Abohar
Man kills wife:
The police on Thursday rounded up Hanuman Soni of Lalgarh Jattan village in connection with the death of his wife Manju alias Babbal (38). Her brother Bhup Singh of Dhaban village (Sangria) alleged that she was beaten up and strangulated to death. Preliminary investigation revealed that Hanuman allegedly killed her last night since she had left the house for a couple of hours at 11.30 pm . A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

Jeep hits pedestrians, 1 dead: A speeding Jeep reportedly hit two pedestrians on the Seetogunno-Sukhchain link road in Abohar sub-division on Wednesday night. Vikram Delu, a readymade garments dealer, was killed whereas Ram Niwas was critically injured. He has been shifted to the Civil  Hospital here. A case has been registered.

Patwari held taking bribe:
A Vigilance Bureau team on Thursday nabbed a patwari in Tapa for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 for correcting father's name in mutation of a plot. DSP  (Vigilance) Devinder Singh said Paramjit Singh had allegedly demanded Rs 3,000 from Pankaj Kumar of Tapa for the task. However, the deal was finalised at Rs 2,000. Pankaj reported the matter to the Vigilance Bureau, which laid a  trap and caught the patwari red-handed.

2 students killed in mishap:
Two class XI students were killed when the bike they were riding collided with a car on Talwara Road. The deceased, Rajat Maini and Nikhil, were residents of Mukerian. The duo died on the spot after the bike collided head on with a Ford Figo car. Car driver Narinder Singh Malli of Mehmoodpur village in Batala has been booked. No arrest has been made so far.

Factory owner held for rape:
The owner of a garment factory here has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a Dalit woman working in his  factory, the police said. "Mandip Singh, the owner of Sharma Palace was arrested on Wednesday," said Balbir Singh, Station House Officer.

3-yr jail for peddler:
A resident of Ghosal village was sentenced to three years in jail by Additional District and Sessions Judge Harish Anand under the NDPS Act on Thursday. According to prosecution, Paramjit Singh was nabbed by the police from a bus stop at Ghanauri village two years ago and 25 kg of poppy husk was seized from his possession. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict.

Youths rob jeweller:
Two youths posing as police officials robbed a jeweller of 90-gm gold at Sarafa Bazaar on Wednesday. Chander Pal, owner of Paras Jewellers, came to the city to purchase gold. The youths stopped him and said they were cops. They checked his bags and stole the jewellery.

The Haryana Government has decided to provide compassionate appointment to a dependent of a martyr of armed forces or paramilitary forces of Haryana domicile who sacrificed their lives before January 1, 2014.

MDU to set up centres: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday said Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, will establish two regional centres at Faridabad and Nagina (Mewat). The decision was taken at the 176th meeting of the Academic Council of the university held on Thursday.

HAU gets best centre award: Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) has bagged the Best Centre Award for its contribution to research and development of rapeseed-mustard crops.

BJP wanted tie-up with HJC: Rao Inderjit: Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh on Thursday said the BJP had not intended to break the alliance with the HJC. Instead, the snapping of ties was of HJC chief Kuldeep Bisnoi’s making, he said. “The BJP was in favour of retaining the alliance, but Bishnoi did not understand the changed political scenario in the state,” he told the media here.

: The breaking up of the HJC-BJP alliance has come as a relief for the Kuldeep-Bishnoi-led party leaders who have been carrying out public contact programmes in their respective areas as they feared not getting the ticket in case the alliance continued. They are confident about getting the ticket.

Dowry death accused held:
The police have arrested Sunil of Bali Kutubpur village and his brother Anil for allegedly setting Sunil’s wife Reena on fire after pouring kerosene on her on August 21. She succumbed to her burn injuries at Government Women Medical College Hospital, Khanpur Kalan, yesterday.

Mine blast: Two soldiers injured
: Two soldiers were injured when a mine exploded on the Line of Control (LoC) in Sabjian area of Poonch district on Wednesday evening. During patrol, a mine exploded near the LoC in Sabjian area, causing injuries to two soldiers, a defence spokesperson said. The soldiers were identified as Lance Naik Ashok Kumar of the 40 Rashtriya Rifles and Havildar Chet Bahadur of the 5/4 Gukha Regiment. The incident took place near Makhyari Dhok in Sabjian. The injured soldiers were airlifted to the Northern Command Hospital in Udhampur.

Army rescues infant
: The 48 Rashtriya Rifles under the aegis of the Romeo Force came to the rescue of an eight-month-old in Tai Basti village of Mendhar tehsil here who felt unconscious after being administered contaminated water by his parents. Mohammad Islam was immediately shifted to an Army post by his parents Mohammad Sharief and Nazi Bibi. The Army doctors attended the boy on a very short notice and provided the necessary medication to the toddler. After the baby regained consciousness he was shifted to civil hospital under the supervision of the unit’s medical staff. Sources said the boy was responding well to the treatment at civil hospital and was out of danger. The family members of Islam and the villagers thanked the Army for timely help.
