Unfortunately, we still got plenty of cracker enthusiasts. For those who like it loud, there are cracker celebrations a day before at the Chandigarh Club. Open spaces and huge lawns are where the festive spirit can be exhibited at its best. To top things up, there's a game of tambola too.

Visitors admire lamp-shades at a stall
check out: Visitors admire lamp-shades at a stall

What is it about this exhibition that you don't mind going through never-ending traffic snarls and bumpy roads, only to shop under the scorching sun? Once that classical English music starts humming in your ears as you make your way through each stall, you know well enough - it's the exclusivity that beckons the heart, and the pocket.

On for the weekend, the Vanity Fair at Whispering Willows, Zirakpur, has enough to offer the shopaholic and the exotic wanderer. Starting off with prêt and couture wear, you have Jaipuri print fusion cotton kurtis by Ragini Shingai from Gurgaon (Rs 1,500 onwards), suits and dupattas in velvet by Plumtin by Sammy Gurm Buwal, Mohali (Rs 15,000 onwards), Indo-Western contemporary apparel at Pehchan by Anju Khanna, Delhi, fusion of modern and traditional embroideries at Vamangini, Delhi, et al. Of the apparels we found interesting were graphic print cut-sleeve jackets by Shor Sharaba, Mumbai, available at Rs 1,850 each and phulkari cut-sleeve jackets by India House, available at Rs 2,000 each.

As for jewellery, at the entrance check out the stall for Club Class Jewellery, which features fusion designs of Indian gods and goddesses with silver and gold leaf, chunky neckpieces. Their price range falls between Rs 500 and Rs 50,000. Another interesting pick is Lavanya's tribal silver jewellery, which starts at Rs 2,000 and goes up to Rs 17,000. The most interesting stall of jewellery, however, remains Bangdar Sarali, which has brought to the city the European concept of fused glass jewellery. Here you will find everything from whacky earrings to maang tikkas between the price range of Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000. And for those who have time to spare, the stone-strap watches at Paprika, Delhi, are worth a recce (Rs 1,500 onwards). A quirky addition to the jewellery bouquet of Vanity Fair is the brass jewellery by Malleka Singh, Delhi. Here, you'd find the brass chain shrug you've been lusting after. Malleka's designs range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 13,000.

To top up that look with the perfect pair of shoes, check out Heels & Buckles, which features leather shoes for men and women from Spain and Singapore, with the price ranging between Rs Rs 8,000 and Rs 25,000. And if lighter on the pocket is your preference, Studio Parsh (Delhi) has gold and neon colour chappals in the price range of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,800.

Another interesting find towards the end of the wooden furniture section was Pimp Your Wall, with youngster Nihal Kalra tempting you with custom-made printed posters for your walls. If you're a Breaking Bad or Batman or Beatles or Doors fan, this is your jam!

TRENDSETTER
Cool & suave
Poonam Bindra

Our fashion style is now dictated to a large extent by Bollywood trends. It was not so earlier when the actors wore clothes that looked good only on the screen. Combined with brand-wear, everybody can make a fashion statement conveniently. We catch up with Karan Soni, a former model, who is currently the producer of the movie What the Jatt.

Your sense of style

One is stylish if one looks best in whatever one wears and it has an impact on the overall personality, which includes the physique also.

What is one thing you treasure in your belongings?

A shirt in blue colour from Wills Lifestyle

Your style icon…

Hrithik Roshan

The worst dressed celebrity?

Salman Khan.

Brand freak or street pick-up?

Only brands.

Sporty, chic or glamorous?

Glamorous.

Your take on accessories…

I have a good collection of shades and don't like to wear a watch.

What is one fashion trend you would not like to follow?

Any funky fashion.

If given a choice, you would choose which designer?

Manish Malhotra.

When do you feel very confident of yourself?

My two high points of confidence are after I am done with my prayers and after I have worked out in the gym. Of course dressing to the T always adds to the confidence quotient.

