Dress decode
Calf length dresses in flirty chiffon, a neat hairdo and French manicure—voila, you are ready for a brunch party!

Maria Goretti; and Shruti Seth

It is neither a date, nor an evening out, not a club night, not a day out on the streets, not even a Sunday at home. Dressing up for a brunch party is not as much of a fashion crisis as a style dilemma. A faux paus attributed to ignorance rather than negligence.

As the weather opens up making way for outdoor evenings, afternoon parties and Sunday brunches, here's decoding the perfect brunch party look.

It's one of the instances where the ground rules can be laid in terms of what not to wear rather than what to wear. "The most common mistake I've seen women make while getting dressed for a brunch party is that they overdo the look. Just remember it is not an evening out," says Delhi based designer Ripci Bhatia, from the label, La Amour Faith. She highlights two key words-simple and chic. Among the several garments that can be opted for she focuses on, "calf length dresses in flirty chiffons, interesting prints in pastel hues, English garden florals, linen trousers in soft hues paired with a tank top or a shirt."

Throw in a soft jacket to keep snug in case there's a nip in the air and as for accessories, let the things be limited to an interesting scarf. Like she said, "Keep it simple and proper. A neat hairdo, French manicure and you are good to go."

Less is more

Earlier, this year starlet Shruti Seth and husband Danish Aslam's Sunday brunch party saw a swarm of small screen celebrities make the lazy Sunday appear a little cool with their fashion quotient. While Shruti rightly paired white linen trousers with a dressy top, former VJ Maria Goretti, kept things bordering on resort wear.

Actress Sridevi, while making an appearance at Neeta Lula's birthday brunch party, a year and half ago, perhaps nailed it. While dressed in shades of white and yellow, she kept the look chic and yet dressy.

Designer Nida Mahmood lays the down ground rules loud and clear. "Smart casual is the bracket that one should be in. Brunches are meant to let your hair down, mingle with close friends and family. One should dress casual even bordering on resort if it is the summer. For the winter, a light throw on dresses works very well."

She adds, "Depending on the seasonal trend, one could wear statement neck pieces or scarves. A nice pair of sunglasses is a must for a sunny brunch in the winter."

No black please!

If it doesn't get more casual than a Sunday brunch, it doesn't get more formal than a charity brunch party. Model and television presenter Louise Roe set the benchmark last year, while turning up at pre-Oscar brunch party hosted by UNICEF and Mont Blanc.

The orange and white stripes and white pointy pumps gave a crisp finish to the day look.

As much as colour white is a clear shot at getting things right, colour black is a big no. shares Nida, "I feel black should be left for very formal occasions unless you are styling the dress with something fun and representative of the day. I also feel shoes must be chosen depending on the location of the brunch. Sometimes girls wear stilettos for an outdoor brunch ending up jabbing their heels into the soil. Keep the location and space in mind while choosing shoes." There is no getting away from the countless mistakes often made at outdoor events. Some help, little signs and simple rules can go miles in making sure you are dressed as fine as a clear day.

Aamir wants to play Circuit

When Munna and Rancho are on sets along with their makers, the conversation largely is around Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots. While shooting on the sets of PK, Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt would indulge in conversation about Rajus' two films they have worked in.

During the discussion on the making of Munna Bhai, Aamir would always say how he would once like to do the role of the very famous Circuit. Aamir has always liked Munna Bhai. He told Raju that if there ever was a third installment of the film he would love to play the role of Circuit. He thinks he would be the best choice for Circuit's role.

Raju has worked with both Aamir and Sanjay Dutt in his three block buster films. Aamir and Sanjay's friendship goes a long way back. The three of them had spent a lot of time together while on the sets and shared a great bond with each other.

The three of them even now are in constant touch. Sanjay has been writing letters to both Raju and Aamir to know what's happening around and how the film is looking. The spokesperson adds, "Aamir is often heard saying that he would like to do the role of Circuit. Aamir, Sanjay and Raju's camaraderie is very well known on sets which only makes them comfortable working together."

