Man run over by train, dies
Dera Bassi, August 26 The incident came to light this morning when someone informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) about a mutilated body lying on the railway track. A team of the GRP reached the spot and removed the body from the track. The deceased was identified as a driver with a local truck union. Immoral trafficking: Woman gets 3-yr jail
Mohali, August 26 The court of the Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge Jaswinder Sheemar sent Raj alias Rajpreet Kaur of Katani Kalan village in Ludhiana, to jail for three years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. Raj has been held guilty of forcing a minor girl into immoral trafficking. A case in this regard was registered on the complaint of the victim’s mother at the Phase 11 police station. In another case, the court has sent three accused, including a woman, to jail for three years in a case of abetment to suicide. The accused have been identified as Manpreet Kaur, Darshan Singh and Ragbir Singh. A case of abetment of suicide under Sections 306/34, IPC, was registered against the accused at the Kharar Sadar Police Station on March 6, 2012. |

Yograj’s friend gets bail in brawl case
Panchkula, August 26 Bhupinder was arrested by the police for his involvement in a group clash with neighbourer Ashanand, a former DSP of the Chandigarh Police, and his two sons - Sunil Narang and Sumit Narang - in Sector 2, on Sunday night. Yograj and Bhupinder were arrested by the police for their involvement in a brawl with Ashanand and his sons. A cross FIR was registered against them. While Yograj, Ashanand and his sons were released on bail, Bhupinder was remanded to judicial custody for a day, on Monday. Now, the case will come up for hearing in the court on September 8. Kuljeet Kaur, England-based NRI cousin of Yograj, has not moved a formal complaint against the Panchkula police to the British High Commission. She, however, has informed the commission about the role of the police in the case. Talking to The Tribune, Kuljeet complained that the police did not entertain her complaints. “No one listen to our plights. Even the police favoured the former DSP and his sons who abused, misbehaved and ripped our clothes,” she said. They used abusive language and tried to molest her daughter, she alleged while talking to mediapersons outside the courtroom yesterday. |

UT employee acquitted in bribe case
Chandigarh, August 26 The Court acquitted Amarjeet Singh, who was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 17,000 on October 12, 2009. The CBI had then received a complaint from LK Khurana, general secretary, Weight and Measures Repair Association, that Amarjit Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 20,000 for issuance of certain certificates to him. The deal was then settled for Rs 17,000. The CBI then laid a trap and Amarjit was allegedly caught red-handed from the department building in Phase II, Industrial Area. The defence counsel stated before the court that all allegations against Amarjeet were false and he was trying to malign the image and the money that exchanged hands was advance government fees that were meant to be paid for verifying instruments. |

Misplaced articles: Shree Shyam Packers & Movers penalised
Chandigarh, August 26 The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum directed the company to pay Rs 26,280 to the complainant towards the cost of missing articles of the consignment and Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony. Dheeraj Kumar Dubey, a resident of Dhanas, said that he was shifting from Gurgaon to Chandigarh and hired the services of the opposite party for transporting his motorcycle and other articles from Noida to Chandigarh. He paid of Rs 3,500 as advance to the opposite party and Rs 3,803 as the balance amount was to be paid at the time of delivery of the consignment. He alleged that the consignment was received by his mother at Chandigarh. At the time of receiving the consignment, the mother of the complainant allegedly requested the official to wait for some time, as she wanted to count and check the items properly, but he unloaded the consignment hurriedly on the pretext that everything was fine. Later, an endorsement was made by the official that one gas cylinder was missing, which would be handed over after three days. The balance of Rs.3,803 was also paid to the opposite party by the mother of the complainant. “The consignment was handled by the opposite party in a careless manner; all the seals were opened and 13 items valuing Rs 26,280 were found missing,” the complainant alleged. The complainant said that he immediately informed the opposite party about the damage and loss caused to him upon which, he was told that their employee would visits his house to assess the loss but nobody came.Nobody appeared on behalf of the opposite party to contest the complaint and the complaint was proceeded against ex parte. The act of the opposite party in not delivering the consignment, in safe and intact condition, to the complainant and thereafter, refusing to compensate him for the loss caused with regard to the missing articles, must have caused him a lot of mental and physical harassment.” |

Suspect rounded up in Rs 2-crore land fraud case
Chandigarh, August 26 Notably, Krispy, wife of Davinder Singh Gill, attempted to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills yesterday. She is recuperating at the hospital. She has levelled allegations of molestation against Punjab Police IG Gautam Cheema and one Ajay Chaudhary. Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti confirmed that the police had rounded up a person from the hospital, who came to meet Krispy. “We are verifying his credentials. We will arrest him after ascertaining his identity,” said SSP Bhatti, while indicating that the person in question might be Gulati, who was declared as a proclaimed offender, along with Gill and two other accused, in the case. Gulati is a partner of Davinder Gill in a real estate company - Sky Heights. The police said they had received several complaints of fraud against Gill and Gulati. Later, a person, claiming to be a senior official, took him along in his car. After a while, the police were seen chasing the vehicle, which was found parked at Max Hospital. |