A wife’s confessions
Twinkle Khanna on Karva Chauth

Twinkle Khanna, in her trademark style, shares her humourous thoughts on the custom of Karva Chauth which she has to follow every year.

5 am: If there is a God, he hates me. I can't think of any other reason why I am stumbling around the house at this unearthly hour normally reserved for owls, bats and the man of the house.

5.30 am: My mother-in-law has sent me a big basket of fruits and sweets which I must eat before sunrise so that I can starve the entire day thereby triggering a mystical spell (known only to Indians and NRI fans of Karan Johar movies) that will enable her beloved son to live a long life. I have tried to protest that the newspaper states sunrise is at 6.31 am, so I could technically wake up at 6.15 and gulp some food before the crucial moment that the above mentioned spell loses power, but to no avail. When I further point out that the pet tortoise in our garden is definitely going to outlive all of us and I don't see anyone fasting for him, I get a withering look from her and a sharp nudge in the ribs from the man of the house.

10 am: I gulp my saliva since that is the only liquid I am allowed to consume and call a fellow member of the Karva Chauth Torture Club who goes on to tell me how lucky I am because she has to follow stricter rules than me. She is not allowed to wash her hair on Karva Chauth. She chuckles that even if a crow shits on her head today, she will still have to walk around with it because all her mother-in-law will tell her is that it is inauspicious to wet her hair today, but will not find it inauspicious to have a daughter-in-law who smells of crap.

11 am: I need water...

1 pm: I need coffee...

3 pm: I need water, coffee and a large Scotch on the rocks...

4 pm: I know that all our Indian customs are based on scientific research by ancient minds where they spent decades examining and experimenting before they came up with our specific rituals to ensure our well-being; so I do my own scientific research (which takes me little less than 5 minutes, via Google) and the results are unmistakable. The United Nations research states that men with the longest life expectancy are from Japan, followed by Switzerland. I am rather surprised at this result as we have been doing the Karva Chauth fast to make sure our men have long lives since time immemorial and the results should have definitely shown by now.

I scan the list, confident that in this chart of life expectancy, the Indian man must definitely be in the top five. Nope! There are 146 countries above us where the men have longer life spans and the biggest blow is that even with four wives who don't fast for them, the Arab men outlive our good old Indian dudes.

6 pm: We Indians are a strange race where we are sending MOM to Mars but listening to Mom-in-law and looking for the moon. One of the better qualities we possess is that most of us will follow traditions and rituals as long as they do not demean or harm us, or cause us to do the same to another and makes our elders happy. We simply do it rather than prove a point as to how liberated and independent we truly are. Perhaps this is how we harmoniously hold our large families together as we celebrate different aspects of our lives.

9 pm: Dressed in our finery we gather on a friend's terrace to look for the moon. As banal as I find most rituals, I am still swept away in the moment. A dark night, five good friends, sparkling with our bindis, zardozi and red outfits. We are giggling and taking pictures. Suddenly someone spots the hazy orange outline of the moon and we are now dragging our men, laughing as we borrow things from each other's plates--a strainer, a coconut barfi, a flower--laughing, as we borrow things from our past...

A promising first look

Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar in Do
Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar in Do

Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar have been shooting in Delhi for their upcoming Bejoy Nambiar film—Do.

Big B took to the social networking platform to share the first look from the film which looks extremely striking and creates quite an impact! The first look which has sepia hues is taken at the backdrop of the famous Hauz Khas Quila in Delhi. In the image, we see Amitabh and Farhan engaging in a conversation over a chess game!

The film, which also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, will have Big B playing the role of a wheelchair bound chess master whereas Farhan Akhtar will essay the role of an ATS officer. Vidhu Vinod Chopra is producing the film and the first look of the film gives a hint of the director's cinematic brilliance.

