7-member gang of robbers busted
Ludhiana, August 20
With the arrest of seven youngsters, the city police have claimed to have busted a gang of robbers who were behind five sensational robberies in the city. The Commissioner of Police, Pramod Ban, said the busting of the gang would put an end to such incidents in the city.

School for Meritorious
Only six respond to final offer

Despite several attempts, the Education Department has failed to attract the required admissions to the Residential School for Meritorious Students. After the final offer, only six students applied for admission.

Date for filing VAT quarterly returns extended
Ludhiana, August 20
The Excise and Taxation Department has extended the last date for filing value added tax (VAT) quarterly return from August 20 to August 25. However, the dates for making payment remain the same. The date has been extended after the department received a number of representations from traders and chartered accountants in this regard.

Chhapar Chowki in-charge suspended
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 20
The Ludhiana (Rural) police has initiated action against three policemen of the Chhapar police chowki after allegations of dereliction of duty levelled against them. While the in charge of the chowki, Hardeep Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect, two others were sent to the Police Lines.

Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary celebrated
The Congress and various organisations and associations celebrated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Wednesday. The association of the terrorism-affected observed the day as ‘Sankalp Diwas’. The president of the association KK Bawa said Rajiv Gandhi made a commendable contribution to the making of modern India. “His contribution to the Panchayati Raj is commendable,” he said. The birth anniversary was also celebrated at the Congress Bhawan. The Congress leaders garlanded the photograph of the former Prime Minister and also distributed ladoos among those present. The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Urban Development Cell, under the leadership of Ramesh Joshi, also celebrated the birth anniversary. The Congress Sewa Dal Urban organised a programme on the occasion.

Coolers checked
Teams from the Health Department checked coolers in Dashmesh nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, near cheema colony, on Wednesday. Larvae of aedes aegypti were found on the occasion.

Awareness rally
The Hindu Sikh Jagriti Sena in association with the SDP School management held a rally to create awareness about dengue here on Wednesday. Students of SDP School took part in the rally in an enthusiastic manner. The management of the school and representatives from the sena made masses aware about the disease that is spread through mosquitoes. — TNS

Years on, garbage heap mounts
Doraha, August 20
A garbage heap — set up in the middle of the market road in Doraha — stares every passerby in the face. The stench-emitting waste with flies hovering over it has become an eyesore. Despite repeated requests by residents, shopkeepers, shoppers, pedestrians and visitors to clear the mess have fallen on deaf ears.

Theft incidents spread panic among residents

The increasing incidents of theft in rural areas of Jagraon have spread panic and fear among residents. In fact, the rural areas have witnessed a huge increase in the incidents of theft during the recent past and the residents are forced to spend sleepless nights due to a rise in such incidents in the villages.

BA-I: Seats still lying vacant

Though students make efforts to get admission to the Government College for Girls, the authorities deny admission to those who fail to make it to the cut-off list. It may sound strange that despite the competition between students, seats are still lying vacant in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) first-year course.

PCMS docs observe pen-down strike

The Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) Specialist Doctors’ Association and the PCMS (dental wing) today observed a pen-down strike from 11am to noon. The doctors wore black badges as a mark of protest and submitted a memorandum to the civil surgeon.

Club does its bit for addicts
Ludhiana, August 20
Taking an initiative to rehabilitate drug addicts, the Knitwear Club has offered employment to those who have shunned drugs and are now leading a normal life. Two former addicts are already undergoing training, after which they will get placements in one of the knitwear units registered with the club.

Cattle removed from house
Ludhiana, August 20
On the directions of the high court, a team of officials from the Municipal Corporation removed certain animals from a house in Gurdev Nagar today. As per information, there was a dispute among two brothers and one of them moved to the court with a complaint that his brother had kept animals in the house and was running a biogas plant violating the norms.

A 17-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in a room located in the Daresi area. The deceased has been identified as Shiv Charan of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
