ETT teachers stage dharna in front of MLA’s office

Dera Bassi, July 31
Scores of elementary trained teachers (ETT) today held a dharna in front of the office of Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma in protest against the Punjab Government for not accepting their pending demand.

The protesters, including women, assembled under the overbridge, right in front of the office of the MLA, and staged a dharna for almost six hours. They raised anti-government slogans and criticised the MLA for turning a deaf ear to their demand of bringing them under the Education Department.

Addressing the protesters, Shamsher Singh, the president of Shiksha Provider Union, Mohali, claimed that more than 13,000 ETT teachers have been providing education to over 6 lakh students in 5,752 schools run by zila parishads and municipal councils for the past eight years.

He claimed that before the Assembly elections in the state, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister had assured them to bring their services under the Education Department but it was not done so far.

The protesters said they would intensify their agitation in case their demand was not met.

Man gets 5-year jail in kidnapping case

Chandigarh, July 31
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anshu Shukla today sentenced a man to five years rigorous imprisonment in a kidnapping case.

The court sentenced Izhar Alam, a resident of Hallo Majra, to five years and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him.The case was registered in June last year when the parents of a 16-year-old girl had complained to the police about the accused. The girl’s parents had alleged that Izhar, a resident of Hallo Majra had kidnapped their daughter .The police had recovered the girl from Delhi and arrested the accused. — TNS

Graft: Estate Office Inspector gets 3 years in jail

Chandigarh, July 31
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazar Singh today sentenced an Inspector of the UT Estate Office and a civilian to three years imprisonment in a corruption case. 

The Vigilance Cell of the UT police had arrested Inspector Harjit Singh of the Estate Office and a person, Murgashan. Both the convicts have also been fined Rs 6,000 each.— TNS

Chargesheet filed against naib court

Chandigarh, July 31
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed a chargesheet against a UT police constable who was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000. The chargesheet was filed in the court of CBI Special Judge Vimal Kumar.

The accused Balraj, holding the post of naib court, at the Sector 43 district courts, was arrested from the corridor outside Courtroom Number 14, during a trap on April 6 this year.On April 4, a resident of Milk Colony, Dhanas, Rohani, had complained to the CBI that Balraj was demanding Rs 5,000 as bribe to help him get bail in a case of voluntarily causing hurt registered at the Sector 11 police station.Non-bailable warrants had been issued against Rohani, after he had stopped appearing before the court.The CBI registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and then caught the accused.

PSPCL penalised for harassing consumer

The Mohali Permanent Lok Adalat has issued orders to initiate disciplinary action against certain officials of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), Patiala, responsible for harassing Baltana-based consumer Aslam Khan, due to their lackadaisical and careless attitude.

The Punjab State Power Corporation has also been directed by the court to pay Rs 5,000 as costs of litigation to the complainant.

The court, headed by Jagroop Singh Mahal, gave relief to Aslam Khan, who accused the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd of overcharging him by continuously sending him bills even after he complained of installation of a faulty meter at his residence.

Aslam Khan complained that his electric meter had burnt on July 16, 2010, and a new meter was installed at his house on September 27, 2010. But it was also faulty. After the removal of the faulty meter, the PSPCL continued to send him bills, till installation of another meter on August 9, 2011.

Khan then filed the application for refund of the extra amount charged from him.

The court has directed the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd to issue revised bills to him and refund the excess amount, if any, received by them.

The court also directed the authorities concerned to take disciplinary action against the officers, who removed the defective meter from the premises of Aslam Khan but did not seal it as per the rules.

United India Insurance fined for deficient service

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chandigarh, has directed United India Insurance Company Limited to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation to a Nayagaon resident for deficiency in service. Further, the company has been directed to pay Rs 7,000 as cost of litigation.

The complainant, Saleena Rani, had alleged that her Tata Indigo ECS (LX TC 111) car was stolen from outside a guest house in Delhi on May 5, 2012. A case in this regard was also registered. She claimed that she lodged a claim against the stolen vehicle, which was repudiated by the insurance company even as all relevant documents were supplied to it.

The insurance company submitted that the vehicle was not registered with any Registering Authority within one month of its purchase, which was in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act.

However, the forum penalised the insurance company, which has also been told to pay Rs 4.99 lakh to the Tata Motors Finance Limited as the vehicle was hypothecated to it.

One arrested from Moga

The UT police have arrested one of the accused in the case of attack on a student living in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Sector 22 and then making an objectionable video of him last month.

The accused, identified as Jaswinder Singh, was arrested from Moga. He was produced in a court and has been sent to two-day police remand. The police had sought five-day remand of the accused so as to arrest other accused, Gurcharan Singh, alias Rinku, and Sukhpal Singh Gosha, in the case.

On June 22, Jaswinder along with Rinku and Gosha had thrashed a youth, Harpinder Singh, who lived as a PG in Sector 22 here. Harpinder had reported that these three men, along with other two, had barged into his place, attacked him with a baseball bat and shot an objectionable video.

Last month, Sukhdev Singh Ghaccha and Inderjeet Singh, both said to be wanted criminals, were killed in an encounter at Moga where a UT police crime branch team had gone to arrest the accused in the case. Two policemen, Sub-Inspector Rajdeep Singh and Head Constable Surinder Kumar, were injured in the encounter.

A team of crime branch had gone to arrest Rinku and Gosha when the shootout took place between cops and Sukhdev and his gunman Inderjeet Singh in Moga on June 25.

