and makes it a point to be with them during all festivals. "I can't tell you how much my family would miss me and the same goes for me. I would be away from all the excitement of Diwali preparations — the mithai my mother prepares, relatives catching up and exchanging gifts," he shares, on a sad note. Roshan hasn't made for any plans for Diwali, though: "I could be celebrating Diwali the Las Vegas style if there is any such Diwali!" he laughs, as he is hopeful that the Punjabi community in LA will leave no stone unturned to enjoy the festival. "Some Indian shops and stores are already selling Diwali mithai and other stuff. I can see a lot of Indian style lighting in these malls now." So far no good While there are some who will try to make do with whatever is in the Diwali offing abroad, some feel there is no way any country can even come close to celebrating Diwali like North India. Actor Aman Dhaliwal will be in California and celebrating the festival with the Indian community there. "The Indians here dress in a traditional style; they try everything possible to replicate the Indian spirit of the festival, despite this, they can't. Nonetheless, they have their own way of celebrating, which is pollution-free. A fire cracker show is always a treat to watch on the eve of Diwali," adds Aman. Others who can't make it home on Diwali are constantly asking friends and family members to keep them posted through pictures on Whatsapp. "I have asked my family to make a video of everything they would be doing on Diwali," adds singer Satinder Gill, who is currently touring Austria. This Diwali, there are many singer-actors who will also be abroad shooting for their projects. Actor-comedian Binnu Dhillon, Yuvraj Hans and Amrinder Gill will be shooting for their upcoming project in Malaysia. Singer actor Yuvraj Hans says, "Yes, this time, I will be celebrating Diwali in Malaysia, if there is a celebration. In the end, it is about work and as actor-singers we cannot say that we cannot work because it's Diwali," says Yuvraj, who is sure he would be missing his entire family,” he concludes. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

Money can buy love
Things that you want to buy, pleasures that you want to enjoy, people you want to impress, luxuries you want to roll in…money can do all this, or even more. The more could either be going to a notch higher on the extravagant category or putting the same money to some good use. Something that Aneel Murarka, entrepreneur and philanthropist visiting Chandigarh is doing.
You would expect him to holiday in some fancy place, but he is here, doing all the running around to finalise the venue and everything else related to the second edition of the IIAA, International Indian Achiever's Awards. After the heart-touching first edition where celebrities from Bollywood to people who have done exemplary work in various fields came together, Aneel now wants to take this endeavour a step higher. Coming from Jaipur, Aneel Murarka is now based in Mumbai and is a successful industrialist and co-founder of Poetic Justice. This is probably where you can connect the businessman and the creative thinker. He smiles benevolently, "Well, much can be said about money, I would say, if only money could buy everything. The IIAA is an initiative to touch the hearts of people, a journey which has been initiated to recognise those who have worked hard in all circumstances to achieve something in life." You think it comes easy for a businessman? Aneel puts it on a light note, "One, for sure I wouldn't be getting any sponsors for the event and two, I am paying for everything through my nose," he laughs. As for the arrangements for the second part, this businessman philanthropist has come up with new additions, "We will have more categories this time. Secondly, a jury will have the right to select or reject the nominees and later it will be the masses, who will be choosing the winner. After all, the winner is one of them. Also, it is important to recognise people who stay out of India and have done so much in their field, honestly, we don't even know about such people. After all they have made India proud, so they must be honoured," adds Aneel who feels the only motivation that keeps him going is the need to touch lives of others in a special way. "I am in no respect drawing comparisons, but if the Prime Minister of our country who started with such humble beginnings can change the face of the country, I am only a small part, trying to do my bit to do something that can warm up the hearts of people."

One for change
Often, when a problem affects many, it transforms into an issue, and though many have advocated for the best way of solving an issue is to discuss, there are others, who dwell on taking actions. We for We, a non-government organisation (NGO) that is popular among the people of various countries, believes in ideating and finding a solution to a problem; and that too from the grass-root level. As a part of its global campaign for women empowerment in India, the organisation makes a stop in Chandigarh after visiting Amritsar, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Ahemdabad, Delhi, and Ludhiana. With volunteers like Tati Torres (Miss heritage World Ecuador), Diana Irina (Miss Bikini International), Jennifer Shell De Herrera (Miss Tourism of The Millennium), Alexandra Urcan (Marketing Expert), Carmin Martinez (Miss European Union) and Kevin Casha (Renowned photographer), the chairperson, Ripandeep Kaur, talks about the concerns of the organisation.
"Women, across the globe have been suffering discrimination and with the women empowerment programme, we aim to educate the general masses about gender equality," says Ripandeep Kaur. After having returned from Delhi, where the volunteers visited several sewing centres and distributed sewing machines, they share that the mentality of people will have to change on the grass-root level. "We are specifically focusing on health as most of the women living in the rural areas do not know about the symptoms of cervical and breast cancer. So, we take along with ourselves a team of doctors, including Dr. Kumud Pashricha and Dr Dimple, who treat women suffering from any problem," says Ripandeep. Meanwhile, Jennifer Shell affirms that the suggestions that people in India will give about the campaign shall be forwarded to the UN and some steps shall definitely be taken. She adds, "I think apart from women, it's important that men are also made to adopt a mentality that takes to gender equality. The problem of inequality exists everywhere and there is an urgent need to find a solution." The volunteers will be going to Goa and Bhopal post Chandigarh. amarjot@tribunemail.com

