Girl’s death: Youth held on charge of abetting suicide
Barwala, August 19 A case of abetment to suicide was registered against the youth, Sandeep Kumar alias Kalia, and his accomplice Bunty, both residents of the same village, on a complaint of Ranjit Singh, father of the deceased, Amarjit Kaur, last night. ASI Om Prakash, in charge, Barwala police post, said Sandeep was arrested from the town this morning while Bunty was still absconding. The ASI said Amarjit, a student of Class IX, had committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance after being harassed by some youths of her locality. The police is investigating the case to identify other accomplices of Sandeep who were involved in the crime. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination at Civil Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. Amarjit was a meritorious student and had scored 95 per cent marks in the Class X examinations in the previous session, her kin said. The state government had honoured her with a cash award during a function on the Independence Day.

Hospital shows it doesn’t care
Kurali, August 19 Surprisingly, the authorities at the hospital denied that any such patient was admitted there. The Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Dr Rakesh Singla, said he was out of town and officiating SMO Dr BK Arora said there was no report of any such patient being admitted last week to the hospital. Shamsher Singh, the caretaker of Prabh Asra, a home for destitute at Padiala village near Kurali, said the woman along with her child was brought to them today by Mukhtiar Kaur, a resident of Khairabad village in Ropar district. Mukhtiar Kaur said that she noticed the woman writhing in labour pains at the Ropar Civil Hospital, and the staff refused to admit her because there was no attendant with her. She took the responsibility of the woman, following which the staff at the hospital agreed to admit her, and there she gave birth to a boy baby on August 14, said Mukhtiar Kaur. The hospital authorities discharged her on August 16. The victim who is unable to converse said that she was staying at Gurdwara Bhattha Sahib near Ropar town. “When I took her to the gurdwara, the staff deputed there did not allow her to stay there with the newly born,” said Mukhtiar Kaur. After two days, I came to know about Prabh Asra following which I got her admitted there. District Social Security Officer Anshu Thakur said under such circumstances it was the duty of the hospital authorities to inform her. The mother and the child were supposed to be sent to the Nari Niketan at Amritsar through the district administration, she said.

High Court holds admission of 47 dental students valid
Chandigarh, August 19 Acting on two petitions, Justice K Kannan made it clear that the students’ appearance in and qualifying the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) was of no relevance. None of the students admitted to the college had secured the marks prescribed in the NEET conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Taking up the matter, Justice Kannan said: “The petitioners, whether they had appeared in the NEET or not, or whether they qualified it or not would all be taken to be eligible to secure an admission, unless they lacked the basic qualification of not having passed Class XII examinations. I will, therefore, hold that the petitioners who have been admitted without reference to the notification in the NEET must be taken as validly admitted.” The judgement came on petitions filed by Teekay Sharma and other petitioner students and Desh Bhagat Dental College. It had challenged respondent Baba Farid University’s refusal to recognise admission granted to students on September 30, 2013. The letter directing the petitioner college to strike off names of all candidates alleged to have been wrongly selected was also challenged. Justice Kannan said the decision of the university and the communication made on November 19, 2013, took an extreme position that was incompatible with the situation emerging from the fact that the notification stating the NEET requirement was quashed by the Supreme Court. “It takes the position that since the college had admitted candidates who had not qualified the NEET, the admission to all candidates could not be regularised. It was surely an unworkable and exigent stand that had precipitated the action through a writ petition… The admissions made and the continuance of the students in the college shall be directed as regular admissions and the impugned notice of the university to the petitioner college is quashed,” ruled the court.