I hate producing films: Abhishek

Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who tasted success as a producer with the National Award winning film Paa, says he's not a huge fan of producing movies. However, he's okay with the job as long as he isn't acting in the project as well.

"I hate producing films. It's just that I got lucky (with Paa). But I hate it,"

Abhishek, who played a reel father to his real father Amitabh Bachchan in the 2009 movie, said.

"During Paa, I had a very difficult time because the producer in me came in the way of the actor in me. I would be more comfortable in producing a film without me acting in it. If I have to produce a film in which I am acting, that would need a lot of preparation and organisation from my part," he added.

Abhishek's next as a producer is "Shamitabh", which again stars his megastar father.

"Shamitabh is more enjoyable because I am just the producer in that. Production is a very difficult job and it's a very thankless job," said the 38-year-old.

Being directed by R. Balakrishnan aka R. Balki, the movie also stars Dhanush and Akshara Haasan.

Paa was also directed by R. Balki, and Abhishek says the doors of his home production AB Corp will always remain open for the acclaimed filmmaker.

"He means a lot to me as a director, and helped me restart my production house with Paa. He made me into a producer by making Paa," he said.

Production apart, Abhishek is all excited about his big screen appearance in Farah Khan's Happy New Year, which releases October 24 — just a day after Diwali. — IANS

Getting intimate with Heidi

Model Heidi Klum is going to launch her new brand of lingerie in January 2015.

Klum has worked as a Victoria's Secret model for 13 years, and she wonders how far the world of lingerie has come over the years.

"It's almost like with the iPhone, how they always come up with something new and there's always a new technology. It's the same thing with bras too, there's always something new...the underwire and the padding has changed, and things are seamless," said the mother of four. — IANS

Happy team

Farah Khan's multi-starrer directorial Happy New Year has been passed with a 'U' certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film releases October 24.

The team of the film, produced by Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd, is excited with the news that will make it possible for audiences of all age groups to watch it at theaters.

"We, at Red Chillies Entertainments, have always believed in making a film which can be enjoyed by one and all. And with 'U' certificate attached to the film, it is only going to enhance the potential and appeal right from the kids to youngsters to adults," SRK said in a statement.

"From the day Farah and I decided to make Happy New Year, we wanted it to be a wholesome family entertainer. Now with the Censor's 'U'certificate on it, we can proudly say that this Diwali go out with your family and watch the film because as the title, the film is a happy one," he said. Apart from Shah Rukh, the film stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah.

Farah, who has ensured that the movie has a lot of dance and music, says she has "always believed in making an entertaining film to be enjoyed by not just one section or age-group but everyone". — IANS

Deepika’s homecoming

After starting her career with Farah-Shah Rukh Khan's joint production Om Shanti Om seven years ago, actress Deepika Padukone feels her upcoming project Happy New Year is like a homecoming.

Happy New Year, releasing this Diwali, is again co-produced by Farah and Shah Rukh and the actor will be seen romancing Deepika in it.

"Happy New Year is a homecoming for me. The way they (Shah Rukh and Farah) made me feel has brought back the memories of Om Shanti Om. Even the way she calls me Baby and I call her Maa.

"Farah takes certain liberties with me and so do I with her. The way we talk to each other is special. In fact, a lot of the time we would sit together and remember old times. They are family," Deepika said in a group interview.

The film is directed by Farah and has ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Viaan Shah apart from Shah Rukh and Deepika.

Deepika says she feels her career is safe in the hands of the choreographer-filmmaker and SRK.

"They gave me such a beautiful launch in the industry and presented me so well. They took the responsibility and understood that this girl's career is in our hand," she said.

Kamal Haasan clears the air

With rumours of his injury circulating around the media, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan has decided to speak out and clear the air. The actor is currently in Kerala to shoot for the psychological thriller Papanasam. It is the Tamil remake of the super hit Malayalam film, Drishyam.

