Police set to rein in illegal autos 
Ludhiana, August 3
In view of rising crime involving auto-rickshaws, the city traffic police have come up with a plan to eradicate illegal auto-rickshaws from the city. Now, all passenger auto-rickshaws will be registered with the traffic police at Sanjh Kendras.

Tomato prices continue to soar
Ludhiana, August 3
Tomato prices continue to remain high at Rs 80 per kg in the retail markets due to short supply. “The delayed monsoon has resulted in poor supply of tomatoes. We hope the rates will come down by the end of this month,” said the owner of a vegetable and fruit shop at Aggar Nagar.

There seems to be no end to the wait of 114 allottees of residential plots in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Colony, developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT). After moving all quarters concerned with no positive response, the hapless allottees have now sought intervention of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal in the matter.

Frequent transfers of government officers in different departments are not only affecting the routine administrative functioning but also giving a tough time to employees and visitors. However, a few officers, who were frequently transferred recently, are not all that unhappy as they got weeks’ leave in this hot and humid weather. An officer gets one-week joining leave in case of transfer.



Snake-bite incidents on the rise; 7 cases reported at Civil Hospital in a week 
Ludhiana, August 3
With the onset of the monsoon, the incidents of snake bite in and around the city are on the rise. Seven cases of snake bite have been reported at the Civil Hospital while other hospitals are also receiving such cases daily. The staff of Ambulance 108 said they had ferried many victims of snake bite to the hospital.

Much to the disappointment of commuters, the work of widening road at National Highway 1 is going on at a snail’s pace. The month of March, next year, has been set as the deadline for the completion of the work. The authorities are, however, in no hurry to ease the trouble of commuters anytime soon.

Dugri school students send love bands to soldiers
Ludhiana: BCM School, Dugri, became a part of the nationwide ‘Bharat Raksha Parv’ organised by a national Hindi daily newspaper. The students of Classes VI-X zealfully prepared Rakhis, greeting cards and posters. The handicraft and items made by children will be delivered to soldiers on the Siliguri border through a special truck, ‘Raksha Rath’, on the eve of Raksha Bandhan. School principal Dr Vandna Shahi remarked, “Communal harmony is an essential requirement of the society today.”

Increase in ESI ceiling limit put off

Two more murder accused arrested

Two more persons were arrested in connection with the murder of Jaspreet Singh Bawa. The accused, identified as Harish Kumar and Shelly, were arrested this evening.
