Armaan Malik may have been born in the digital era, but this former Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champ does not think much of the concept of free music which led to the death of CD culture

While the 'Oh! so glorious' era of album culture (that once dominated the music scene of India) seems to be dying a torturous death in the era of digital download, the debate about free music is not the only issue that concerns the musicians today.

Having released a single, titled, Leja Zakham Tere, from his debut album called Armaan, the Bollywood and Indie pop singer, Armaan Malik, 19, talks about the changing music trends.

Armaan, who rose to fame with the music-based television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs, begins, "I owe my music career to the show as it gave me much recognition. But, the fame that music-based reality shows offer is perishable and one has to work hard to be able to carve a niche in music."

Having worked with a series of talented music directors, including Salim Sulaiman, Armaan was listed as the youngest singer working with the Universal Music and has sung several songs for films like Jai Ho, Bhootnath, Rakta Charitra, Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii, Taare Zameen Par and Chillar Party. However, he roots for Indie music. "I sang a song with Amitabh Bachchan in the film, Bhootnath and for Salman Khan's Jai Ho also. However, Bollywood songs are governed by the whims and fancies of the film director and the script. As a musician, I like singing, but I like Indie music because it gives you the creative liberty," he shares.

Though Armaan Malik has been following the Indie music scene for long, he studied music (western vocals) at the Berklee College of Music. "I started writing and composing my own songs, including the song Love You Till the End from Jai Ho," he shares.

However, while talking about the changing trends in music, Armaan seems to be quite de-motivated by the death of CD culture, even though his album sold quite a few copies in India. "I am up for streaming, but I do not understand the idea of free music. We put in a lot of effort to come up with a song and to be doing it for free is just not cool," he rues.

The list of Armaan's influences in music ranges from Bollywood classics to the hip-hop. "When I was young, I would often listen to Mohammad Rafi and Kishore da's songs, but as I grew older I took to Michael Steven Bublé, Frank Sinatra, Jason Derulo, Chris Brown and Justin Bieber," he says.

Though Armaan's latest single, Leja Zakham Tere has been written and composed by his elder brother, Amaal Malik, he shares that he was inspired by Justin Bieber's song Change Me while he composed his hit song, Kyun. "I have already sold about 4,000 units of Leja Zakham Tere, which people have really liked," he says. Armaan talks about portals like Coke Studio, Nescafe Basement and Balcony TV, "I really like the concept of Balcony TV."

Bangalore-born and Melbourne-based designer Roopa Pemmaraju is all set to showcase a collection featuring Australian artists on garments made of Indian fabrics

Floral tribute: A model wears another outfit

Fashion has long been associated with feverish pace and frivolous nature. It's a world constantly in pursuit of luxury, wherein the artisans rank lower than the art and playful muse higher than thoughtful inspiration. But not each time!

"Our inspiration comes from the artisans and the communities that we work with, their history and unbelievable abilities influence our direction throughout the process," as a Bangalore-born and Melbourne based designer, Roopa Pemmaraju strives to present the unlikely confluence.

She's all set to showcase a luxury yet ready-to-wear collection featuring Australian artists on garments using fabrics created by Indian artisans. "This collection has been created in collaboration with renowned indigenous Australian artists from Warlukurlangu and Yuendumu among other places. We have also worked with Reko Rennie, whose art incorporates his association to the Kamilaroi people. Elisa Jane Carmichael, who will travel to New Delhi for the runway show is a descendant of the Quandamooka people of Moreton Bay, Queensland," she shares the details, all agog before showcasing her collections at the ongoing Fashion Design Council of India's Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015.

Apart from an effort to rope in the community, there is also a strong reflection of personal style in the collections. "My own sense of style can be described as a blend of colours, art and artisans. I always love to combine theses elements in my collection, which is yet again sophisticated and modern, something that can be seen in the upcoming collection."

"There are many, many designers that I love and that I am looking forward to seeing showcase their work", she however, stays clear of naming any one of them.

Exotic origin

Creative calling: Roopa Pemmaraju (L)

Despite the continental shift, the collection reflects a fair share of the country of origin. There is as much of an Indian artisan as the Australian influence. "In developing this collection in India, we have collaborated with weavers from Varanasi, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Studio Calantha, a Bengaluru-based atelier founded by myself. Our production team helps our vision transfer into modern silhouettes and to beautiful produced garments. The indigenous communities of Australia have also been a huge influence, with their artworks guiding our collections with the amazing stories they tell."

