Be bold, be bald
Besides kicking the ball hard, Dutch footballer Robben Arjen might kick-start a trend of bald head also. And there are men who already swear by their shaven heads

Raghu Ram finds confidence sexy
Raghu Ram finds confidence sexy

Sipping cola with her friends, engrossed in showing off her new branded bag, she cannot help her gaze from wandering to the man sitting on the next table. He has an element of sexiness to him that is difficult to ignore. "This was the man I dated for two years and married later.

And you know why I couldn't stop looking at him that day at the club, because there was something intimidating and confident about him, something really attractive about that bald look that he carried. This is precisely why I married him," Meera Sharma recounts her first meeting with her husband Abhinav Sharma, a businessman dealing in the production of parts for gensets.

And here they are, attracting women, setting a trend; oozing confidence… the bald look is the new hot statement. In fact according to a study, society perceives men with shaved heads more 'manly.' Alfred Mannes, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, published in his paper that men who shave off their heads has a higher degree of masculinity, strength, dominance and leadership qualities.

So, what are you waiting for, if you see that slight hair loss or if you want to know the shape of your skull or just set a new trend, you know what to invest in- a shaving machine, of course you know!

Clear cut style

Some of the Hollywood's hottest men are bald, Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks, Pitbull and how do we not count the fast and furious footballer of Netherlands team in FIFA 2014, Robben Arjen. Men, who deliberately went in for the bald look either had the receding hairline problem, or simply wanted to kick-start a trend.' Take it from the creative guy of Virsa Arts in Punjab Navjit Buttar, who one fine day decided to use the shaving machine around his head. He laughs now, "The bald look somehow looked good, I didn't expect it that way though. Friends and people around gave me mixed reactions, but as long as I was confident and happy about it, it was fine."

As for Bollywood, only villains sport the bald look. (Read Amrish Puri, Sanjay Dutt). This however wasn't a deterrent for Navjit. "I think men who are bald obviously stand out, since most people think that it takes a lot of confidence to shave off the tuft, this is why they get intimidated by bald people."

Hair and there

A bald look establishes dominance, nevertheless there are many theories to it, like what the MTV Roadies man Raghu has to say. "Hair protects the head from heat, and shaving them off requires confidence, it is this confidence that women probably find sexy." Raghu also feels that Bollywood has shown bald men as villains but now things are changing. "Now an articulate, smart bald man is bound to be noticed."Ankush Kumar Sharma, vice-president and regional head, corporate banking IndusInd Bank, Chandigarh seconds Raghu's take. "The bald look is so international, back in my Mumbai office many of my clients have appreciated my look," he says. Neither does Ankush deny that he invites a second look from women. He smiles, "Bald men come across as dominating and confident."

Head straight

That small patch on the head that isn't fertile might give a scare to men, but now they can carry the shaved-off look on their head with confidence. The best part is that a bald man can just roll out of the bed without caring two hoots about the hair styling. Kunal Pandey who works as a senior manager for Being Human, Elante Mall, Chandigarh, can't think of taking to any other style but his bald look. "Last year, I came to Chandigarh from Delhi, so I decided to go in for a new look for the new city. This look has been lucky for me, it has worked well for me, and I wouldn't go back to my 'vanity hair', at least not for now."

Receding hairline is not a matter to fret and fume over, not anymore!

Smells like love
The cast of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania feels at home in Chandigarh. Those fun-filled days of shooting, being themselves in the film. They have quite a lot to share
Manpriya Singh

By now, he has kicked up a ruckus by shedding some tears in the trailor. The one where Varun Dhawan has a tough time handling the high- voltage emotions in the last scene of DDLJ. A film that is not just an inspiration but a preface to yet another love story Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Any similarity in titles is purely accidental, for it is the spirit and the subject that is intended to be carried forward.

Romance remains an eternal subject in Bollywood. So much so that there wasn't even any need for a reference point for the actors. "We've grown up watching romantic films and Bollywood flicks. So there wasn't any need do homework. We were told to play our favourite love story," shares Alia Bhatt, while in Chandigarh, for a promotional tour before the release of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. She plays Kavya Pratap Singh, a Kareena struck bubblehead from Ambala. "She's active and full of energy but she's not irritating." Over enthusiastic Punjabi is in stark contrast to a grounded Tamilian girl she portrayed in the last film 2 States. "In fact, I asked the director if we needed to do diction classes. We didn't go ahead with the idea because that brings along a synthetic touch."