Catching up with fashion

Ace designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, whose collection at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week paid tribute to the weavers of denim industry, feels that Indians are not good with creating denim outfits.

His spring/summer 2015 collection, titled Blue Blood, launched khadi denim which is made with natural fabrics keeping in mind the hazards caused by it. "My inspiration is indigo. We have been working for this collection from few years now. This is what it has come down to and we finished the collection this afternoon. "Denims are one of the most polluted fabrics and here in India we don't know how to make it. But if we make raw and pure denim it's fantastic," the designer said.

The show saw a group of weavers sitting on the ramp while models walked on it showcasing his collection. Even an elderly weaver walked the runway, which had an audio-visual presentation of creation of these naturally-woven denims running on the screens.

"Those were my colleagues from my factory. They were wearing my creations," he said. — PTI

To Lisa, from Lisa

It's over six months since the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Queen released, but Canada-born Indian actress Lisa Ray has watched it only now, and she has only words of praise for Lisa Haydon's performance in the film.

"I'm sooo late to the party, but finally watching #Queen on the big, flat screen. Simply love my gal @HaydonLisa. What presence. Luv u Lisi," Lisa tweeted Saturday.

When the movie released March 7, it was loved for its simply told story of a Delhi-based Punjabi girl, who sets out on her honeymoon alone, and in the bargain, she finds out her strengths and her ability to be a strong and independent individual.

Now get ready for French remakes

The Indian movie industry is the world's most productive, with around 1,000 feature films produced each year and local films accounting for over 90 per cent of national movie admissions. Also known as a big consumer of screenplays, Indian cinema had for a long time helped itself to stories borrowed from international movies to produce remakes, without paying the necessary film adaptation copyright fees. However, such practices have now been rectified and the market for legal remakes has boomed in recent years.

French screenplays can be of considerable interest to Indian producers and La Fabrique films have recently facilitated the adaptation of the French film After You (Apres vous) directed by Pierre Salvadori and produced by Les Films Pelléas. The Indian remake, Nautanki Saala directed by Rohan Sippy was released in India in 2013.

La Fabrique Films facilitated the recent sale of the remake rights of the French film Beautiful Lies (De Vrais mensonges) directed by Pierre Salvadori and produced by Les Films Pelleas on the Indian market.

UniFrance Films and La Fabrique Films are organising for the first time, a Films Remakes Market, which will be held on October 15 and 16, in cooperation with the Mumbai Film Festival.

A selection of recent French films selected for the compatibility of their narratives with the tastes of Indian audiences will also be presented to Indian producers in the presence of the films' French producers and/or exporters. A series of individual meetings will be held following the screenings. The films selected include Serial (Bad) Weddings, which will be presented by Alexandre de la Porte (UGC), In the Courtyard (Philippe Martin, Les Films Pelléas), Homeland (Quad), Not My Type (Patrick Sobelman, Agat Films & Cie), Where Do We Go Now? and Superchondriac (Pathé).

I’d love to do Punjabi films: Aditi

Famous model and actress Aditi Sharma, who appeared in Mausam and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, talks about her latest film Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami and more.

Tell us about your role

I play Taanya Srivastav. She aspires to become a writer. She is very brave and courageous. She works at the chief minister's office and writes speeches for him. She comes from today's generation and is quite open-minded.

How was the experience shooting for the film?

I enjoyed working on this film. There were no stars on the sets as we were all actors working on this film. Our intention was to make a good film, so feedback was always welcomed. We tried our best to make a good film and I am really proud of it.

Do you have any expectations from the film?

Before we started working on this film, I just wanted it to be good. Now that I've seen it, I have never felt this proud about any film. I think this film will work at the box-office as people are appreciating good cinema.

What kept you away from films for two years?

Well, I have been constantly working. I shot for two films, Saatuchakke and Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami and they're releasing now. I also shot many ads during that time. Moreover, I am quite active in the theatre scene and it all takes up my time.

Are you open to working in Punjabi cinema?

Definitely. If I can act in Telugu films, why wouldn't I act in my own language film? In fact, it will be a lot easier.

