Day 2: City roads still waterlogged

It has been more than 24 hours since the rain stopped but many areas of city are still waterlogged. Low-lying areas in Industrial Area and Focal Point are still waterlogged, posing inconvenience to workers and industrialists.

Employees at Mini-Secretariat basement dread rain

Each time it rains heavily, there is chaos in the basement of the Mini-Secretariat here. As soon as rain stops, employees of different government departments get busy draining the rainwater from their respective offices.

Two lives snuffed out in accident
Ludhiana, July 29
Two bikers were killed in an accident on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway early this morning. An unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle near Rampur village at around 4:30 am.

2 hurt in group clash at Joshi Nagar
Ludhiana, July 29
Two persons were injured in a clash between two groups in the Joshi Nagar area of Haibowal late last evening. One of the groups fired shots into the air. The injured have been identified as Pawan and Gurpreet, who work with a liquor contractor.

Civic body keeps Rs 5 crore underpasses locked

The underpass near the Mini-Secretariat, which has been constructed at a huge cost, seems to be a waste of money as it has been “locked” for the past more than a month. Interestingly, nobody in the Municipal Corporation knows who ordered the closure of the underpass.

Community centre: Warrants against welfare society chief
Ludhiana, July 29
The State Information Commission has issued bailable warrants against Vinod Sharda, president of the Welfare Society of Block H and I, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, for his failure to comply with the provisions of the Right to Information Act and non-appearance before the Commission at the hearing of an appeal filed by a local resident.

Mall authorities defy orders
Ludhiana, July 29
Three days’ time was given by the Assistant Town Planner, Zone D, to the authorities of a mall on Ferozepur Road to remove plastic barricade in the parking area. The letter was issued on July 12, 2012, (letter number 2870/ATP-D) to MBD Neopolis, but even after two years, the barricades have not been removed.

Four new jails to come up in state: Cabinet minister
Ludhiana, July 29
Sohan Singh Thandal, Cabinet Minister, Jail, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, Printing and Stationary, said new jails would soon come up in the state. He said inmates would be shifted to those jails.

Eid: After fasting, feasting begins

It was feasting time for the Muslim community today. People flocked to markets to buy vermicelli. The day started with prayers and then the preparation of sheer korma and badam phirni followed. The traditional vermicelli pudding was also on the platter.

Eid transcends barriers
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 29
Devotees of the region celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr after observing 30 days of rozas (fasting) today. People clad in colourful garments gathered at mosques in the town and surrounding villages of Malerkotla, Dehliz Kalan, Rohira, Kanganwal and Rasoolpur.

Traders relieved as amendment to VAT Act withdrawn

Traders and Industry today finally heaved a sigh of relief after the government decided to withdraw the amendment to Section 13 (1) of VAT Act. According to the amendment, traders were to get Input Tax Credit (ITC) only after their commodity was sold.

Employees to get universal PF account numbers soon
Ludhiana, July 29
People will soon receive universal Provident Fund (PF) account numbers. After that, they will not be required to apply for the transfer of their provident fund (PF) accounts while switching jobs anywhere in the country. This service is likely to be started around October 15 and by March 2015, it is expected to cover all employees.

A musical show, “Sarb Dharam Shardhanjli”, was organised to pay tributes to singer Ishmeet Singh on his sixth death anniversary at Ishmeet Singh Music Institute. Students, faculty members, city-based singers and members of Ishmeet’s family offered prayers.

Medical camp for diarrhoea patients

A round the clock medical camp is going on at Community Hall, Street no 3, Parkash Nagar, Jawwadi, after diarrhoea outbreak on July 23. Today 21 patients were examined and no new case of diarrhoea was reported from Parkash Nagar.

Protest held
Residents of the Field Ganj area which was flooded with rainwater hold a protest against the authorities for not coming to their rescue. The residents held a protest against the Councillor Ward Number 42 Gurdeep Singh Neetu. The residents alleged that because of dilly-dallying tactics of the councillor and MC, they had to bear the brunt and the dirty water entered into their premises.

Contractor accused of harassment
Ludhiana, July 29
The Ludhiana Private Employees Union accused a contractor of harassment. They said the contractor’s workers indulged in violence while collecting money. Those, who objected to the nefarious activities, were assaulted.

Chain snatched
Ludhiana. July 29
Snatchers targeted a woman and snatched a gold chain from her at Pakhowal road here. The victim indentified Gurpreet Kaur was on her way to market to buy vegetables.

HC tells purchasers to hand back possession
Ludhiana, July 29
The High Court today directed purchasers of Ludhiana Mediciti (now Ludhiana Mediways) to hand back possession of the hospital to the bank. The hospital will now be re-auctioned by the bank.

Local weightlifter strikes silver

Vikas Thakur, a trainee of the Ludhiana Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Club, clinched a silver medal in weightlifting during the ongoing 20th Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in Scotland.

Lakshya, Jasmehar script facile victories

Lakshya Sharma, Punjab champion (U-10), and Jasmehar Singh Virdi (U-13) scripted easy victories in their respective categories on the opening day of the Ludhiana District Badminton Tournament that began at Shastri Hall near Guru Nanak Stadium today.