While Varun just gets to be the neighbour, the boy next door kind of guy who's both good and vulnerable. Shares Varun, "Playing a Punjabi came easy to me because for one, I'm a Punjabi myself. The set itself had so many Punjabis, in fact the property where we shot was owned by a Punjabi, Gags Aulakh who gave a lot of cultural insights. Whatever else I had to be filled in on came from my cousin in Delhi whom I would ask to speak the lines for me."

From small to silver screen

A triangle is inevitable in a love story. If it weren't for the third party in the plot, the first two wouldn't stand united. Joining the two of them is television guy Siddharth Shukla, who plays, "An NRI doctor and a hero who becomes a villain." He shares, "Television stars always want to reach out to a larger audience and see themselves of the big screen. This was the best platform to test waters."

The Chandigarh connect

Chandigarh is like a home turf now and the city roads are just some of the familiar routes. "This must be my 6th visit to Elante Mall…The whole unit had absolute fun during our shooting schedule that lasted over a month and a half in Aura Vaseela. We would eat together on the sets and stayed like a family." Chips in Alia, "In fact, I would listen to the song Samjhawaan while traveling to and from the shoot. It's a song that Kavya would be imagining in her head, so it has been used in the film because it takes the story further."

Daddy's darling

Then there are questions that are a staple to most star kids. The reactions from their star fathers. Shares Alia, "He is my best and worst critic. He won't sugar coat things. For example, after watching Student Of The Year, he said that I dance well. Then after watching 2 States, he told me that he loved me but he loved Arjun more." That's just a rip off from the father-daughter banter. As for the upcoming projects, "I'm not authorised to speak."

Laughs off Varun, "She's doing some Hollywood projects, so she's not speaking about them." While he has no qualms announcing, "Shriram Raghavan's next film and ABCD 2."

Paranthe wali gali...
The delicious paranthas have always been everyone's favourite. With a few innovative twists, the taste picks up a notch. Here are a few mouth-watering options that you can choose from in Chandigarh
Amarjot Kaur

If you are wondering what settles the tug-of-war between the appetite of a 'Punjabi' and appetite for 'Punjabi' food, just stack a dozen paranthas on the breakfast table for a family of four and you will get the answer!

Paranthas have for long remained the staple breakfast diet of people in the region, so the reasons why they have caught the attention of food enthusiasts in Chandigarh are quite evident.

As a few more lacchas are added to the existing folds of the good-old parantha, here are some options to savour in the city.

Light delight

Malabari parathas

What do you like your butter chicken with? Naan, tandoori roti or rice? Well, here's another option- Malabari parantha. "This flaky version of a parantha, which compliment the taste of butter chicken, is in fact a delicacy from the South," says Gayatri Sood, daughter of the owner of Monica's Kitchen and Kaffe.

Mix & match: "The dough is made out of maida and wheat, but the main thing is the layering, which is done like a puff pastry, where each layering is done with butter. Though the outer layer of the parantha is crisp, the inner one is soft," she adds.

Sidekicks: This parantha is cut into pizza slices and served with butter, which is then placed on a cake pan.

Available at: Monicas Kitchen and Kaffes, Moti Mahal, Gourmet Nine and Swagath.

Southern flavour

Coconut parantha

If you were of the opinion that coconuts were a favourite with only the South-Indians, well, at Ten Towns, they have a coconut parantha that is is soft, tender and creamy.

Tandoori twist: "Take coconut cream and salt, mix in maida and knead the dough. Let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Roll the dough and keep it in the tandoor," says Sharad Nautiyal, the chef at Ten Towns. "When the roti turns golden brown, take it out and add desiccated coconut powder," he shares.

Sidekicks: The coconut parantha goes best with Mughlai curries, Shahi paneer, Paneer korma, Chicken korma and other cream-based gravies.

Available at: Ten Towns

Colour full

Tiranga paranrtha

This one is for the nationalist in you! Inspired with the colours of the Indian flag, this three-coloured parantha is a real treat.

United colours of dough: "Make three different-coloured doughs; one with spinach pure, one in white maida and the other in makki, to which you can add saffron or haldi. Now whirl the three stripes of dough in a way that it looks like a Swiss roll and ensure that the makki part is kept in the centre," says Chef Pallav. "The parantha is cooked on a pan and the layers will be arranged in a spiral coil; you can pull out three different coils and serve," he adds.

Sidekicks: It is best served with dahi and achaar.

