The UT is again looking for a fresh design for bus queue shelters in the city. After adopting three different designs over the years, with the latest ones (stainless steel structure) costing around Rs 13 lakh each, the UT is now scouring for a better design for another 80 bus queue shelters to come up in different parts of the city.

New technique to restore blood flow in blocked peripheral arteries

Patients, including diabetics, can now find relief from high costs and frequent incision to restore blood flow in blocked arteries in leg and other parts of the body. A new technique, drug-eluting balloon, has been introduced for the purpose, which surpasses stents in removing blockage.

45-yr-old labourer electrocuted in Mohali

A labourer got electrocuted at an under-construction house in Sector 82, here today. The victim has been identified as Raksheshwar Paswan (45), a resident of Sarsa, Bihar.

Prof AK Grover, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, exchanges documents with Prof Barney Glover, Vice-Chancellor, University of Western Sydney, on Monday The University of Western Sydney (UWS), Australia, Vice-Chancellor Prof Barney Glover today said the UWS and Panjab University, Chandigarh, would be benefited with the signing of an MoU as there were a number of areas of mutual interests and both universities had similar strengths. Both the universities signed a memorandum of understanding today and would set up a subcommittee to follow it up.

Chandigarh: Prof Peter Clift, eminent geologist and professor of Petroleum Geology, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Louisiana State University (United States), on Monday delivered a talk on origin of monsoon and Himalayan Uplift at the Department of Geology, Panjab University. Prof Clift spoke on the topic of the Asian monsoon and its links to Cenozoic Orogenesis and global climate change.

Upgraded govt schools sans infrastructure

The old building of Government Senior Secondary School at Dera Bassi is in bad shape. Although the Punjab Government has upgraded three Government High Schools of the sub-division yet the educational institutions do not have adequate infrastructure to accommodate students and teachers as well.
Moreover, it has been more than a month now that the schools have been upgraded but the government is yet to recruit staff against sanctioned posts of principals, lectures and clerks in these schools.

Police fail to nail mining mafia

The district police seem to have bowed before the mining mafia as no efforts were made to nab the henchmen, who attacked a police party that raided Bahaura village to stop illegal sand-quarrying on the Ghaggar river bed on Friday late night, even after three days of the incident.

A 22-year-old youth was crushed to death under a truck on a link road in Samgoli village near here, last night. The deceased, Mohan Singh, was returning home on his motorcycle from Dera Bassi when a truck heading from the opposite direction collided with his bike killing him on the spot.

The district police have arrested a Barwala resident, for his alleged involvement in a gang war involving members of two notorious gangs, at a barber’s shop on August 7. A Zirakpur-based youth was killed in the gang war between WiFi gang and BR gang in Barara village near Ambala.

The CBI today filed a chargesheet in the court of Special CBI Judge Vimal Kumar against Superintending Engineer (SE) of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department (PWSSD) of Punjab, Nirmal Kumar Dheer. Dheer is facing charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Injured ex-DGHS battles for life; biker booked for rash driving

The police today booked the motorcyclist, who hit a former Director-General, Health Services (DGHS), yesterday, for rash and negligent driving. The former DHS, Dr SK Sharma (88), was critically injured in the mishap and is battling for life.

Golf Club told to clear dues in 15 days or face action

The UT Estate Office today issued the final notice to the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) asking it to deposit 50 per cent of the outstanding lease rent, around Rs 4.30 crore, for the last six years. In the event of non-payment, the club will have to face action.