Indian imprint

India and what it has to offer figure just as prominently in the future plans.

"As India is so vast, there are many techniques that we would love to explore. We are particularly passionate about combining embroidery techniques in our designs. This is something that India offers with great potential." With each state popular for its unique method (read Phulkari from Punjab, Bandhini from Rajasthan et al, Kantha from West Bengal), there is scope galore. She adds, "We hope to have the time to explore and incorporate more of these techniques and Indian works in our future collections." Well, we hope so too.

As a woman entrepreneur in the liquor industry, things have not been easy for Lisa Srao. She shares her story…

Last laugh: Lisa Srao. Photo: Parvesh Chauhan

The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do," said Steve Jobs, probably the guy who has most significantly inspired the world lately. Lisa Srao, chairman and managing director, is one of the tribe of entrepreneurs who lives and dies by the dictum!

Born and brought up in UK, Lisa moved to Bangalore post her marriage. Unable to find basics like biscuits of international quality or any variety in local markets; she saw a huge opportunity in almost negligible supply of premium segment products. After years of research and development, she thought of venturing into, a market very few women of the country would dare, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) industry.

Now with five to six big players already ruling pockets in various states, and many startups having shut their shops within months of beginning operations, Lisa's I Brands Beverages Ltd is growing double every fiscal year since its beginning in 2010 and even hopes to triple this fiscal year. Her secret to success, "To give quality product with an international standard," says Lisa who was in Chandigarh on Thursday to reach out to more and more consumers and partners. With her father's established liquor business in UK including Double Dutch Beer, the acumen came naturally to Lisa who not only worked to make her brand suit Indian market's palate but also enhance the presentation.

While the initial years were most challenging when Lisa launched Granton Whisky, Rum 99, Three Royals Whisky and Granton XO Brandyi in select states, she kept going step by step.

With pricing that starts from Rs 250, Lisa is sure that she wants to woo mass market premium segment for the upper segment has plenty of options from abroad. "Initially being unknown in the market, no one would take us seriously and distributors would royally ignore me while holding the conversation with my manager only," admits Lisa who was not to be deterred. With those very people becoming repeat customers, she has built a solid foundation. "We had to work on taste too, initial feedback demanded strong flavours that we duly worked on," she shares. Outsourcing at the moment, she is looking forward to have at least two factories, one in North and another in South to begin with and also go pan India soon.

This gorgeous mother of two, a fantasy artist, uses her artistic skills in designing brand logos and packaging and banks on her young team that includes women too.

Punjabis, who love to celebrate and splurge, figure in her priority list too. She shares, "While growing up in UK, I would be brought back every year to Punjab to keep me connected to my roots and I did love the jolly spirit of the state."

Now settled in Bangalore, with her husband who is an entrepreneur too, she is happy taking I Brands ahead. Managing both the fronts, home and work requires her to plan smartly, which she has managed pretty well. And yes, with a start up in brown spirits, she is personally a wine lover a field she is yet not thinking of foraying into.

A tale of two girls
Mona

Two young girls from the city, one aiming to be a top golfer and another actor, got together on a late Wednesday afternoon as guests of honour at a store launch in Chandigarh. Success has come early but not that they haven't strived for it.

Starting early, at the age of three, Vasundhara Thaira has grown up to love golf. "I love playing golf," says the 10-year-old, ranked number 17 in the world amongst golfer kids. She is happy sharing as to how she got initiated into golf, "My brother was playing cricket one day with his friends and I wanted to join. Since the bat was too heavy for me, they gave me a tennis racket instead. My parents noticed the sports streak in me and introduced me to golf." Since then Vasundhara has been giving as much, if not more, attention to golf as her studies. Tournaments have taken her around the world and this confident golfer's immediate goal is to make it to Asia's top 5.

Anjali Aastha grew up admiring Madhuri Dixit onscreen, especially her expressions. In this case too, it was her mother who noticed the dance streak in her pretty early and put her into kathak classes. As she learnt dance, her passion to make it big only grew. An opportunity came in the form of India's Best Dramebaaz.

Making it to the final, Anjali's life has changed the very way she wanted it to be, "People know me now, I am a mini celebrity," says the girl.