Available at: JW Marriot

Royal touch

Warqi parantha

Warq is the Urdu word for a thin layer of silver. And the Warqi has at least 16 to 17 layers of dough. This one is for those of you who like the bling.

Royal treatment: Says Chef Pallav from JW Marriot, "Take maida and knead it with poppy seeds as well as milk. While frying it in on a pan, we sprinkle some saffron on it and add a thin layer of warq. It is a delicacy from Lucknow."

Sidekicks: It is best served with Galouti kebabs.

Available at: JW Marriot, Hometel and Page 3.

Mediterranean masala

Shawarma roll

This one has a tropical twist, so fondly address it as a Mediterranean parantha, which is cooked in the wood-fire oven and has the smoky flavour of coal as well as wood. So, if you like non-vegetarian, there is no way you can ignore this parantha.

Make & bake: "This parantha is made out of chicken and sorted vegetable stuffing in Mediterranean spices. First, the chicken is cooked in the wood-fire oven so it is more tender and succulent. Then we saute the vegetables," says Gaurav, Owner of Ten Towns. "We then mix the vegetables and chicken in a bowl, add spices and put some hung curd on the half-cooked pita bread on which we later put the mixture of vegetables as well as chicken."

Sidekicks: This non-vegetarian version of parantha is served with French fries and two dips - Humus and Tzatziki.

Available at: Ten Towns

Mixed fare

Nanza

There is a reason why we like remixes - they are fun, spunky and young. The Nanza is a mix of the naan and the pizza. You will like it as a substitute for thin crust pizza, only with a generous topping of chicken tikka chops.

Remix version: "Essentially a fusion food, the crust of Nanza is naan with a radius of five inches. The Nanza is available in three varieties- chicken tikka, chilli chicken and butter chicken," says Ameena, the owner of Rustic Door. "Cross naan and Pizza is different from naans, and tastes more like the pizza. We bake it in a wood-fire oven, which gives it a nice, smoky flavour," she adds.

Sidekicks: It is served just like a pizza and is cut into pieces with chicken tikka, chilli chicken and butter chicken topping on it.

Available at: The Rustic Door.

Doc Talk
Tag it off
Dr Vikas Sharma

Skin tags (medically termed as acrochordons, also called string moles, fibroepithelial polyps, or eyelid papillomas) are fleshy tumour like growths that hang from the surface of the skin on tiny stalks. They are commonly found on the neck and armpits, or in the groin area. Sometimes, they form on the eyelids or other areas of the body as well.

This skin to brown coloured growth may stay relatively tiny, or continue to grow. Although skin tags themselves are rarely malignant, nor do they automatically lead to skin cancer, they are quite odd in appearance, and may become annoying and prone to irritation, particularly if they snag on or rub up against clothes or jewellery. Skin tags are composed of a core of fibres and ducts, nerve cells, fat cells, and a covering of epidermis. Skin tags are usually a few millimetres in size, although can be as big as 8-10cm.

Genetic predispositions influence the development of skin tags; in particular, overweight people and pregnant women often find themselves plagued by the condition. People with close family members who have skin tags are more likely to develop these themselves.

A profusion of skin tags may be connected to Type 2 diabetes, colon polyps, or tumors of the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract; such growths may also be markers for atherosclerosis and other types of cardiovascular disease. Skin Tags might appear innocuous and in many cases they are, but these dermatological anomalies act as an early warning sign for a more serious health issue in some.

Skin tags can be a useful indicator of underlying metabolic issues in patients.

Therefore, even if a person is not distressed by the appearance of skin tags, a thorough medical check-up should be performed to rule out the associated conditions. Skin Biopsy of the growths may be recommended to ensure that no basal or squamous cell carcinoma is present.

Skin tags are more common in

  • People who are overweight and obese, probably because they have more skin folds and creases.
  • Pregnant women are most likely to develop this problem because of the hormones secreted.
  • Individuals with diabetes
  • People with the human papilloma virus
  • Illegal steroid use interferes with the body and muscles, causing the collagen fibres in the skin to bond, allowing skin tags to be formed.

Home Remedies for Skin Tags

The Skin Tags are cosmetically unappealing, and most people prefer to get rid of them. Many over-the-counter skin tag remedies claim to work because they contain plant extracts with anti-viral properties. Unlike warts, skin tags are not caused by viruses, so these treatments are a waste of money. The two home remedies people employ on skin tags are the tying-off-with-a-string method and herbal salves or powders containing bloodroot. Do not cut it yourself, because it can bleed a lot.