Mishap: Car driver booked
Chandigarh, August 26 The police have booked Naveen Saini, driver of a Swift car, who had unintentionally pressed the corner of the spike barrier, which hit the victim. Naveen, who is a retired Air Force employee, was returning home after purchasing household items when the incident took place on August 23. The condition of Surinder is stable but he was only able to record his statement to the police today. The police said the incident was conveyed to the Wing Commander, Mukesh Bhardwaj, who ordered to lodge a police complaint. A case has been registered. — TNS |

Rs 18 lakh stolen from Hotel Park Plaza
Chandigarh, August 26 A businessman from Delhi, Simranjit Bakshi, who stayed at the hotel for four days and was one of the guests at the wedding, has complained to the police that the jewellery has been stolen from his room. He has added in the complaint that he suspects the theft to be a handiwork of the hotel staff. The police have lodged an FIR at the Sector 17 police station and have begun investigations. A total of 44 rooms were booked at the hotel for the wedding when the theft was reported. Simranjit Singh Bakshi, a resident of Rajouri Garden in New Delhi, stayed at Room Number 506 of the hotel. “I checked in at the hotel on August 15 and stayed for four days with my wife. The theft, in all likelihood occurred on August 16 when I along with my wife was leaving for the function and I last saw the pouch on the table at 8 pm. We had requested housekeeping staff to clean the room at that time. The jewellery was missing after that following which we lodged a complaint,” said Bakshi. As per the complaint, two diamond bangles, two gold bangles and two heavy gold kadas worth Rs 18 lakh have been stolen. The jewellery belonged to Simranjit Singh’s wife. “It was a disappointing experience. The hotel authorities did not cooperate with us at all and asked us to verify our luggage again and again,” he said. A senior official of the hotel, when contacted said that they were verifying facts and it was difficult to comment anything at this point of time. Bakshi has also requested the hotel to provide CCTV footage of the hotel and the names of the staff who cleaned his room. DSP Ashish Kapoor said they had registered a case of theft on the basis of the complaint and were investigating.
Past incidents
* In February 2013, a major theft was reported at the hotel in a very organised manner when a couple was invited for complimentary breakfast. When they returned they found the room ransacked and gold and diamond jewellery missing. The UT police crime branch had arrested two thieves for the crime. However, the police probe had failed to grill any hotel staff though it was clear that the theft could not have been possible without any insider’s involvement. The CCTVs of the hotel were also found to be switched off and the accused had free access to the hotel. *
In October 2012, a minor boy stole a bag containing shagun envelopes from the hotel. Nipun Kapoor, a resident of Sector 4, Panchkula, called the police when she found that the bag of shagun envelopes given by guests at her son’s wedding was stolen from the wedding venue. |

Day of draws at Air Force football meet
Chandigarh, August 26 With the Pool A match ending in a draw, both the teams have qualified for the semi-finals. The second match of the day between the Air Headquarters and the Eastern Air Command (EAC) also ended in a score-less draw. In the evening matches played by teams under Pool B, the Central Air Command (CAC) side played 2-2 draw against the Southern Air Command (SAC) while the Training Command (TC) played a goal-less draw against the Maintenance Command (MC). St Anne’s School cruise into semi-final
Chandigarh, August 26 Batting first, Chandigarh Baptist failed to face a fine bowling spell by Karanveer Singh, who claimed three wickets for seven runs and Shiva Gupta, who sent two batsman to the pavilion while conceding 12 runs. The team was bundled out for a mere 63 runs. Abhinav with his 27-run inning made the major contribution to the Chandigarh Baptist’s total. In reply, the St Anne’s side achieved the target in 11 overs while losing three wickets. Alam (21 runs) and Saksham Thakur (17 runs) remained unbeaten while for the bowling side, Zritik claimed a wicket for 13 runs. Mohali, August 26 In the 50-m freestyle boys (U-19) event, Mahesh of Patiala House, Amit of Ranjit House and Vishvajeet of Aitchison House claimed the top three spots while in 25-m breaststroke girls (U-19) category, Sanya of Tagore House, Kudrat of Ranjit House and Jasmine of Tagore House won the top three positions. In the 50-m freestyle girls (U-19), Mahima (Aitchison House) stood first, Karman (Tagore House) second and Khushi (Ranjit House) third. |
