Youth gets one-year in prison
Chandigarh, August 20 The court convicted Rohit, alias Jhingora of Sector 25, for sexually harassing a minor girl who is a student of Class VII. The convict has also been imposed a fine of Rs 2,500. The accused (21), was facing charges under Sections 354 354 a and 354 d of the IPC and the POCSO Act. An FIR was registered by the police after receiving complaint from the parents of the girl against the accused on February 20, 2014. According to the prosecution theory, the victim was returning home after attending school when the convict harassed her in Sector 38 as he came there on a motorcycle.The convict made the victim sit on his bike forcibly following which she raised the alarm. |

Graft: Bank manager sent to judicial custody
Mohali, August 20 The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Shiv Mohan Garg ordered the judicial remand of the manager, Surinder Garg. He was sent to the Ropar Jail. The court fixed September 3 as the next date of hearing. Earlier, Surinder was taken to the Civil Hospital here for a medical examination. The vigilance officials had nabbed Surinder Garg while, allegedly, accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh for sanctioning a house loan. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against him. Fraudster Devinder Gill produced in court The Mohali police brought alleged fraudster Devinder Gill from the Ambala jail on a production warrant here today. Gill, who had allegedly duped several police officials and their relatives on the pretext of providing them farmhouses on the outskirts of Chandigarh, was produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Shiv Mohan Garg . The court remanded him in police custody for one day. Earlier, he was taken for medical examination to the Civil Hospital. Gill was brought here in connection with an FIR registered against him at the Phase I police station. A Delhi resident Yashpal Gupta had made a complaint to the police that he had paid Rs 2 crore to the suspect for purchasing of a plot. The complainant was neither allotted a plot nor received any refund. The FIR had named Devinder Gill besides four others as accused. |

Advocate commits suicide in Sector 22
Chandigarh, August 20 The victim, Avneesh Kumar Thakur, also left behind a suicide note which stated that he was responsible for his death. Advocate Avneesh Kumar Thakur stayed in Mohali with his two children while his wife Manju stays in Sector 22. The couple was fighting a divorce case in the court. He came to his wife’s Manju’s residence and locked himself in the room. There after there was no response from him for quite some time, his relative broke open the door and found him unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPc. |

Three arrested for Sector 19 theft
Chandigarh, August 20 The police nabbed three persons Kamal Chander (25), Bhuvan (26) and Narinder Negi (54). Kamal Chander staying in Naya Gaon hails from Uttrakhand and is a son of a retired Army sepoy. The other two, Bhuvan and Narinder Negi, also hail from Uttarkhand. Three were working as cooks in the city and were friends as they hailed from the same town. They used to indulge in thefts and snatching. Dr Sachin Anand, a resident of Sector 19, had reported to the police that he and his family was out of station and on August 18, at about 12 midnight, when he returned home he found that the locks of the doors were broken and the house was ransacked. Anand said that two persons, including his domestic help Bhuvan and another person, were inside the house. Both tried to escape when Anand noticed them. Kamal Chander was nabbed while the Bhuvan managed to escape. A bag containing cash and a pearl set was recovered from his possession, but other jewellery and valuable articles were taken by other co-accused. Chander was handed over to the police, and the police procured his three-day remand. The SHO Sector 19, Punam Dilawari, with the help of the master technical cell, put the mobile phone of other co-accused on survellieance and arrested Bhuvan. He was arrested along with Narinder Negi. The police recovered jewellery from Bhuvan (26) and Narinder (54). Both possessed gold and diamond jewellery. During investigation, it was revealed that Bhuvan was a snatcher and had a previous case of snatching had been registered against him. |

Police arrest mother
Panchkula, August 20 The woman is a resident of the same village. On being questioned by the police, she confessed to have abandoned the girl. The police said as the child was born out of wedlock, the woman dumped her. She was in a relationship with a man residing in the same area, said the police. After registering a case against her at the Sector 5 police station, the police produced the woman before a local court, where she was remanded to judicial custody. Earlier, a police party got her medically examined at the Sector 6 Civil Hospital. The condition of the baby girl, who is under observation at the same hospital, has been reported to be improving. The doctor attending to her said she had developed chest infection, but was recovering fast. |

Thieves strike at P’kula house, decamp with cash, gadgets
Panchkula, August 20 The theft came to light when Ashok Kumar, owner of the house, returned on Wednesday morning. In a complaint to the police, Ashok Kumar, said he found that the lock of a door was broken. The thieves had ransacked the entire house, he said. They also cut opened a steel almirah, the complainant said. A laptop and some silver idols, silver coins and Rs 20,000 were also found missing from cupboards, the complaint stated. The police have registered a case of theft at the Sector 20 police station. |