Tying a thin string or hair around the base of the stalk cuts off the blood supply to the skin tag; it will shrivel and turn black. The problem with doing this at home is that there are several skin lesions similar to skin tags but the pathology in them is different and such a method used in those can worsen the condition or create a secondary infection so it's better to confirm the diagnosis first by a specialist.

For obvious safety reasons, no one should ever use a home remedy for any growth on or around the eyes, or for particularly large growths. Dermatologists usually use electrodessication or laser to get rid of skin tags. Removal does not cause more of them to grow; it's just that once a patient has a predisposition to form skin tags, they may pop up from time to time.

stress buster
Go easy on yourself
Renee Singh

When we feel overwhelmed by stress, we don't know whether we will ever be able to cope with it. Fortunately, small changes in our lifestyle and focus can make a remarkably difference in how we feel.

Make a clear plan

This helps you to feel empowered and enables you to take effective action. It allows you to shed stress and feel relaxed.

Small changes

You just have to make small changes but they can give you a big stress relief. This may sound overly simplified for the stress you seem to be going through but it is sometimes the simple remedies and solutions that are the most effective.

There are two specific ways to relieve stress

Short term

In this method we need to

  • Reduce the stress response. This calms your physiology and allows you to relax physically.
  • Gain emotional footing.
  • Tackle your stressors with a more level- headed approach.

We just need to change our focus to quickly and effectively restore a sense of calm and to take steps towards managing stress.

Long term stress relief

Certain habits promote resilience to stress as well as increase overall wellness. People who exercise or meditate regularly tend to become less stressed in the face of difficult challenges.

Practice keeping the correct focus so that you can manage your stress response correctly.

Resilience promoting practices help to relieve stress as you engage in them. They also help you to be less reactive to stress.

  • Resilience promoting activities
  • Emotion focused coping
  • Focus on coping techniques that reduce your emotional experience.

Talk to a friend

This is an emotion focused technique. Emotion focused technique works in such a way that it does not allow you to get emotionally overwhelmed by your stressors and it helps you to respond effectively in stressful situations. Remaining calm and level- headed allows you to access more effective solutions than when you are overly reactive.

Solution focused coping

This is all about how to cope with stress by focusing on solutions to the very problems that are creating the stress.

Create boundaries in your life

This helps to diminish your stress directly by attacking on the stressors, which help to indirectly attack stress.

This generally requires more specialised approach than emotion focused coping strategies.

Its Rocking
Let the music flow…

If you were feeling a little deprived of the Bollywood romantic ballads after the release of Aashiqui 2, guess what the good news is! Sung by Ankit Tiwari, who is also the music director of the film, Ek Villan, the song, Galliyan is topping the Radio Mirchi top ten Bollywood songs, by the sheer virtue of its subdued subtle melody that is easy to hum along with and catchy enough to get all the attention.

A fine balance

I really love this song. I think it is a fine mix of melody and harmony and the lyrics are pretty sweet too. I love the lyrics and video of the song too.

Shyna, social worker at NRHM, Chandigarh

Dance along

I like the song because I am a hopeless romantic at heart and this song is all about love, romance and passion. Each time I hear this song, I feel so happy and it makes me want to do waltz with my husband, only that he has two left feet!

Harjeet Kaur, homemaker

Subtle effect

What I really like about this song is its music, which is so soft, subtle and mellow. Also, I love the fact that everyone can relate with this song, no matter what their age is. The universality and tune of the song makes it a big it.

Taranjot Singh, private bank employee

Some brains, some blondes!
We take a look at some of the actresses who made the right move regarding marriage and also those who did not

Cost factor: Preity Zinta

One wrong step
Preity Zinta:
Had Preity married Ness Wadia a few years ago instead of chasing a career that was slowly declining, she would not have faced this ugly abuse battle in court against him today. Apparently, she wanted to continue acting while Ness' family would not allow that and his mother also did not care much for her. She is a strong lady and we hope she finds a wonderful man and starts a family with him soon.

Done well: Vidya Balan

So far, so good
Vidya Balan:
Vidya may get it wrong at times but she has carved a niche for herself and has a steady stream of movies. She married UTV head Siddharth Roy Kapoor more than a year ago and seems to live a balanced and happy life.

Clever woman: Shilpa Shetty

The saving grace
Shilpa Shetty:
She knew her career was not going anywhere after Metro. So she wisely decided to invest in some business ventures like Iosis Spa and an international food range with husband Raj Kundra. They have a son and have ventured into film production.

