A sport, a tradition
This one proposes a long due toast to kabaddi! Badlapur Boys hopes to cash-in on the Bollywood's current sports season and do what Bhaag Milkha Bhaag did to biopics and Mary Kom to boxing. Isn't it high time we moved all the cameras to a kabaddi field?
"Though kabaddi is the highlight of the film and everything happens against the backdrop of the sport, it is as much a film about human emotions and drama," shares Shailesh Verma, who debuts as a director with the film, while in Chandigarh for a promotion. The long due audio-visual dedication to the sport, however, does not come out of the blue. Rather it has been long overdue. "Kabaddi, as a sport, is deeply rooted in India's tradition and culture. It is one of the ancient sports and so many other sports like wrestling came out of it. This is probably one of the first films on kabaddi." In the unleveled playing field, wherein the underdogs take on the mighty, emotions take as much of centrestage. Emotions like revenge, love, sacrifice…"There is also a very clear message that we have tried to depict. One only needs grit to turn dreams into reality; having said that, we have also tried to depict real-life situations and problems of farmers." Having scripted for countless daily soaps and movies, including Salman Khan's Veer, the stimulation to write this one came long ago. "I remember coming to know about this village Badlapur long ago. I thought it was a catchy and thought-provoking name. However, the name of the place fit into the title of this film perfectly even though it has been shot in Rajasthan." Sporty spirit Joining him is the film's protagonist (read hero) Nishan, who has to his credit a long list of Malyalam films and also David, Subhash Ghai's Cycle Kick. "I have been a sportsperson all my life. I used to play tennis, football and cricket. For the film, we had a good one-month kabaddi practice." He adds, "As for the rest of the players in the film, they are all state-level kabaddi players." While actress Puja Gupta (last seen in Vicky Donor, Mickey Virus and Oh My God) plays his love support system and love interest, Annu Kapoor plays a convincing kabaddi coach; a casting decision Shailesh takes proud credit for. "We wanted somebody who was not urbane looking, but had a rugged appeal. On seeing the final cuts, I couldn't have been happier with my decision." It is seldom that script takes precedence over star cast; it is a criterion he stuck to while casting the entire team. "I agree that stars have their own value. So does the story. We needed somebody who did not have an image. Every film has its requirement, those requirements should be respected." It's been a level playing field while casting and we hope the good run continues.

Sound of silence
There's a rhythm in silence. It's not easy to catch. It's not easy to ignore. What if you're in the business of providing that rhythm; of giving joy to a gleaming face; giving intensity to the tense; giving music to simple movement?
French music company Le Philharmonique de la Roquette has been pursuing this art of off-beat rhythm for the past 19 years. For the past 15, they've been familiarising their audience with a concept called 'cine-concerts'. Responsible for the music of silent films like Bave Circus (2008), La Migration Bigoudenn (2007) and the Academy Award nominated Oktapodi (2007), the trio has been performing concerts, providing live music to silent films in front of your eyes, for movies of all genres. "When we started off with the concept of cine concerts, it was with animated movies, for kids. And when you're catering for kids, you tend to work inside a cage, boxed up by limitations of their understanding. But that's how we got our first 'grown up' movie project. There on, in a day, we used to hold a concert for kids in the morning and one for 'big kids' in the evening. Thus, we got into giving music for black-and-white films, including some of Charlie Chaplin's," says Nicholas Gounin, the sound engineer. Musicians Laurent Bernard (piano), Lillian Bencini (double bass) and Julian Kamoun (drums and percussion) have been travelling through Europe — Spain, Poland Switzerland etc — and India — Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and now Chandigarh. "It truly began in 1997; it took two years to set up our concept; in the beginning we were doing music for plays. But, since the word 'go' our aim has been to break conventions about music. We didn't want to play piano or the drums the way they are supposed to be played. We haven't stuck to a particular genre; we do everything from electronica to acoustic to classic to folk to rock; it's modern music," says Lilian Bencini. And thus came about the discussion of playing the saw. This is when Laurent picks up his blunt saw and the cello's bow and creates unfamiliar sounds, which he assures, are a part of the production they've brought to Chandigarh—Le P'tit Cine-Concert 2 (The Small Cine-Concert 2). About the same, Laurent Bernard says, "It's an animated short film, wherein a music conductor is conducting our band. Just that we play it live as that animated character conducts us!" The trio has also produced this film, among a few others that they've given sound for. Up next, they hope to return to India next year with Le P'tit Cine-Concert

Apple of the ‘I’
The moment is here, much-awaited, much talked about, just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's eloquent speeches. The moment that might change your perception about certain selected few, it is the moment 'to flaunt'; a final moment when owner's pride will make the neighbour's envy! As the crisp currency is stacked in the pocket, the balance in the credit card is checked, the moment is declared — 'I am going to buy iPhone 6." After seeing hundred and one videos on Youtube it's time to get up, close and personal with iPhone 6.