Vivek High, YPS to clash for title
Mohali, August 20 In the semifinal of boys (under-16) category, Vivek High School outclassed The Millennium School 26 -10. The host gripped the match from the beginning and played a attacking game. In the first half, the team of Vivek High maintained a 13-6 lead against their rivals while in the second half, the winning side maintained the momentum and posted a 26-10 victory over the rivals. For winning side, Anmol Kiran Singh and Prabhmehar Singh scripted the win chipping in 11 and 12 baskets, respectively. In the second semifinal match, Yadvindra Public School defeated St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, to move in the final of the championship. The team registered a 47-27 victory over their rivals. Till half time, the Yadvindra Public School maintained the lead 21-12. For winning side, Jaskiran Singh alone netted 22 baskets to lead the team to victory. In the girls’ (U-14) category, cagers of St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, beat Vivek High School, Mohali, 24-18. In the first half, the winning side won 08-06 over the rivals. However, after the water break, the winning side collectively started pumping in well and extended the lead to 24-18. Navjot scored 14 points to ensure her team’s win. In the second match, Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, beat Shishu Niketan School with a margin of 28 points. Mankirat collected 24 points in her team’s 36-08 points win over the opponents. In the boys’ (unde-14) category, Vivek High School beat The Millennium School, 26 -11. Balraj emerged as the star performer with contributing 12 baskets. Earlier, till half time, Vivek High School maintained a 14- 6 points lead. In the girls’ (U-16), eves of Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, trounced Manav Mangal Smart School, 27-11. Yadvindra Public School scored 18 points in first half against nil from Manav Mangal School. Khushnaaz Kaur collected 19 points for the winning team. |
St Kabir School beat Chandigarh Baptist
Chandigarh, August 20 In the first match, riding high on a brilliant batting performance by opening duo Ujjwal and Shivang, St Kabir School defeated Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 44, by 29 runs. After electing to bat first, the winning side posted 139 runs for 6 wickets in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Opening pair Ujjwal and Shivang maintained a steady pace and provided the team a good start. Ujjwal (45 runs) and Shivang (32 runs) were the main scorers for the team. For bowling side, Abninav did most of the damage and claimed 3 for 10 while his counterpart Ritik claimed 2 for 19. Chasing the target, Chandigarh Baptist School failed to achieve the target and bundled out on 110 runs in 18.5 overs. Chandigarh, August 20 Skating championship Three skaters of the school also won laurels in the recently concluded 8th North Zone Roller Skating Championship, held at Bhawana (New Delhi). Haren Choudhary of Class Vth won silver in rink race II and bronze in rink race I in boys’ (U-12) category. Nanki Sandhu of Class Vth (Green) bagged one silver in rink race II and two bronze in rink race II and III, respectively, in open (between 8 to 10 years) category. Saupin’s School beat DPS, enter final
Chandigarh, August 20 In the semifinal match, Saupin’s-32 defeated DPS Cricket Academy by 7 runs. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Saupin’s batting line-up posted a healthy total of 156 runs in 25 overs with the loss of 8 wickets. The team’s total was supported by a fine 51 runs contribution by Atul off 49 balls. He was equally supported by Manav, who contributed 40 off 38 balls. Later, Aryan and Kanishka pushed the score further with their quick fire knock of 12 off 10 balls including a six and 16 off 10 including three boundaries, respectively. For bowling side Anshul claimed a five wicket haul. While chasing the target, DPS (A-team) side scored 149 runs in the allotted slot of 25 overs. Chandigarh, August 20 The championship will be conducted in the boys’ sub-junior (U- 15) category and also in the junior boys and girls (U-17) category. The interested teams are advised to confirm their participation before August 28 (1 pm), in written, with the principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, (for boys) and principal, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, (for girls). The fixtures of the competition will be drawn on August 28 (3pm) at DEO office and the same can be collected on August 29 (10 am). 76-year-old wins veterans’ race
Chandigarh, August 20 In this meet, 76-years old Chajju Ram of Dhanola village won first prize in veterans’ race and bagged a cash prize of Rs 700 while 66-years-old Harbhajan Singh from Samrala bagged the second prize and a cash award of Rs 400. Mukhtiar Singh, 67-years-old, from Patiala finished third and was awarded with Rs 300. Kaka Singh, A kabbadi player, of Dhanas village was awarded with the best raider trophy along with a cash award Rs1,100 while Shri Jat of Ballomajra was awarded with best locker award along with Rs1,100. Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Union Railway Minister, distributed the prizes among the winners while Mayor HC Kalyan inaugurated the event. |