News broke out a few days ago that the actor has been admitted to a hospital with a nose injury in Kanyakumari. His nose was apparently bruised during a fight scene. Later he was discharged from the hospital.

But Hassan rubbished all such claims in a statement. He said, "Before various new ailments are endowed upon me, I hasten to clarify that all is well. It is not true that I was injured while shooting."

He also explained what actually happened on the sets. Kamal Haasan said, "It was a makeup rubber prosthetic that slipped into my nasal passage and had to be carefully removed under medical supervision. It was a stunt scene so I had simulated injuries on the face."

Richa’s foreign claim

Richa Chaddha has been bragging about doing foreign films but her next film is an Indo-British project which has been financed by an Indian-British national by the name of Michael Ward. It will be shot in Mumbai and will also star Akshay Oberoi.

He saw a tempo ram into a man on a cycle. Noticing that no one came to the man's rescue, Neil reversed his car and took the victim to a nearby hospital.

Vikram enters Doli Armaanon Ki

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work, and Vikram Chatterjee, the second runner-up of Cera India's Best Cine Star Ki Khoj will definitely vouch for it. A week after the finale of Zee TV's acting talent hunt show, Vikram Chatterjee has landed a role in the channel's popular fiction drama Doli Armaanon Ki. Vikram enters the show as Yash Singhania, a NRI lawyer from London.

Right in the act

Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, who is currently seen in TV show Humsafar on Zindagi, talks about the show, her role and more.

Humsafar was a huge hit and a career highlight for you. Is the show out of your system now?

Humsafar was my first show and it was an overnight success. It was life-altering for me. The character of Khirad is very close to my heart. The entire cast and crew are responsible for the success of the show. Humsafar changed the face of Pakistani television. Humsafar does live with me somewhere.

Tell us something about Humsafar…

Humsafar is the story of two people from a very different background and totally different worlds. Both of them have the same self-respect. They're both strangers who get married to each other. There is amazing love that brews between them. It is the story of how they separate and are united after several years.

Please tell us about your role.

I play the role of Khirad, who comes from a small town and is an independent girl. Her mother is unwell and there are always money constraints at home. Despite her circumstances, she has a very liberated thought process. The name Khirad means 'intelligence'. She is well-behaved, smart and most importantly she is a girl who has a lot of self-respect. To sum this up in a line, Khirad is the ultimate woman.

How difficult was it for you to play Khirad?

It wasn't all that difficult for me because a part of me is just like Khirad. She is a little shy and hesitant and so am I. But there were times when I didn't identify with her. For example Khirad is very submissive, while shooting certain scenes I wished if she could handle the situations differently.

When will we get to see you and Fawad again together on screen?

We wanted to work together after Humsafar, but unfortunately nothing materialised. Also, as actors we are both very choosy about the kind of work we do. We were offered a show together; Fawad did it and I did not. So maybe something great is in store for us!

Will we get to see you in Indian shows?

If something exciting comes my way, I would definitely do it without giving it a second thought.

If your birthday is October 19...

This birthday on the 19th gives greater will-power and self-confidence, and very often a rather original approach; but with this, a somewhat self-centered approach to life that may be in conflict with some of the other influences in your life. You are sensitive, but your feelings stay somewhat repressed. You have a compelling manner that can be dominating in many situations. You do not tend to follow convention or take advice very well. Consequently, you tend to learn through experience; sometimes hard experiences. Investments should be avoided. Moderate results have to be anticipated from finances. Health will remain fine. Watch your spending and do not splurge money.

Positive colours: Golden, Red.

Select days: Tuesday, Friday and Thursday.

Favourable numbers: 3, 6, 9.

Gems recommended: Red Coral, Yellow Sapphire.

Charity on birthday: Feed monkeys in a reserved area.

You share your birthday with well-built and good-looking Sunny Deol (Ajaysingh Dharmendra Deol, October 19, 1956), who debuted in the superhit film Betaab. Sunny's stars promise a big award in the film world.