Interestingly, the claim of the Chandigarh Police that accused Rinku and Gosha were also involved in the encounter had fallen flat when the duo was discharged and given a clean chit from the case of attempt to murder and the Arms Act by a local court in Moga on July 2.

The case

* On June 22, Jaswinder Singh, who has been arrested, along with Gurcharan Singh, alias Rinku, and Sukhpal Singh Gosha had thrashed Harpinder Singh, who lived as a paying guest in Sector 22, Chandigarh.

* Harpinder had reported that the trio, along with other two, barged into his place, attacked him with a baseball bat and shot an objectionable video.

Two killed as bike, tipper collide head-on

Mohali, July 31
Two motorcyclists were killed in a head-on collision with a tipper on the Kharar-Landran road near Dehri village here today.

The mishap took place at around 9.15 pm. Kashmira Singh and Gurpreet Singh, both in their mid-thirties and residents of Kharar, died on the spot.

Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said Kashmira and Gurpreet were heading towards Kharar from Banur when their bike collided with the tipper. He added, “Both of them were declared brought dead at the Civil Hospital.”

The driver of the tipper fled from the spot leaving the vehicle behind.

The police have seized the tipper and registered a case at the Sohana police station.

Auto driver dies in road mishap

Chandigarh, July 31
An auto-rickshaw driver was killed in an accident near Aryan Enclave Society at Sector 51 here last night. The deceased has been identified as Arun Kumar (42), a resident of Sector 49.

The police said Arun was on his way back home in his three-wheeler (CH-01-TA-1863) when a rashly-driven car hit the vehicle. The victim was alone in the auto when the mishap took place.

The car driver, Jatinder Singh (24) of Mohali, was arrested and released on bail.

In another match, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, defeated Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-16. Further, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, defeated Government High School, Sector 32, 25-22 and 25-15, while Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, defeated Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 29, 25-07 and 25-12.

In the girls’ (U-14) category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 43, 25-11,25-11. Swimming championship begins tomorrow

Chandigarh, July 31
Tricity Swimmers Welfare Society (TSWS), Mohali, will host the Chandigarh State-Level Swimming Championship for boys and girls (under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 17) and seniors on August 2 and 3 at the Swimming Pool of Panjab University, here.

Students of university/colleges/ schools of Chandigarh are eligible to participate in the tournament. The competition will be organised under the FINA Rules.

A competitor can participate in maximum five events.

During the championship, the society will also select Chandigarh team to participate in the 68th Senior National Swimming Championship to be held in Kolkata from November 5 to 9.

Swimmers who have represented other state than Chandigarh in nationals or have participated in state championships organised by other state swimming associations are advised to produce NOC from the respective state swimming association in order to participate.

Football cup: Strawberry Fields School outplay GMHS-26

Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, defeated Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 26, 2-0, in a match of the ongoing Pre-Subroto Football Cup for boys (U-17) at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here today.

Rithwivik pumped in both the goals, one each in the 16th minute and 22nd minute. In the second match, Delhi Public School, Sector 40, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, 4-2, in tie-breaker.

For the winning side, Chetanya, Gurkaran, Manik and Dhruv scored a goal each while, Anoop and Sarabhjeet scored for the losing side.

In the last match, St Joseph School, Sector 44, defeated St Marry School, Sector 46, 3-0. Ankit scored all the three goals in the 12th minute, 22nd minute and 28th minute, respectively.

Table tennis: DAV-8 win gold

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, won gold medal in the Inter-School Table Tennis Tournament for Girls (U-17) held at Sector 23, here today. In the final, DAV school defeated Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, 3-0. In the first match, Pareen defeated Seerat 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7) while, Paavan beat Ayushi Bagga 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-8). In the last match, Anshuki overpowered Ayushi Joel 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6).

Gurukul Global eves win title

Gurukul Global School won the sub-junior (girls’under-14 category) after defeating St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, 3-1. Gurukul team comprising Vibhuti, Vasundhra Singh Hooda, Tanvi, Tanisha and Ananya Goyal lifted gold medal. AITA Super Series Tennis tournament
City lads to clash for title today

City lads will clash for the final of boys’ (u-16) category in the ongoing HTA–AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament at Harvest Tennis Academy, Jassowal, on Friday.

In the semifinals of boys’ (U-16) category played today, Chandigarh’s Param Pun booked his berth to clash with another lad from Chandigarh, Digvijay Pratap Singh.

In the first semifinal of boys (U-16 years), Param Pun overpowered his rival Paras Dhaiya from Haryana. Param won the match 6-1 and 6-1. In the second semifinal, Digvijay Pratap Singh beat his rival Mritunjay Badola from Uttarakhand 6-2 and 6-3.

In the semifinals of boys (U-14 years), Chandigarh’s Kabir Manrai moved ahead in the final after defeating Haryana’s opponent Himanhu Mor in a well-settled match. Kabir won the first game 6-3. He, however, struggled in the next and lost the game 3-6. In the final set, Kabir maintained his performance and posted relief with winning the set 6-3.

In the girls (U-16) category, Sarah Dev of Punjab, trainee of Harvest Tennis Academy, stormed into the final after overpowering top seed, Chandigarh’s Aarushi Kakkar 6-4 and 6-3 to enter the final.

Athletics assn to conduct trials on August 4

The Chandigarh Athletics Association will conduct selection trials on August 4 (10 am) at the Sector 7 Sports Complex to shortlist Chandigarh’s senior athletics team.

The selected team will participate in the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships in Patiala from August 16 to 19. Only bonafide residents of Chandigarh can appear for the trials. The athletes are advised to contact SK Joshi, athletics coach, at the venue.