First take Even if you don't have a logical answer for it, you still have to believe that there have been record pre-launch orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as Apple will start midnight sales for its devices in India for the first time, in line with the practice it follows elsewhere. The phones are to be launched in India on October 17. If you check on reports floating on the internet, more than 5,000 of the new handsets have been reserved at Apple stores, multi-brand retail chains and e-commerce sites in the past five days. Actor and anchor of a new show Mr Punjab on PTC, Kartar Cheema, would ideally want to be the first one to own iPhone 6, "But I know there are many like me who have been postponing their decision to buy a new phone till this one hits the Indian market. I have already booked it and also contacted a dealer for the same." Kartar says he likes to upgrade his phone every year and is a die-hard Apple fan. "In between I shuttled between 2-3 other brands; Apple is, however, where my loyalty lies." Satbir Aulakh, a businessman from Austria visiting his singer-actor friend Harman in Mohali, would rather pick a piece from India. "I haven't made any booking, but I will walk into a retail shop and pick one for myself," he says adding that the price can be a deterrent for the Indian market. "I think the sales will gradually pick up since many people have already started saying that the 6 is almost like Google Nexus 5." The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus go on sale on Friday in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. A week later they'll go on sales in 20 more countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and United Arab Emirates. Midnight fever Now you have to wait till midnight on Friday to buy the much-hyped iPhone 6. In this unique launching, dealers in Chandigarh and around will keep their stores open. Adds Siddharth from Bobby Electronics, Sector-35, Chandigarh, "We will keep the store open for sometime for the launch. We will only stock Apple 6, priced at Rs 53, 500; iPhone plus will come later. For the last three days, my phone has not stopped ringing with so many people calling up with their queries." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Gem of an idea
It doesn’t get better than classic meets contemporary. Does it ever? However, it often takes a lot to bring, the often cited, best of both worlds. Or, shall we say the blend of both worlds.
An endeavour Mitaali Vohra set out to achieve while conceiving her debut jewellery venture The Bohemian. Coming from The Roopa Vohra House of Design, jewellery happened naturally to the junior Vohra. Though there’s a tale behind the twist. “While I’ve always admired my mother’s jewellery, but for me as a youngster, it would be over the top,” she laughs, while introducing the new line. “I have always been fond of pretty girlie accessories and would always be fond of Claire’s and similar shops. It was an idea to create a perfect blend of accessories and jewellery,” she shares on bringing The Pataka Diaries, a two-day trunk show to Chandigarh. For once, Roopa Vohra proudly takes backstage and let her creations do the talking, that too in favour of her daughter. “These days a lot of destination weddings and beach weddings are coming up. People do not like to travel with heavy and expensive pieces all the time. This line caters to the age group of 18 to 35 years olds and is reasonably priced starting at a range of Rs 5,000,” she is more than happy to be answering the initial queries. “She definitely retains my sensibilities and loves using colour and also gives traditional designs a twist. However, this line is a lot funkier and easily wearable,” she shares, talking of the collection comprising chaand baalis, neckpieces in blues and corals and other items in a spread of stones and pearls. Creative strokes It has been a while since the boho-chic collection, The Bohemian, has been in progress from the ideation to creation. “I first thought of the idea last December and, however, things have been in full swing only for the past two to three months. I first brought in alloy pieces and then came about with silver line,” she shares of the collection, in
total comprising 500 to 600 pieces. While films remain the first love of the 23-year-old, who studied film making at a university in Boston, jewellery it is to fill in the creative void and idle hours. “I am a director’s assistant at Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films and have just finished with Lekar Hum Deewana Dil and Finding Fanny. Films definitely are my first love but designing is something I enjoy doing, especially during my time off.” Talk of once finding a connecting thread between films and jewellery. “I would really like to work on 70’s hippie culture and do a film where I can do justice to this theme.” Talk of the city, she shares, “I am very connected to Chandigarh. My mother is from here and grandparents stay here. This is the reason why I brought in my first trunk show to the city.” Well,
we hope the city reciprocates too. manpriya@tribunemail.com

