National Insurance Co. fined
Chandigarh, August 24 The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the company to disburse the remaining insured amount of Rs 14,000 to the complainant being the insured value of the dead cow, pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for mental agony and harassment and Rs 5,000 as costs of litigation. Ranjit Singh, the complainant, alleged that he purchased 10 cows through Punjab National Bank which were insured with the opposite party. One of the cows, with insured value of Rs 50,000, died on February 20, 2013. The complainant said due information was given to the opposite party, the formalities were completed and all the documents were handed over to the investigator. However, the claim was allegedly settled at Rs 36,000 only and the amount was directly transferred to the loan account of the complainant without any intimation to him. In its written reply, the opposite party averred that the insurance policy was subject to terms and the claim was rightly settled at Rs 36,000, keeping in view the valuation report. “Surprisingly in his letter the investigator has not mentioned anywhere, in detail, as to how he reached the figure of Rs 36,000. There is also no mention of difference as observed by him between the milk yield of the dead cow with that of any other cow. “ |