Stirring with strings
Santoor happened early on. Early enough to be called a part of the subconscious. So much so that Abhay Rustum Sopori doesn't remember first picking up the instrument; he only recalls first playing it. "My earliest memory is of me sitting in my father's lap and playing the instrument. I must have been between three or four or probably even younger. That's all I remember, apart from the fact that I have played it ever since," shares Abhay, while in Chandigarh for Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan 2014.
Music has only been as expected as inevitable for someone who traces his lineage to seven generations of santoor players, including father Bhajan Sopori, the Padma Shri and poster boy of santoor. "There are two things I absolutely love about this instrument; first being that technically it is one of the richest sounds; the only other being of the bells. Secondly, I feel very connected to the rhythm of santoor," shares the artist from Sufiana gharana of Indian classical music. Heavy history In an era dominated by all things Western and most things percussion, his love for the instrument goes deeper than concerts and SPICMACAY. "I am doing research on the history of santoor and also on the impact of music therapy on human body. I even collaborated with an American scientist for the same. Unfortunately, I am not being able to devote as much of time to the studies as it requires." There's a harmless jibe at the commercial CDs available in the market in the name of music therapy. "I bought a couple of them out of curiosity; let alone being treated, one might just fall sick after listening to such music," laughs the 35-year-old, hailing from Kashmir. The apathy to classical Indian music doesn't just stay restricted to the ancient stringed instrument in question. Most of the traditional genres and instruments stay limited to a dedicated few. Very few. He opines, "There's a lot that needs to be done to cultivate appreciation for our ancient music. Starting with the state and moving onto parents. In Vienna, they have statues of musicians and composers on the streets. It is all about how much of importance a society attaches to its art and culture." While creating a receptive environment might be one of the fundamental requirements, it is also one of the most difficult. Nevertheless, he is doing his bit. Coming up are a couple of projects already underway. "There will be lots of collaborations happening." As of now, during sound check, he is all set to play, "melodious traditional raga, followed by a few compositions accompanied with the sound of tabla," he signs off. manpriya@tribunemail.com

A peek into India's Sherlock Holmes
Dibakar Banerjee is having a good laugh at the rumours doing the rounds about his upcoming next film, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy starring Sushant Singh
Rajput. Recent reports stated how Dibakar's film, DBB is inspired by the international character of Sherlock Holmes and how they have similarities.
However Byomkesh Bakshy is the biggest and the most famous detective character of India. There is a series on the character but this is the first time a movie will be made on him. There are a lot of interesting elements about Byomkesh Bakshy that can be showcased through Dibakar's film. So, there was no need for them to take inspiration from Sherlock Holmes. When contacted Dibakar he laughed at the rumours doing the rounds and added, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is an answer to Sherlock Holmes, not Sherlock Holmes. Byomkesh Bakshy remains the first and the most famous detective in India wholly and solely Indian at heart, actions, methods, setting and style. This is the first time that Byomkesh will be on the big screen for all of India and the world! Why ignore the real Byomkesh stories — some of the most striking and original in the world —and borrow from an English franchise with no desi connect? Byomkesh Bakshy is an original and desi jawab to Sherlock Holmes in desi bhasha. He is completely original, secure and Indian from his dhoti to the Calcutta tram ticket in his kurta pocket that is a clue to a mystery!"

Stitch in time
It seems actress Nisha Nagpal has caught herself in the wrong. Nisha, who was on a contract with Sahara One's Masakali show, recently bagged a role in Star Plus’ Ek Veer Ki Ardaas: Veera. However, she didn't keep the Masakali team in the loop and went on to sign the show.
Later, she decided to quit the show via mail. So, the creative team decided to ask CINTAA for help and because they intervened she has now been replaced by another actress, Priyamvada Kant. Priyamvada will be playing a Punjabi character called Simran. She's a Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge fan and it's a fun character.