star track Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who will be next seen in YRF film Fan, will be reportedly playing a double role in the film. Sources claim that Khan will play himself as well as a commoner named Rahul (which seems to be SRK's favourite on-screen name) in the film, which is being directed by Maneesh Sharma. It is also being said that the film will have elements of humour and a series of incidents with mistaken identities, resulting in a comedy of errors. The makers are also planning to create a replica of Khan's residence Mannat at Film City for some scenes. The famous Rajdhani Express is also being rebuilt inside Yash Raj Studios for a scene between SRK and the villain of the film, Fan. Director Maneesh Sharma is looking into all the details which are being kept under wraps. The last time the King Khan was seen in a double role was in Duplicate, in which he played a naïve chef and a vicious criminal.
Ranveer caught with his pants down!
The Happy Budday song from Yash Raj Films upcoming film Kill Dil made Ranveer take off
his pants.
Happy Budday is the birthday song in Kill Dil in which Ranveer Singh sings at Parineeti Chopra's birthday party in the film. The song was shot in Lavasa at night and it was very hot, around 40 degrees at that time. In this heat, Ranveer Singh was wearing leather pants for the song. While shooting the song, the heat got to him and Ranveer became so uncomfortable in the leather pants that he took them off for air. A pantless Ranveer was quite a sight for many present and created a huge commotion. The girls who were dancers in the song, started cat calling and whistling at Ranveer. Hearing the noise, people came to their windows to see what the commotion was about. People even came out of their houses and down in their night suits to see Ranveer without pants. People took pictures of Ranveer with his pants off and this further complicated things. The unit had to run around taking everybody's, including the dancers' cell phones and deleting the pictures. However Parineeti took a picture of Ranveer with his pants down and she has said she will keep it to blackmail him. Kill Dil also stars Govinda and Ali Zafar. Directed by Shaad Ali, it releases on November 14.
India is a very cinematic country: Peter
Veteran British film and television director Peter Webber, who is best known for his debut feature Girl With A Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, is a part of the jury at the ongoing 16th Mumbai Film Festival. He will be judging the International Competition section along with Mahamat Saleh Haroun, Ritesh Batra and Ron Mann.
In an exclusive conversation, we catch up with him to talk about the festival, India and his upcoming documentary Ten Billions. Are you excited to be a part of Mumbai Film Festival? Of course, I am excited to be a part of Mumbai Film Festival. It's always a great honour to be a part of any jury for a film festival. But to be a president is even more of an honour. Mumbai is an amazing city. I was here for five years, so it's great to be back, watch movies for a week, sit and discuss them with my esteemed fellow jurists. What are you looking for in a film? I am just looking for a good film. In a way, you have all these per-conceptions. You want something that's going to be the voice of a filmmaker. Then, there is the script, performances, whether the story was told in an interesting way. Whether it's a fresh story or an old story but told in a new way. You know it's not that different from when you go with your friends to watch a film and then come out and discuss. Except most of the people who are a part of the jury are experienced filmmakers. So, maybe there are more informed and educated about the practices. Have you travelled around India? Yes, I've travelled from the very North to very South. I've been to Rajasthan, Goa, Kerela, and Tamil Nadu. Have you considered shooting a film in India? I would love to shoot here. I mean I haven't set my mind on a script or found an Indian topic but I would really love to shoot here. I think it's a very cinematic country. One of the things I've enjoyed most about my job is that you go to another country and get to spend time there. So, when I did Emperor with Tommy Lee Jones, I spent a year in New Zealand. It's such a fantastic country, and such lovely people. I really enjoy working around the world. Would like to collaborate with Indian filmmakers and artistes? Well, I'm here and I'm here for business. So, if any Indian producers want to talk to me, I'm at their disposal. Come and talk to me at Mumbai Film Festival so maybe we can go to a coffee shop in Juhu and discuss something. Tell us about your upcoming documentary, Ten Billion. It's a film about what will happen to us in the future, especially what will happen if we don't change the direction we are going in. It focuses on issues like population, climate change, the extinction crisis, ozone depletion and many other such issues. Let's just say that the world is going to be a lot more dangerous after thirty years. The film should be coming out early next year. Do you believe in it? I do believe in it very much or I would not be showing it. I worked for a year with a scientist called Stephen Emmott. He is a very respectable scientist. The film is very alarming and the situation is very alarming itself. I think anyone with any intelligence, who looks at and really studies demographic and climate change realises that we need to do something about these issues. So, I do believe in it.