Chandigarh, August 19 Balbir Singh, a resident of Sector 35, alleged that he booked two railway tickets for going to Kolkata along with his family. The tickets were from Delhi to Patna and then from Patna to Kolkata.The complainant and his family members boarded the train from Patna and while the train was on its way to Kolkata, he found that his two suitcases had been stolen. The complainant tried to pull the chain but the train did not stop even on the pulling of the chain. On the next station, the complainant reported the matter to the Government Railway Police, but they asked to report the matter to the Government Railway Police Station, Jhajha, where the luggage was stolen. The complainant reported the matter to the police station, Jhajha, and a case was registered. It has been contended that the suitcases of the complainant were containing some gold, cash and clothes and the total loss amounted to Rs1,00,000. The complainant contacted the opposite party many times but the latter did not redress his grievance. The opposite party in its reply stated, “The complainant had neither booked the suit cases nor had paid any charges for taking the same with him. Under Section 100 of the Railways Act, 1989, the Railways was not responsible for the loss”. “We deem it proper to award an amount of Rs.10,000 only to the complainant, as compensation,” the forum ruled.

Mohali, August 19 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mohali, sent the accused, Gurmit Kaur alias Geetu, a resident of Sunny Enclave, Kharar, and her driver Jatinder Singh alias Aman, to jail for seven years for forcing the victim into the flesh trade. A case in this regard was registered on August 31, 2012, at the Mataur Police Station under Sections 376, IPC, and Sections 3,4,5,6 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. In her complaint, the victim had alleged that she was working as a domestic help in Gurmit’s house. Later, she started sending her to various persons for flesh trade.

Bank manager caught taking bribe in Mohali
Mohali, August 19 The bureau Superintendent of Police Hargobind Singh said that the accused, Surinder Garg, was the manager in Cooperative Bank, Sherpura, of Sangrur district. “In the case, the complainant Amarjit Singh, a resident of Sangrur, approached us and alleged that he had applied for a house loan of Rs 10 lakh in the bank. Garg was demanding Rs one lakh for sanctioning it”, said SP Hargobind Singh. He said that the vigilance team today laid a trap and nabbed Garg red handed while accepting the bribe. A case under appropriate sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Vigilance police station. The accused will be produced before the court tomorrow. — TNS

Chandigarh, August 19 Dr Sachin Anand, a Sector 19 resident, alleged that his domestic help Bhuwan and his associate Kamal Chander, a resident of Naya Gaon, Mohali, stole gold and silver jewellery, one pearl set and some cash from his house. Accused Kamal Chander has been arrested in this case. The police said efforts are on to trace Bhuwan.The have started probing the case.

Circle kabaddi a hit among students
Chandigarh, August 19 Circle kabaddi, a popular sport of Punjab, is attracting Chandigarh youths through its mix of power, stamina and technique. No wonder, these days students like to sit on the sidelines of the circle’s boundary to watch players almost of their age groups grappling with each other to attain points. Watching these players live in action is attracting the students to adopt kabaddi as their favourite sport. “It’s a tough game. It is not easy to grab your opponent to claim a point. It’s amazing that these players play under such tough conditions,” said Kamalpreet, a Class IX student. Karan Vashishat, another student, said: “Watching kabaddi is always exciting. However, witnessing it live remained a wonderful and encouraging experience. I will surely try my hands in kabaddi to get a good physique”. Girl students and teachers are also preferring to spend their free time watching young players in action. “It is not an easy game. These children are so courageous at such a small age. They are becoming role models for students of our school. I see a bright future for them in sports,” said Manjit Khurana, a teacher. For the first time, the UT Education Department is getting a good response in all three categories of the ongoing inter-school kabaddi championship. Assn to hold badminton trials from Aug 23
Chandigarh, August 19 In the U-13 age group, players born on or after January 1, 2002, and in the U-15 age group, players born on after January 1, 2000, are eligible to take part in the trials. The players, eligible to participate, should report for trials on August 23 at 9 AM with a recommendation letter from the head of their respective coaching centres. The selection team will participate in the sub-junior badminton nationals to be held at Rohtak from September 1 to 7. The probables’ squad will be selected on the basis of trial matches for participation, while the final selection will be performed on the basis of players’ performance in the coaching camp. Also, a player should carry the Badminton Association of India (BAI) identification card.
