Chandigarh Overseas Private Limited was told to refund Rs 10 lakh and pay Rs 50,000 compensation for the mental agony caused due to delay in possession of residential flat to a city-based complainant. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the company to also pay Rs 5,000 to the complainant towards the costs of litigation.

Munish Jindal, the complainant, alleged that under the “name & style of Design and Insignia of Industrial Knowledge (Fashion Technology) Park”, Sector 90, Mohali, launched by the opposite party, he booked a residential unit on May 2, 2013. The buyer development agreement was also executed between the parties.

The complainant paid an amount of Rs 10 lakh to the opposite party. The complainant alleged that he handed over all necessary documents for getting the flat financed from an authorised national bank. However, the complainant was constrained to personally visit the construction site to confirm the actual status of construction, but he was shocked to find that no construction work was carried out on the construction site.

“Hence, this complaint was filed alleging deficiency in service and unfair trade practice on the part of the opposite party,” the complainant stated.

The opposite party did not contest the complainant and never showed up. “The assertions of the complainant have gone unrebutted and uncontroverted. As such, the same are accepted as correct and the deficiency in service and unfair trade practice on the part of opposite party is proved,” the forum ruled.

Two arrested for harassing girl at PU

The UT police today arrested two persons for allegedly harassing and threatening a girl student of Panjab University on the campus. The suspects—Vikas Rathi and Jatinder, both residents of Sonipat and former students of the university—were allegedly in an inebriated state during the incident.

The police said Rathi, who is an advocate, came to the campus in a car (HR-10-T-0007), along with Jatinder, and passed lewd comments at the girl and even threatened her near Gandhi Bhawan. They allegedly assaulted her male friend, who was accompanying her.

The suspects were produced in court and remanded in custody.

Two booked for cheating

The UT police have booked two persons for allegedly cheating a Sector-40 resident of Rs 4.70 lakh on pretext of getting registration certificates prepared for his two cars.

The suspects have been identified as Mahesh Kapoor and Jagsir Singh, alias Jaggi, both residents of Dhakauli. Jagsir Singh has been arrested.

In his complaint, Surinder Bansal told the police that he had gone to the Sector 42-based Registration and Licensing Authority office to get the RC made for his newly purchased Audi Q7. He said there he met the duo who assured of helping him. The victim gave them Rs 4 lakh and also asked them to help him in getting the RC prepared for the Innova car belonging to his bother-in-law, for which he reportedly paid them Rs 70,000.

The complainant said the duo neither fulfilled their part of the deal nor returned the money and documents of both cars.

Thrashed by ASI, alleges rape victim

A rape victim alleged that an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) posted with the Sector 20 police station thrashed and threatened here to take the case back. Following the complaint, an ACP level enquiry has been ordered in the matter.

The victim through an NGO had submitted a complaint against eight persons including a woman. She said a woman had recommended the victim to a person who allegedly held her hostage and raped her on the pretext of job. The widow said she was held hostage for over a month and continuously raped. When she told the woman that she would complain to the police, the victim was allegedly beaten up by her.

2 booked for assaulting policeman

The UT police booked two persons for allegedly assaulting a traffic policeman at a barrier. The accused have been identified as Bhramjit Singh, a resident of Sector 7, and Jasbir Singh, a resident of Hallo Majra.

In his complaint, sub-inspector of traffic police Jaidev alleged that the accused were stopped at a barrier laid on the road dividing Sectors 21 and 22. They misbehaved with the complainant and allegedly manhandled him.A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station. — TNS

Parth, Nandini bag top honours

Parth bagged the overall trophy of best swimmer in the (U-8) boys’ category while Nandini Singh bagged the same award in the girls category during the concluding day of the Chandigarh State Sub-Junior, Junior, Senior Swimming Championship organised by Adhoc Selection Committee (Swimming) with the assistance of the Tricity Swimmers Welfare Society at the swimming pool of Panjab University today.

In the (U-10) boys event, Rishi Nayyar bagged the best swimmer title whereas Manisvini claimed the top honour in the girls event of the same category. In the (U-12) boys and girls category, Asav Kumar and Preena Kaur, respectively, claimed the top award whereas in the (U-14) boys and girls event, Samar Toor and Saumya Nayyar were adjudged as the best swimmers of the category. Tejinder Singh won the (U-17) boys overall trophy while Chahat Arora was named as the best swimmers in the girls category.

Meanwhile, in the men’s and women’s section, Mridul Punia and Chahat Arora claimed the titles, respectively.

Kudos XI beat Lawyers XI by 12 runs

Kudos XI registered 12-run win over Lawyers XI in a match of the 2nd Corporate Cricket Cup being organised by Professional Cricket Club here today. After electing to bat first, the winning side posted a healthy total of 158 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs with Ravi Rana (45 off 27) and Rajiv (28 off 21) scoring a major share.

For the bowling side, Raman hogged the limelight by claiming 3 for 19 while Rajat claimed 2 for 17. In reply, the losing side, posted 146 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs with Sandeep (48 off 37), Nitin (26 off 18) and Satyawan (24 off 18) contributing the major share. For Kudos XI, Kamal claimed 1 for 18 while Ravi Rana took 1 for 4.

In the second match, Chandigarh Group of Hotels defeated Infosys XI by 5 runs. The winning side while batting first posted 149 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. Aadil guided the team to achieve a healthy total by contributing 48 off 47. He was equally supported by Rajbeer, who scored 44 off 29, and Abhilash, who scored 25 off 11. For the bowling side, Anuj claimed 3 for 21. In reply, Infosys could manage to score 144 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Anirudh (52 off 47) and Raghav (47 off 37) contributed a lion’s share. For the bowling side, Abhilash (3 for 19) and Sheetal (3 for 32) claimed three wickets each.

Hansika, Rahat storm into top 8

Fifth seed Hansika had a tough day against CHART trainee Nikita Kharangra in a pre-quarterfinal match of the girls’ singles category of the ongoing CLTA-AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament being held at the tennis courts of CLTA Sector 10 here today.

Braking the ice, Hansika overpowered her opponent Nikita Kharangra 4-1 in the initial set. However, in the next set Hansika faced some resistance from Nikita and lost 4-5 (7). Later, in the tie-breaker, Hansika pumped her best and at every shot Nikita replied back strongly but she lost the match 9-7.

In another well settled match of the same category, CLTA trainee Rahat Mangat upset 8th seed CHART trainee Princy Panchal. Rahat won the final set in a tie-breaker 14-12. Earlier, Rahat lost the first set but bounced back in second 4-1. In another three setter match, Smera Mehta defeated Aashna Sharma 2-4, 4-1 and 7-4 while unseeded Riya upset 2nd seed Tanya Batra in a one-sided match 4-0 and 4-2.

In the boys’ singles, CHART trainee top seed Vikrant Dahiya and 2nd seed CHART trainee Digvijay Pratap moved to quarterfinals. Vikrant defeated Neeraj Yashpaul in straight sets 4-1 and 4-0 while 2nd seed Digvijay Digvijay Pratap beat Savneet Singh Bajwa 4-0 and 4-0. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played on Monday.