No good roles for Indians in Hollywood: Imran Khan
Actors like Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur may be making inroads into the Hollywood scene, but actor Imran Khan feels the American film industry lacks good roles for Indian talent.
"To be honest, I don't think Indian actors get good roles in Hollywood. You either get to be the hero's friend, the guy who owns the 7-Eleven (convenience store) on the corner," the 31-year-old said on the sidelines of the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival. "The truth is there are no good roles for Indians in Hollywood. I am very happy here," added the actor, who has been seen in movies like Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane, I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly. Anil, who featured in a key role in Oscar-winning British film Slumdog Millionaire, was seen in a small role in Tom Cruise-starrer Misson Impossible: Ghost Protocol and was also seen in the eighth season of American TV series 24. Irrfan has featured in international films like A Mighty Heart, The Amazing Spider-Man and Life of Pi, while Nimrat was roped in for a part in the fourth season of the American TV series Homeland. Others in the list are Ali Fazal, who has a cameo in Fast & Furious 7 and Arfi Lamba, who has bagged the film The Key Project with Lady Gaga.— IANS
Deepika’s keen on French, Iranian films
Deepika Padukone is ready to work in films beyond Bollywood, but she is not gunning for Hollywood. The versatile Indian actress is, instead, keen to do a French or Iranian film. She has even identified directors she would like to work with.
"I think French cinema is as beautiful as Indian cinema and like I said before, I don't think the medium matters as much as the story and the script. If I find something exciting, I would do it," the 28-year-old said, on Wednesday, at the 16th Mumbai Film Festival. Priceless is one of my favourite French films. I have watched some Iranian films as well. I do like some directors and I have identified some directors I would like to work with," she added. Deepika is currently busy promoting her mega commercial venture, Happy New Year, which hits theatres on October 24. Directed by Farah Khan, it also stars Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. — IANS

Telly queen’s tale
Ekta Kapoor recently launched her TV show Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai on Sony Pal. The show, which stars Navi Bhangu and Aparna Dixit in lead roles, is based in Bihar and will portray the love story of two people who were never meant to be together. In a quick chat, Ekta talks about her new show.
What is the new show about? The show is about different kind of love. I'm really new to this kind of concept. I've always been fascinated by characters existing in the same place, but with different ideologies. One family is very rich but has double standards. The other is middle-class, but is progressive in thoughts. How difficult was it to recreate Bihar for the show? It was tough. I had to interact with so many people, as I couldn't really shoot in Bihar. It was shocking to see how people treat their own children on the basis of their gender. It was a learning experience. The show has a 7 pm slot. Is it unusual? Well, I never really had the 7 pm slot before. But prime-time is changing and shows are doing well in these slots. Moreover, the show will cater to rural audience, so I wanted an early slot. Have you ever thought of directing? I don't think I've the talent to direct a TV show. I'm happy with whatever I am doing and I don't really want to get into direction. What shows do you watch on TV? There are so many good shows on TV that if I watch them, I might lose my sleep because of the competition. Even if I watch my own show and find something wrong, I might lose my sleep. So it's better for me not to watch! My team keeps me updated.