Downward slope: Ameesha Patel

Not a wise move
Ameesha Patel:
Once upon a time, she had a promising career in Bollywood after the success of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Humraaz and Gadar. Then she dated Vikram Bhatt and her life went downhill for a while. UK-based businessman Kanav Puri was her knight in shining armour and he even helped her reconcile with her parents. They were serious. However, she chose her career over marriage. She has not been able to rekindle the flame of her Bollywood career and is reportedly involved with her producer friend.

Scoring goal: Kareena Kapoor Khan

A mind of her own
Kareena Kapoor Khan:
She made the wise decision of marrying her long-time beau Saif Ali Khan. Her movie choices are unreliable and unpredictable so she did one good thing at least. As of now, she only has Singham 2 on hand and is turning down several movies for reasons best known to her.

The youngest racism victim

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian's 12-month-old daughter North became the target of a racial slur while onboard a plane last month. The 33-year-old star's daughter North, whom she has with husband Kanye West, was allegedly screamed at by a woman while travelling in first class, reported a publication online.

Speaking to her sister Khloe in an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim recalled the horrifying incident, "I fell asleep, I woke up to this woman screaming, 'Kanye West's baby!' The woman is screaming at my child, I jump up." The brunette beauty's mother Kris Jenner then tells Khloe, 30, more details about the verbal attack.

"This lady stood up in the cabin in first class and yelled at the top of her lungs, 'She's with a black guy, and that baby is black! And you need to shut that black baby up," she said. — PTI

200 vintage cars for a film

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has used more than 200 vintage cars for his next film titled Bombay Velvet starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar. This is a record of sorts in Bollywood as no other film has used these many cars for a shoot.

Looks like Anurag has left no stones unturned to recreate the era of Bombay Velvet. Since the movie has been shot in Sri Lanka, it became easier for the director to source cars from there as Sri Lanka probably has the most number of vintage cars that are in great shape. — HRM

Metallica's fan base

Rock legends Metallica, one of the oldest and most popular band, celebrated their controversial debut at Britain's iconic Glastonbury festival by inviting hundreds of fans onstage to watch the performance up close.

More than 200 mud-spattered festival-goers - many of them wearing Metallica T-shirts - lined up at the rear of the enormous platform behind Lars Ulrich's drum kit, cheering and dancing throughout the gig, reported a website. — PTI

Taming the wild

While most fear them, Craig Busch handles the king of the jungle with astounding flair and courage, in Animal Planet's all new series The Lion Man: African Safari. Founder of the Zion Wildlife Gardens, Kiwi farm boy, Craig Busch, is a self-taught wildcat trainer and has dedicated his life to the welfare and breeding of the big cats.

In a unique sanctuary, Zion Wildlife Gardens, in the north island of New Zealand, Craig has has created a haven for rare, endangered cats, including white Bengal Tigers, Barbary Lions, and White Lions. Working for over 30 years with these animals, his 'not-so-easy' job includes supervising their health.

The Lion Man: African Safari follows Busch and the park's employees as they manage the park and its collection of approximately 30 lions and tigers of various species, and other animals like rhinos and elephants. The series sees Craig heading on a new adventure, travelling to the ancestral land of lions - Africa - on a mission to help save these animals.

He travels to Timbavati, home to the world's only white lions in the wild to offer viewers rare glimpses of the cat. Craig visits VulPro, the vulture conservation program in Africa and engages with Kerry Wolter who has been working on the birds' rehabilitation initiative. The episodes trail his journey as he helps relocate Siberian tigers to new enclosures and meets local volunteers who share common passion and care for the young cats.

The series documents Craig's mission and a passionate band of animal-loving supporters who have been searching for missing cheetahs, heal desperately ill tigers, and track down unscrupulous rhino killers. He has also sought out like-minded animal experts and conservationists around the globe (including "Wolf Man" Shaun Ellis) to help with his cause. Along the way, he has adopted and raised many orphaned baby animals like an orphaned White Lion cub named Jabullah and lovingly hand-rears several Barbary Lion cubs.

Craig has been travelling across the world to exchange the cubs, in order to enhance the blood lines of some of the rare cat and has helped to bring them back from the brink of extinction.

Starting July 1st, join Craig on The Lion Man: African Safari, as he tracks down poachers and fight devastating bushfires, every night at 9 pm on Animal Planet.