The show taught her a lot of things including the stamina to work hard and how to get over her emotional side. "My stint at IBD has taken me a step closer to my dreams," says the girl, whose dream is to act, sing and choreograph in her own film! Reality shows come at a price, but bubbly Anjali is all grateful for the chance she got. "We would begin early like six or seven and be back late at night but I never felt tired because the cast and crew would give me so much love," says Anjali, who bonded best with Vivek Oberoi for both of them were sentimental fools and would cry out loud!

The girls were there to inaugurate Oodles, an extension of Ajanta Graphics and a store that specialises in customising kids' room décor right from wallpapers, furnishing to furniture. So if you want your kids' picture for a lamp or chairs with their names engraved, you can have them here. Give their rooms a theme you want and if not keen on complete walls, pick up borders available in several themes.

If Diwali shopping is on your mind and you are still wondering whether to go online or offline; you have got help at Zopper.com. Brainchild of Vaibhav Garg, this site helps you choose the best deal from about 2000 e-commerce sites and 1,50,000 offline retailers.

"With huge price variations in product costs within the online portals, if you use Zopper you can fetch a better deal. And, unlike Google you needn't go from page to page comparing prices, we get it all for you at Zopper," says Vaibhav.

What's more you can also compare prices of a particular product in retail market closer home. With retail merchants from metros and tier I and tier II cities associated with Zopper, it looks like a good platform to compare.

With online shopping coming under the scanner for variable prices, non-delivery in stipulated time, warranty issues, looks like it's worthwhile to check the deals at city stores as well.

There is option available at Zopper with limited stores in their inventory and increasing. However, Zopper doesn't actually sell any product on its own and just guides you to it.

We ask Vaibhav, with experience in e-commerce industry and with three years of Zopper being up and running, as to the safeguards one must take while choosing to shop online, "Online portal's huge discounts look attractive but there is a possibility, more than you expect, that you find a similar deal in the actual market. Check Zopper and call a few stores before making the final purchase," says Vaibhav Well happy shopping…

Business over pleasure

Actor and philanthropist Vivek Oberoi who was instrumental in the success of the Mega Blood Donation Drive was to take off for his yearly family vacation in Mauritius. However, he has now decided to postpone it as he is all set to start shooting for Yash Raj's next film Bank Chor.

While the shoot was to go on floors mid-October, the makers decided to pre-pone the shoot leaving Vivek no time to take off for a vacation. A source reveals, "Vivek was busy with the Mega Blood Donation Drive on this birthday this year and so the entire family had decided to celebrate it in Mauritius on their vacation. However, now that the shoot of Bank Chor is pre-poned Vivek decided to shift things around to make himself available for the shoot and not inconvenience the team".

Mahira’s love for Bollywood

Mahira Khan is touted as one of the most talented Pakistani actors of today's times. Best known for her role as Khirad in popular Pakistani show Humsafar, Mahira started her career at the age of 16 as a VJ on MTV. She was also a model followed by a successful stint as an actor. Mahira made her acting debut with Shoaib Mansoor's critically acclaimed social movie Bol. She also played some powerful roles in TV shows like Neeyat, Shehr-e-Zaat and Humsafar.

Born in Karachi, Mahira got married to Ali Askari in 2007 and is mother to a son and a daughter. In a conversation, she talks about Bollywood, Hindi films and more.

Do you watch Bollywood movies?

I am a huge fan! I have grown up watching Hindi movies. We used to go to our neighbour's house to watch movies all the time. I love 50s-60s Bollywood movies. I love the work of Guru Dutt. You can name any black and white song and I'll know it. I love the songs of Mohammad Rafi.

What shows/movies have you done after Humsafar?

I did Shehr-e-Zaat after which gave me a lot of appreciation for my acting. While Humsafar made me popular, Shehr-e-Zaat made me famous as an actor. I have also been working on this film which is slated to release in January next year. I have now begun shooting for another film in Pakistan.

Would you be open to do Bollywood movies?

Sure, why not? But for me it's about what I have that I can give the Indian film industry and what already is missing. I would really work with Vishal Bhardwaj and Imtiaz Ali, they are both brilliant. I am also a great fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap.

Who is your favourite Indian actor?

I would be cheating on Shah Rukh if I take another name here. I would love to work with him someday. I have been a fan of his since I was 13 and my love for him stays strong even today. Ranveer Singh is also a fabulous actor.

Have you been offered any Indian films?

Yes. But I would not like to disclose any details because nothing ever materialised.

