16,000 children administered polio drops

Dera Bassi, September 21
The Punjab Health Department launched a pulse polio eradication drive and administered anti-polio vaccine to 16,000 children of 1 to 5 years of age, here today.

SMO Dr SK Mittal inaugurated the drive by administering drops of the vaccine to children at Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

Bhupinder Singh Dari, pulse polio nodal officer, informed that 140 teams, including six mobile teams of health employees and paramedical staff had been constituted to vaccinate 36,000 children in the sub-division.

The drive was launched with the assistance of the Rotary Club, Dera Bassi, and will continue till September 23, informed Bhupinder Singh Saini, chairman of Dera Bassi Rotary Club.

Carpenter stabs wife to death, injures himself

Chandigarh, September 21
A carpenter, a resident of Mauli Complex, Chandigarh, stabbed himself with a knife after stabbing his 23-year-old wife to death at their residence, here today.

Police officials said that the accused, Rakesh Kumar, got married to Dimple 11 months ago. It was a second marriage for both of them.

Sources said that Rakesh’s wife was unhappy with her marriage and wanted to get separated and spend her life with someone whom she liked.

The police said that in the afternoon the couple had an altercation over the issue following which Rakesh stabbed his wife twice in the stomach and then tried to kill self by stabbing himself in the stomach.

Police sources said that Rakesh’s sister-in-law, Savitiri, who along with his brother stays on the first floor of the house, saw Dimple lying in a pool of blood. She then noticed Rakesh was also lying nearby.

“While Dimple had died Rakesh was still breathing following which Savitri and her husband Deep Chand rushed Rakesh to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, in an auto-rickshaw from where he was referred to the PGI”, said a police official.

The police reached the spot and recovered the knife used in the crime. A team of CFSL also reached and took blood samples and fingerprints from the knife.

The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.

Two Sector 18 residents booked on charge of murdering domestic help

Chandigarh, September 21
The Chandigarh Police on the directions of the court have registered a case of murder against two Sector 18 residents for allegedly killing their domestic help earlier this year.

Dharinder Singh (22), son of Kunvar Singh, was found hanging from a tree in a park in Sector 18 on June 14. The deceased's father had approached the court alleging that his son didn't commit suicide but was killed by his employers and then hanged to a tree.

On the directions of the court, the police booked CL Sadana and Tarun Sadana for murder at the Sector 19 police station. An investigation into the case has been initiated.

8 booked for attempt to murder

Panchkula, September 21
The city police have booked eight persons for beating up and shooting at a Chandigarh resident while he was in a restaurant located on the Morni Road near here on Sunday.

A case of attempt to murder under Sections 148, 149, 323, 307, 427 and 452 of the IPC and the Arms Act has been registered against Monti, Shoki, Paisi, Kalia, Perri, Mani, Janed and Daman, all residents of Chandigarh and Burail, at the Chandimandir police station.

Station house officer Arvind Kumar said the police recorded the statement of the victim, who is admitted to a private hospital in Sector 21 with multiple injuries. No arrest has been made so far.

City girl in Asiad handball squad

International handball player Deepa, a student of Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, brought laurels to the city by confirming her place in the Indian Women Handball team for 2014 Asian Games being held in Incheon (South Korea).

The 19-year old player, who plays on both left back and right back positions, has trained under the guidance of coach Iqbal Singh at the handball courts of Sports Complex in Sector 42.

Earlier, she represented the nation in the Partille Cup held in Swedan last year. As a regular part of Chandigarh’s handball team, she had the honour to bag a gold medal in the National Handball Championship for girls. Meanwhile, she also represented Panjab University in the north zone and All-India Inter-University Handball Championship. “It’s a great moment for all of us. Deepa is a good back stopper and always play an important role in improving her team’s performance. She had represented the nation in Sweden’s Open Tournament and proved her iron,” said coach Iqbal Singh, who has coached nine players, played in the international circuit, of different age groups.

Notably, in 2012, she was selected to participate in the junior Asian Games however, later she was ruled out of the squad due to a serious knee injury. After recovering from the injury, she again made a comeback and confirmed her place in the team. “She is equally good in academics as in sports. We will continue to offer her our long lasting helping hand. She will be presented as a motivator for other students and players of the college,” said principal Meera Modi and assistant professor Veena (college coach).

Delhi eves get the better of Punjab by 3 wickets

Delhi eves defeated Punjab by three wickets in the second match of the ongoing First Rama Atray Memorial Women Cricket Tournament at Government Model Senior Secondary school, Sector 26, here today.

After electing to bat first, Punjab openers Reva Arora and Jasia Gul raised 70 runs in 19.4 overs before Jasia was caught by Mandeep off Lalita Sharma for 24 off 44 balls inclusive of two- boundaries. In the proceedings, Punjab soon lost their other opener Reva again by Lalita for 46 off 83 balls. Punjab failed to cover up the damages and managed a total of 107 for 4 in 32 overs. Later, Parveen Khan and Manisha Badhan stabled the team’s innings and posted 52 runs for the fifth wicket, however, Parveen was stumped by Luxmi Yadav off Lalita Sharma for 37 off 65 balls. Punjab mustered their innings on a mere total of 183 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. For Delhi, Lalita Sharma was the most successful bowler for claiming 5 for 36.

In reply, Delhi started their chase by losing the top five players for 52 in 16.5 overs. International player Reema Malhotra and Amita Sharma saved their day by collecting 53 runs for the sixth wicket in 12.4 overs before Amita was trapped in front by Parveen Khan for 21 off 36 balls. Reema Malhotra continued to play big along with new player Somi Yadav. The duo took the score to 185 and ensured a three-wicket win for Delhi. Reema Malhotra hogged the limelight and woman of the match award by slamming unbeaten 68 off 119 balls with three boundaries while Somi Yadav remained unbeaten on 27 off 29 balls with two boundaries. Delhi reached the winning target in 45.4 overs. For Punjab, Harpreet Kaur and Rajni Devi claimed two wickets each . — TNS

Inter-college cricket championship
Guntashveer steers SD College to victory

Chandigarh, September 21
A fine knock of 82 runs by opener Guntashveer led GGDSD College, Sector 32, to ensure a 167-run victory over DAV College, Hoshiarpur, during a match of the ongoing Inter-College Cricket Championship for men (A Division) at the campus grounds today.

After electing to bat first, GGDSD College scored a healthy total of 301 runs in allotted 40 overs. The team’s inning was studded with a quick-fire knock of 82 runs by Guntashveer Singh off 58 balls. He was equally supported by his crease partner Shubham, who chipped in an unbeaten knock of 62 runs.

Later, Abhijeet contributed 55 runs and Abhimanyu Singha scored 39 runs to take the team’s total over 300 mark. For Hoshiarpur side, Raman Dogra took the charge and claimed 2 for 45.

Chasing a good total, DAV bundled out on a mere total of 134 runs. Ateet (48 runs) and Manjinder (37 runs) remained the only main scorers for the visiting side.

For the bowling side, Amish Sidhu was the pick of the day for claiming 4 wickets for 6 runs whereas Jasinder claimed 2 wickets for 19 runs.
