Kidnapped boy eludes captivity
Dera Bassi, October 18 Nitish Bisht, a Class VI student of Delhi Public School, Ambala, was abducted by the youth from the colony while he was on his way back to home after taking tuition at about 7.15 pm. After remaining captive for over an hour in dark and dingy room located in an isolated area in Saidpura village along the Dera-Bassi-Barwala road, the daring boy managed to elude the kidnapper by escaping from a window. After escaping, the boy managed to reach at a thread manufacturing industry and got onto a stationary mini truck. Interestingly, the boy was detained in a room almost 4 km away from the spot he was abducted from. Anil Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dera Bassi, however, ruled out the abduction claiming that the areas SHO had conducted an inquiry and found that the boy was concocting a story. While narrating the sequence of events, Nitish recalled that an unidentified person approached and asked to accompany him. “As I refused, he hit at my leg, muffled my mouth with a piece of cloth and bundled me into a red car, parked nearby. He then drove the vehicle through streets and took me to a house and pushed into a dark room. After locking the room from outside, the abductor left the place,” he recalled. “I also heard him making a phone call while leaving. While stepping ahead in dark, some cobwebs got stuck in my hands. As I tried to shred the sticky cobwebs, my right hand touched a window which proved a safe exit for me later,” the boy said. “While heading towards Dera Bassi, my uncle Yashodhar Prasad, approached me and took me to my home,” Nitish claimed. While talking to The Tribune, Yogendra Bisht, father of the victim, claimed that his wife raised an alarm when Nitish did not return from tuition at about 7.30 pm. Following this, residents of the colony launched a search. Accompanied by two police personnel, Saini and boy’s father conducted a search operation to identify the kidnapper and the place where he was captivated but to no avail. No case was registered in this regard as yet. |

1 quintal ganja seized, one arrested
Dera Bassi, October 18 Acting on a tip-off on the smuggling of the ganja, the police laid a trap on the highway and nabbed Sanjiv Kumar while he was transporting the contraband in an ambulance. Bhawna, both residents of Chandigarh Apartments, were crossing the highway when a car heading from Ambala side hit them. The woman died on the spot while her daughter was critically injured. A case has been registered. — TNS

Restoration of sacked employees Tribune News Service
Lalru, October 18 Led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, MP Patiala, Amrik Singh and Jasmer Singh Rana from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Kuljeet Singh Randhawa (Congress), Satish Sharma (BSP), Bant Singh Brar (CPI) and some others along with the protesting sacked employees of the unit raised slogans against the company management. The company manufacturing hepatitis B antigen, diphtheria vaccine, tetanus vaccine, H1N1 vaccine, haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine at Lalru has sacked 317 employees for raising their voice to seek their constitutional rights, claimed Dr Gandhi. He blamed the company management for violating the labour laws and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PCCB) norms with impunity apart from indulging in unfair practices. The protesters earlier organised a peaceful procession from Lalru market till the main gate of the industrial unit. In wake of the protest called by the MP on October 9, the district administration had deployed heavy police force at the venue. Apart from women police force from Mohali, riot control vehicles, fire tenders and other men and machinery were stationed at the site. The area superintendant of police, Anil Sharma, and naib tehsildar were present to bring the situation under control. Later, an 11-member delegation led by Dr Gandhi met the company management. The management assured Dr Gandhi to organise a meeting of the sacked employees with the company owners to find out a solution soon. Dr Gandhi however, claimed to launch an indefinite dharna in front of the company gate if the owners failed to resolve the problem amicably before November 1. He alleged that the company management has shown doors to the employees after 10 to 15 years of their services. |
A case of contract killing: Cops
Chandigarh, October 18 Chandigarh DIG AS Cheema said: “We are exploring all the angles in the case.” Reportedly, police sources said the friends of the live-in partner of the victim, Amit Chaudhary, were under scanner and being questioned. The police sources added that someone close to the family was suspected to be involved in the murder. Meanwhile, Amit, his sister and his wife were also questioned by the police at the Crime Branch of Chandigarh police today. The police are also not ruling the possibility that the accused were known to the deceased. Meanwhile, the police are also suspecting that the victim was pinned down and then shot as the blood of the deceased was not found anywhere in the room. The sources have disclosed that there was not even a single drop of blood anywhere in the room except from the place where Sandhu was found dead. The police have named Amit Chaudhary and his father Ram Lal into the FIR.
Earlier Connections
Before entering into a relationship with Amit, the victim, Puneet Sandhu, had been staying with a man from Patiala in the same flat, which was later shared by Amit. The police said the former friend of deceased had been arrested in a heinous crime case in Punjab and he recently came out on bail and started calling Puneet insisting that she end her relationship with Amit. The scrutiny of the call details record (CDR) of the deceased established the fact that she was in contact with her former friend and they had been talking to each other for 10 to 13 minutes for the last one month.
The case
The victim, Puneet Sandhu, was shot dead at her rented flat at the Punjab and Singh Bank Officers House Building Co-operative Society in Sector 49 on Thursday night. Three bullets were fired on the victim when she was reportedly alone in the house. |

1 killed as bike hits truck
Mohali, October 18 The motorcycle-borne youth hit a trailer truck near the Balongi sales tax barrier. It is learnt that the trailer truck, loaded with girders, was parked near the tax barrier on the National Highway 21. The youth was on his way to Mundi Kharar from Mohali when the accident took place. The injured youth was taken to the Civil Hospital in Phase VI and was later referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. The police have registered a case and have claimed to have arrested the driver. The trailer truck has also been impounded. |

Digvijay emerges victorious
Chandigarh, October 18 Digvijay achieved his maiden title against top seed Sidhant Banthia, who won the Wimbledon Tournament conducted by the LTA (Road to Wimbledon) recently. In the final, Digvijay was trailing by 0-3 in the first set. He, however, bounced back soon and performed brilliantly to bag the title. The player raised his level and dominated his opponent without conceding a game and won the set 6-3. In the second set, he thrashed his opponent 6-0. Earlier in the semifinals, Digvijay defeated Saurav Kalkal in straight sets 6-1 and 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Digvijay defeated second seed Parikshit Somani in three-hour long match 6-7 (3), 6-2 and 6-2. CLTA trainees leave for exposure trip to Madrid A four-member team from the CLTA have left for an exposure trip to Madrid (Spain) today. The team comprises of Ranjeet Singh, Vikrant Dahiya, Sumit Pal Singh and Digvijay Pratap Singh. The director of the Coaching and Development, Gajendra Singh, will also be accompanying the team for training and tournament play. This is the second trip of the CLTA trainees to Madrid, under the CLTA Madrid Tennis Foundation programme. Under this programme, players from the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association visit Spain once a year and a coach from the Madrid Tennis Foundation visits the CLTA for conducting a two to three weeks of coaching camp twice a year. |

Opening their team’s account, Dalbir scored the first goal in the seventh minute followed by a brace by Vikram in the 10th minute. Dalbir again guided the team to score the third goal with a solo effort in the 15th minute. After two minutes, Pawan scored the fourth goal to take tally to 4-0. Later, Gurkirat (27th minute) and Shiranjit (33rd minute) scored a brace each to close the winning tally 6-0. Chandigarh, October 18 The theme of the sports day was “Feeding the world- Caring for the Earth”. The chief guest on the occasion was Vivek Pratap Singh, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation. The highlights of the occasion were drills, races (100m and 200m) and 4x50m relay race. The winners were felicitated by the chief guest. The emphasis of the meet was laid on the participation rather than perfection.