What kind of role are you looking for?

I am a greedy actor. I keep looking for good roles. I like to be a part of films that I can be proud of. Normally after reading the script, I know if I want to be a part of any film or not. I look for substance.

Floral tribute
Rose, lotus, sunflower, lilac, geranium… artist Vandana Malhotra's exhibition is inspired by the beauty of flowers...
Manpriya Singh

Along with the countless interpretations, art comes with countless inclinations. While some like it figurative, some like it simple. Way too simple; as simple as a bunch of roses put together in a frame. Chandigarh-based artist Vandana Malhotra's exhibition, titled Fragrances, on at Bistro Flamme Bois, can be summed up in one word — floral.

Shares Neepa Sharma, the curator, "People actually requested me to hold an exhibition of something that they could just buy and simply put on their walls." Well, the 20 to 22 frames are all set to ensure that less of thoughts and more of aesthetics go into taking your pick. "I titled it fragrances because to me flowers spell hope and positivity. Come to think of it, life is like a flower, very soft and delicate," shares the artist, a doctorate in visual arts from BHU Varanasi. "I have been an artist for almost two decades now and have worked on figurative works to landscapes. But nature and painting flowers is where I find my peace, which I love to spread." She adds, "I also love to travel, so I just set out with my camera clicking flowers of various species and sizes."

While two of the works are oil-based, for the rest the medium remains water-colours. "Artists are usually afraid of touching water colours but I enjoy doing them. The works are priced from Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000." As for the subject, most of the flowers have been captured from the city. From the ubiquitous roses to the season's muse, that is lotus, take your pick. Moving on, there are alamandas, sunflowers, lilacs, geraniums and lilies. "I haven't quite repeated any flower; hope to continue with their series in the future and paint until I am ready with hundred frames." It doesn't get simpler than that and will once again be summed up in one word — floral.

"We have 180 security guards stationed at different levels at any given point of time. There will also be traffic policemen and volunteers stationed at the appropriate places. We will also boost the number of teams checking at the entrance," says Manoj. He adds, "We keep carrying mock fire drills, which are measured for response time. SRK in comedy zone

What happens when the king of romance meets the king of comedy? Well, it calls for a royal laughter challenge. We can imagine how funny and hilarious the outcome must have been. Heart to heart...

New channel Sony Pal has joined hands with Balaji Telefilm's Ekta Kapoor to present the serial Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai from October 16. The show is Ekta Kapoor's first association with Anooj Kapoor and Sony Pal. Ekta Kapoor says it was a challenge for her and the team as they have usually restricted themselves to urban set-ups. "I don't have any friends and relatives staying in non-metro cities. It was a challenge for all of us; we did our own research, visited that place, observed the culture and modified the storyline accordingly," she says.

Set in the city of Patna, the show charts the journey of Poorvi (played by Aparna Dixit), the daughter of a senior government employee and Arjun (played by Navi Bhangu), who plays the spoilt son of the local coal mafia. Initially, Poorvi and Arjun can't see eye to eye, but slowly they get drawn towards each other and eventually go on to combat all family antagonism for their love. Unfortunately, both are destined to be apart. It is thus the story of two star-crossed lovers, their journey of adoration and hatred.

Aggressive action

Star Plus' numero uno show Diya Aur Baati Hum (Shashi Sumeet Productions Pvt Ltd) has seen a transformation from saas bahu saga to 'terrorism-related' tracks. The story has definitely stood out with the bahu of the house Sandhya (Deepika Singh) getting into the action mode and battling a crisis in the nation.

In the coming episodes, Sandhya will face a grave scenario where the terrorist gang led by Maya (Gurdeep Kohli) will plan to attack village Pushkar on the pious occasion of Karwa Chauth. Sandhya and Zakir (Neil Bhatt) will get to know that the terrorists are using the Karwa (goods used in the festivities) to send across ammunition.

The duo will get alerted and make a move to stop the act. The family will be disturbed by the fact that Sandhya will choose to be with her cop team rather than celebrating the ritual with them.
