Bipin Bhardwaj
Tribune News Service

Kalka, October 19
Tagged as a ‘paratrooper’ candidate, Latika Sharma, a BJP candidate, not only managed to encash the ‘Modi wave’ but star campaigners, including Union External Affair Minister Shushma Swaraj and cine star Vinod Khanna, MP Gurdaspur, Punjab, also changed the ‘wave’ in her favour.

The BJP was also benefited with the HJC-HJCP fielding Shakti Rani Sharma, wife of Venod Kumar, as a candidate from Kalka, as she could manage to grab considerable votes of INLD. Here the loss of INLD proved gain for the BJP.

The Congress candidate, Manvir Kaur Gill, suffered a major setback with a son of former minister Lachhman Singh, Bhagat Singh joining the INLD. A local Congress leader, Sudesh Sharma, who contested independently and got 2,435 votes also caused a dent in the Congress.

Satvinder Singh Rana, a senior Congress leader, was fielded by the BJP after the Congress denied him ticket, proved costly for the party. Rana got 9,817 votes and remained fourth in the contest. Rana enjoyed the support of his supporters both from the Congress and the BSP.

In net shell, the HJC-HJCP candidate Shakti Rani Sharma changed the political equations of the constituency and emerged fifth by getting 7,661 voters in just 25 days of the elections.

Her supporters hold roadshow to celebrate win

They took out a road show from the counting centre to celebrate the victory amid beating of drums and slogans in favour of the party and the candidate.