Have you been to India before?

I came to Mumbai a few years ago to attend a friend's wedding. I had a blast! I love Mumbai. I have also been to Delhi once for a fashion show where I had walked the ramp. This was right after Humsafar had aired in Pakistan. I would love to come to India again.

You are an extremely pretty woman. So, does beauty become a hindrance in recognition of acting talent?

I have faced that all the time, especially after Humsafar. Today, I have learned to accept it. If something is offered to me today, I don't mind that my face is being emphasized upon, but then again I don't need to compromise on my acting.

Ranveer goes for the kill

The actor who will next be seen in Yash Raj Films' Kill Dil has choreographed a recently released song from the film, Sweeta that features him and Parineeti Chopra.

The makers got Ganesh Acharya on board to choreograph the song. But, when he heard the track and got an understanding of which part of the story it is in, he decided to give a free hand to his actor. The song shows Parineeti doing several activities in her day and Ranveer Singh, who is in love with her, is around her all the time.

We have seen Ranveer Singh pull off some killer dance moves in his earlier films. However, this was the first time he tried his hand at choreographing a song.

A source reveals, "He was very excited about it as the song permits him to go absolutely crazy and for someone who is always so full of energy, it was too much fun."

Ranveer Singh in his character has gone absolutely crazy in the song playing around with different props, doing unusual things. The makers were very sure that Ranveer could pull this off and so gave him full rein.

The song just has mad moves and not a specific dance that people can follow.

Ganesh Acharya says "The best part about shooting Sweeta was that we gave Ranveer Singh full freedom in the song. He could do whatever he wanted to. There is no choreography or a signature move as such. But he has thoroughly enjoyed the song, done masti and at the same time brought the romantic feel to it."

Ranveer Singh shares, "Ganesh sir was too sweet to let me do my thing for Sweeta. They are not steps as such. I am just having fun in the song. There was no nervous energy; only excitement all throughout."

The balancing act

Actor Anuj Sachdeva, who is currently seen in Rajan Shahi's latest show Itti Si Kushi, talks about his role and more.

Tell us about your role?

I play Aman Goel. He is someone who has seen many things. He is mature and practical. He has many responsibilities as he takes care of his family. He loves his family. But at the same time, he wants to follow his dreams and he is not able to. With time, you will see many twists and turns in the show.

How was it working with Neha Saxena?

It's been great. She is a good actress. She plays the lead character Neha Saxena. Neha is someone who is very innocent and my character Aman Goel is protective of her. He wants to make sure that she stays happy. He feels happy when she is around him.

Are you enjoying shooting for the show?

It's been fantastic. I am enjoying the show. All of us work very hard. At the end of the day if anything goes wrong, we work as a team and rectify it. We are like one big family.

You are also starring in Punjabi film Police in Pollywood?

Yes, I am playing the lead. It's a romantic film with some comedy. It's my second Punjabi film.

What's next?

Well, I am enjoying my stint on TV and I am also doing Punjabi films. I actually missed being on TV. Not many actors will say that but TV has its charm and audience relates to it.

The derma roller technique is emerging as an effective solution for scars
Dr Alka Dogra

There was a time when only those who were born beautiful were 'certified' beauties, but nowadays, with modern techniques, it has become possible to look better and to modify imperfections, if any. But, it is also important that we understand the nuances of each technique before going in for it. One such technique in vogue is the derma roller technique.

The derma roller is used for acne scars, atrophic scars, chicken pox scars, burn scars, traumatic scars, post-stitch scars and striate atrophic. This technique has picked up pace of late. A lot of youngsters and middle-aged people are looking forward to it. A new derma roller is used on every patient and is discarded after each use. Usually, the roller used is 1.5 mm needle size. But, it is a slightly painful procedure. So, local anesthetic becomes essential before the process.

The skin surface is anesthetised with Dilocane or Lindocane; the under occlusion surface though is very apprehensive. Its ring blocks can be given. Scars cannot be improved hundred percent but improvement is remarkable, reaching levels of 30-40 per cent in most cases in this simple OPD technique.

Protection from sun post treatment is extremely important. Slight ooze or bleed stays for two to three days after the treatment. Post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation is to be avoided by the use of sunscreen and a lightening cream. The other name for this procedure is micro-needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT). This is a minimally-invasive procedure, which leads to smoothening of scarred skin with the effect of micro needles.
