Major tragedy averted in bank fire
Incident reported at Syndicate Bank in Sec 17 when staff were yet to arrive; records damaged

Chandigarh, July 3
A major tragedy was averted after a fire broke out at the regional office of Syndicate Bank at Bank Square in Sector 17 this morning as bank employees were yet to arrive. The parking in front of the bank was empty, providing a clear passage to fire tenders.

For once, lessons learnt from the past

Firefighters in action at the bank in Sector 17. Learning lessons from the recent fire incident which led to the collapse of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) building in Sector 17, that claimed the lives of two firemen, the Fire Department and the city police today acted swiftly and alerted other fire stations in the city, the Indian Air Force for back-up and even called a Civil Defence team on time.

Building violations come in the way of firefighters

One of the entry points to the regional office of Syndicate Bank that was blocked, hampering the firefighting operations. Firefighters, who had a tough time controlling the recent fire at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) building in Sector 17 after they found entries to the building closed with walls, faced a similar situation today when they had to break the shutter, a door and a board installed at one of the entry points to spill water inside the regional office of Syndicate Bank.

Ajay Sehgal (52), branch manager of the PNB, Sector 20, allegedly committed suicide last evening by jumping in front of the Unchahar Express (14218) on the Chandigarh-Ambala railway line at Daria village, 2 km from the Chandigarh railway station.

Depressed over wife’s death, labourer commits suicide

A 42-year-old labourer, Ashwani, who worked with a Ludhiana hosiery company, committed suicide today by jumping in front of the Lal Kuan Express near Raipur Kalan this morning. He was depressed over his wife’s death.

Due to the sudden death of Brijpal Chaudhary, driver of the Himalayan Queen, which runs between New Delhi and Chandigarh, the train was delayed by two hours today.

Tough competition for students in open category

Chandigarh, July 3
Students queue up to submit admission forms at Panjab University on Thursday. Students seeking admission to BCom-I under the open category faced a tough competition on the first day of the counselling today, as this year the cut-off percentage (rank) was two per cent higher as compared to the last year in all city colleges. Only 28 seats were left under the general quota out of the 243 in two private colleges of the city. As many as 111 students also got admission under the UT pool category.

In the quarterfinals played today, Shamita Yadav defeated Arista Kanav (6-0), while Khushbeen Kaur beat Jyotsna Yadav 6-1. In another quarter-final, Dikshita Rana defeated Adita Vashisht (6-4), whereas Agrima Tewari beat Sakshi Singh (6-2).
