SGPC flays attack on US Sikh 
:SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar has condemned the alleged racial attack on a 29-year-old Sikh man, Sandeep Singh, in the US. Makkar urged Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to intervene in the matter. The driver of a pickup truck had allegedly hurled racist remarks on Sandeep before hitting him with his vehicle. The SGPC chief asked the Sikh organisations overseas to take up the matter with their respective governments.

2 killed in accident:
Rajveer Kaur (16) of Dhaban Jhalar village and her maternal uncle Hardeep Singh (21) of Chak 4DBN village were killed after the motorcycle they were riding on was reportedly hit by an unidentified vehicle on the Sriganganagar-Suratgarh stretch of National Highway 62. The accident occurred on Saturday night.

Man beats couple, booked:A truck driver of Jajjal village was booked for allegedly beating a couple for dumping cow dung in the open. In her complaint to the police, Rajwinder Kaur said her neighbour Sukhpal Singh had attacked her and her husband.

2 booked for theft:The police on Sunday booked a woman and another man for theft and adultery. In his complaint to the police, Bikkar Singh of Bhagi Wander village said his wife in connivance with another man tried to poison him. He also alleged the accused also stole jewellery from his house. The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Kaur and Surjeet Ram of Bhagi Wander village. No arrests have been made so far.

Man held with illicit liquor:Lachhman Singh of Phllewala village was booked for carrying 10 bottles of illicit countrymade liquor. The police said Lachhman was a habitual offender and released on bail. Further investigation is on.

Phoolka's strategy against drugs:HS Phoolka, senior advocate and Aam Aadmi Party leader, on Sunday proposed to follow a three-pronged strategy to tackle the menace of drugs across Punjab. Inaugurating a seminar on drug de-addiction, he suggested: rehabilitation of all drug addicts so that they can lead a respectable life; detection of early symptoms at entry level.

Booked for fraud:
The Mandi Gobindgarh police have registered a case against a number of persons, including an industrialist, a bank manager and a lawyer, for allegedly committing a fraud worth Rs.1.14 crore with Bank of Baroda in connivance with each other. Bank authorities alleged industrialist Krishan Lal Sahni took loan worth Rs 1.14 crore by submitting fake documents in connivance with bank and other officials.

4 booked in rape case:
A Dalit girl was allegedly raped by her employer and others here on July 29. The victim was admitted to the local Civil Hospital with multiple injuries. She alleged she was drugged by her employer Mandip, who along with others raped her. She also named Kuldip, Raman and Baba in the case. Balbir Singh, SHO, said they had booked Mandip and his aides, but they would arrest them after an inquiry.

Drug peddlers arrested:The Rawalpindi police have arrested two drugs peddlers, identified as Gurpreet Singh (alias Gopi) of Malikpur village and Phumman Singh of Duggan village and seized 5.4 kg puppy husk from their possession.

16-yr-old commits suicide:
A 16-year-old boy from Sunam, Piyush Arora, on Sunday allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a passenger train near Chhajli village near Sunam. General Railway Police Station House Officer Satinder Kumar said the deceased, a student of Class XI, was reportedly in stress due to his studies. He said the police had initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda will lay the foundation stone of a teaching block and a girls’ hostel in Chaudhary Devi Lal University on Monday. This was stated by Vice-Chancellor Radhe Shyam Sharma.

PO arrested:The police on Saturday arrested Kanwar Singh of Badwasni village, who was declared a proclaimed offender by the CBI court in Chandigarh and carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. DSP Darshan Lal Malik said Kanwar was on Sunday produced in the court.

One dies as car rolls down hill:
One person died today near Padhar when a car (DL 2 GAD) driven by him rolled down a hill. The police said Amit Bhatia of New Delhi died in the accident and three others travelling with him were injured.

City school conducts Rakhi-making activity
: The students of Saint Mary’s Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School conducted a Rakhi-making activity on the campus here. The members of the eco club of the school yesterday made Rakhis and tied them on trees, conveying the message of environment preservation. They also pledged to take care of the trees.

Fire damages PDD workshop
: Fire damaged a workshop of the Power Development Department (PDD) in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, the police said today. A police spokesman said the fire broke out in the PDD workshop resulting in its damage. The fire was brought under control by fire tenders.
